Dear all, What is your favourite quote, one liner,or cliche? Frank. |
Frank, This one's easy; but most people misread it.
"Time wounds all heels" Here's another one I like and use often. "Take my advice, I'm not using it" Janice |
Two all-purpose, any occasion remarks:
"Remember, no matter where you go....there you are." (from "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai") "Oh, you're a HEDGE!" (from "Arthur". See it again or for the first time, it'll make more sense.) Judy ------------------ "the mornin' after blues, from my head down to my shoes..." ------------------------- "Laughing eyes and smiling face..." |
"Tis better to have loved and lost than not to loved at all."
|
I agree. (despite the pain)! |
"Better you than me" and "it's all for the best".

I've always thought that "I can resist anything except temptation" was pretty funny.
I also love "God Save The Queen". midnightmisty [This message has been edited by midnightmisty (edited October 15, 2000).] |
Right now its either "Never ruin an apology with an excuse" or "Showing up is 80% of life"(Woody Allen) http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif

I like the Woody Allen line! Charles Manson is credited with originally saying, "No matter where you go, there you are". One of my favorite lines is one I absent mindedly said to my dog one day on a walk: "Don't just stand there analyzing -- pi** on it and move along!"

On October 29, 1941, U.K. Prime Minister Winston Churchill visited Harrow School to to hear the traditional songs he had sung there as a youth, as well as to speak to the students. This became one of his most quoted speeches, due to distortions that evolved about what he said.
The myth is that Churchill stood before the students and said, "Never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, give up. Never give up. Never give up. Never give up." Then he sat down. In reality, he made a complete speech that included words similar to what are often quoted. Here is what he said close to the end of his speech. These are words to live by. "Never give in. Never give in. Never, never, never, never--in nothing, great or small, large or petty--never give in, except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force. Never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy." |
"He who hesitates is lost."
It was one of my father's favorite phrases. The older I get, the more I take it to heart. |
I figure the latest two favorites are those ones from Itzack Pearlman (sp) right after he broke the fiddle's high string broke. He looked at the conductor and said, "Resume."
And, quieting the audience, after the thrilling 3 string performance he said, "Sometimes it is the role of the artist to make the most music you can with what you have left." "Resume . . . Nice to see Winstone quoted here. One of my favourite Churchill quotes involves his old parliamentary sparring partner Lady Astor Whilst at a social gathering, Lady L said to Churchill "Winston, you are drunk." Churchill's response was, "Madam, you are ugly, but in the the morning will shall be sober."
A classic. My favourite Oscar Wilde quote, "There is only one thing worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." To follow the Lady Astor link above. During the 2nd WW soon after D Day, she stood up in the British parliament made a speech during which she made an ill considered remark, referring to the troops fighting in Italy as D-Day dodgers. Needless to say this did not go down too well with said troops. To the degree that they wrote some words that they sang to the tune of Lili Marlene. The D-Day Dodgers, We are the D-Day Dodgers way out in Italy Always on the vino, always on the spree Eighth Army scroungers and their tanks We live in Rome among the Yanks We are the D-Day Dodgers in sunny Italy We landed at Salerno, a holiday with pay The Jerries brought the bands out to greet us on the way Showed us the sights and gave us tea We all had girls and the beer was free We are the D-Day Dodgers in sunny Italy Naples and Cassino were taken in our stride We didn't go to fight there, we just went for the ride Anzio and Sangros they're just names We only went to look for dames We are the D-Day Dodgers in sunny Italy Dear Lady Astor, you think you know a lot Standing on a platform and talking tommyrot You're England's sweetheart and her pride We think your mouth's too bloody wide That's from your D-Day Dodgers in sunny Italy Look around the mountains in the mud and rain You'll see the scattered crosses, there's some that have no name Heartbreak and toil and suffering gone The boys beneath them slumber on They are the D-Day Dodgers who'll stay in Italy They are the D-Day Dodgers who'll stay in Italy. Foolish woman. |
