frankly I really wouldn't know how to do that. I still live at home and I'd have to ask my father about this and don't know if deleting cookies might have any affect on my other groups but I consider finding out.
|
No, deleting them won't affect your other groups. You should reboot your PC at least once a day. Then connect to the Internet. On the top tool bar, go to Tools and in the drop down box, select Internet Options. In the box that opens up, under Temporary Internet Files, select Delete Cookies. If your PC is set up like mine, your cursor arrow will change to an hour glass while it is busy dumping these cookies. Then select Delete File and wait until the hour glass changes back to an arrow, and then go down one line and select Clear History. If you dump these temp files, cookies and clear the history once a week, your computer will run a lot better.
I'm assuming your running XP. If not, gee... I don't remember how to dump temps and cookies in the older operating system. |
And Char, you should do this, too!

You don't have to connect to the Internet to delete your cookies and temporary files. (which is a go(r)dsend for us dialup sufferers). From your desktop, just right click on the icon for your internet explorer and chose "properties". That will bring up the box with all the buttons you need. Then proceed as Cathy has expertly detailed. However just know that when you do this (and you should) that things will act a little differently on the pages have bookmarked. Personally I have that annoying "hamster dance" bookmarked for my granddaughter and whenever I delete my cookies and files, it takes a little longer to load the first time out again. And you won't get the indicators on this site that will show you if there have been new posts since your last visit. Small inconvenience compared to having my pc run efficiently. This will work for Windows 98, XP and NT in my experience. But yes, Affair, check with dad first if you are using his computer. While it doesn't hurt anything, it might give dad some frustrations if he has pages saved. Nothing worse than having someone else do something to the computer you use without giving you a heads up. lol Char, knowing how much you travel on your system and if you've never done it, don't be worried if it takes forever for the hourglass to change back to the cursor. I suspect you have enough cookies to feed an army in your files. And I don't think I have had a chance to say this yet, Cathy...Welcome Back! Don't scare us like that again! Diane |
Oh, I forgot how to do it on dialup. I have Road Runner, so my Internet is always on.
Yes, all sites take a little longer to load after you delete your cookies and temp Internet folders, but after the first logon to a site, it will again collect all the info that makes it connect more quickly. The problem is, you collect info to all the sites you go to, even the ones you don't return to, so you eventually have to dump your cookies and temp folders. And you don't get the indicators, but only for the first time that you revisit a sight. The next visit, all will be back to normal. Hey Diane. I didn't know you were Sundown17! This is Diane... Jenney's friend, right? Thanks for the welcome back message, although it didn't scare me a bit, because I don't remember anything from August, when I was in critical condition. I slept through all but a few minutes of it! |
That's ok, Cathy - speaking for myself, anyway, I was scared enough for both of us. I imagine your family and the rest of your friends who knew about it were too. Just as well that you slept through it, but hey that's a hell of a way to get a lengthy nap.
As for the cookies and temp files - good advice for anyone who doesn't already do this! |
You gave me those instructions a long time ago Cathy and i printed them out. I do the history and temp.internet files deletion but not cookies. If i delete cookies don't i lose the data required on websites to log on???
i.e. - passwords and preferences, etc. I always follow your computer instructions Cathy! |
No, you don't lose passwords and preferences. On this site, it will delete the option of showing you which messages are new and unread, but only for the first time you log on.
I delete temps and cookies about three times a week. If I forget to do it, Dan does. I trained that boy right, somewhere along the line. |
well I thought I'd mentioned I finally got accepted. Apparently they're just short staffed. I've mentioned this and Wayne's site at the site no maybe we'll get more members.
|
I have XP - I deleted my cookies yesterday and had to re-submit all of my log-in info/passwords etc. to banks/websites etc. What a freakin' pain in the arse!
I even had to do it to post here! sheesh! ;) |
I have AVG installed now and so far, touch wood, all seems ok. I have XP too. If you guys dont have AVG and want to try it, it's a free download from their site.

I run AdAware every day....
I can have anywhere from 50 - 180 objects to remove daily! it's nuts. so annoying.... |
Mike - I have Microsoft AntiSpyware, which is active 24/7 and seems to be doing the job. I also have CC. and a Firewall. What d'ya think. Do I have it all covered?
Bru |
I run Microsoft AntiSpyware, then Spybot Search and Destroy, Sypware Doctor and AdAware SE Personal. It always amazes me how much Microsoft AntiSpyware misses.

<< I never have to resubmit logins or passwords. Maybe it's a Canadian thing.>>
Cathy, this happens to me too, in England. Bru |
Mike,
thanks for all that. I'll check out your suggestions. Much appreciated. Bru |
