The Associated Press is reporting this latest:

St. ANDREWS, Scotland — That'll be Doctor Tambourine Man.

Scotland's oldest university announced today that it was awarding an honorary doctorate to the laureate of folk-rock, Bob Dylan.

The University of St. Andrews said Dylan would be made an honorary doctor of music at its summer graduation ceremony on June 23.

"Bob Dylan is an iconic figure for the 20th century, particularly for those of us whose formative years were in the 1960s and '70s," said the university's vice chancellor, Brian Lang. "His songs, and in particular his lyrics, are still part of our consciousness."

St. Andrews, northeast of Edinburgh, was founded in 1413 and is Britain's third-oldest university. Its current students include Prince William, second in line to the throne.

The university said Dylan, 60, had accepted only one previous honorary degree, from Princeton University in 1970.

The honour is the latest academic plaudit for Dylan's song-writing oeuvre. Last month Christopher Ricks, a Dylan fan and author of the critical analysis Dylan's Visions of Sin, was elected Oxford University's Professor of Poetry.

It's a nice thought but I'll just bet you that Gord has had all the "Docs" in his life over the past couple of years that he cares to hear about!

Excellent point! It just needs to be fair, that when you read lyrics from BOTH writers, Gord's stands out in the context that the poetry is clear, concise and reads like one of the great "classic" poems we all know. Call me a "Lighthead", call me prejudice, but I vote on this material in the Grammy's and I, personally, am sick and tired of someone who has been around for a specified number of years, getting a symbolic, upper degree, just because some "CRITICS" say he is a genius! I will stick by Gord ANY day, ANY song and I swear it will overshadow any Dylan song!!!

Would you want Dr. Dylan operating on you?

LMAO . . . I swear, Dylan could not look dignified if his life depending on it! That is a classic picture!

I'm not surprised he left with the cloak he wore. It's just his style.

This is said with affection of course, LOL. I cannot imagine a world without Bob Dylan in it.

Okay, I will probably get "slammed" for this comment, but keep in mind, I love Dylan. He looks like he had one too many enchiladas at Taco Bell and needed relief, REALLY badly! You have to admit, it is a funny pose!!!

Hmm,how do I get outta here!

violet Blue Horse 06-26-2004 01:50 PM

Actually, I think it's the hair do that really puts the finishing touch on the whole experience.

Truly classic pics. Not sure which is funnier, seeing him in that cloak or the expressions on his face. Combine the two and they are hilarious.

stationmaster 06-26-2004 11:29 PM

Yes, the hair as well as the expressions and cloak! It's a combination of all three. Not to mention the lack of interest on his part. One website shows him actually yawning and sleeping through the ceremony. Come on Bob! I know you are busy and bigger than life, but you could at least show a little interest here!

searam 06-27-2004 03:54 AM

Yeah, I agree. He definitely looks dis-interested! Too bad - great honour!!!
