I am trying to find out who sang a song had the following in the lyrics.
"When the lights go down in a California town, people are in for the evening" It also mentions something to the effect of "people turning music into gold" and "hopping into a car and grabbing a guitar". I thought it was Gordon, I don't see any close facsimile in the song list. Anybody got the answer? |
I think the song your looking for is called "Gold" by John Stewart with Stevie Nicks singing backup.. This song came out in 1979

Chuck, you've got a memory. That guys question was driving me nuts. I had the tune in my head the last couple of days and I just couldn't get it. Thank you for saving me some sleepless nights.

Hey, I'm late into this, but an added comment - check out almost any of John Stewart's work and you won't be disappointed. Like GL, he's been at it since the early 60's and still has it!

I haven't heard any of John Stewart's material (as far as I know). Can anyone suggest a good CD or two as a starting point. For example, when I try to turn someone onto Lightfoot, I always suggest Sundown or Don Quixote.
------------------ "some people join the party, and others say goodnight" |
Hmmm... that's a tough call for someone with as many records as John, but my personal favorites would be "Phoenix Concerts," "Cannons in the Rain" an d"California Bloodlines" - excellent choices all. "Sundown" and "Don Quixote?" Very, very good. I'd then go to "Summer Sied of Life" myself......

Thanks fezo,
I'll go looking for at least one of your suggested albums tomorrow. Strange, but Sundown, Don Quixote and Summer Side Of Life were the first three I bought - and in that order. ------------------ "some people join the party, and others say goodnight" |
Painter - no wonder you're such a Lightfoot freak (Lightfooter?) - those three albums in that order would hook anyone! The first time I saw him live he was promoting the release of "Don Quixote" (Red Shea actually played guitar that night - the only time I saw him) - Carnegie Hall in NYC.
Good luck on the John Stewar hunt. An American Lightfoot that never got the notice. |
I think it was the Lovin Spoonful. They sang Summer in the CIty as well.
