Mine was Early Morning Rain (1984 Liberty Records) which I got on cassette.

GORD's GOLD. I was a late bloomer when it came to really hearing his music. I was even at the Fillmore West when he appeared with Canned Heat in 1968 and remained clueless as to who he was - I am now ashamed to say. We were there for Canned Heat and I was 17, and probably just wandering around. But GORD'S GOLD truly changed my life in many ways!


(In slight defense, I always loved IYCRMM, from day one in 1970, and always turned it up on the radio).

My first LP was "Did She Mention My Name," for the only Gordon song I knew from hearing it on the radio, 'Black Day In July.'

After listening the the entire LP, I was hooked on this Poet Genius. The rest is history. :)

Mine was 'Complete Greatest Hits', I must admit -only a few years back. I just got started on the guitar and scanned the rows for some new CD's. The Name 'Gordon Lightfoot' caught my attention and it rang a distant bell. I believed my Dad had the IYCRMM Album and I liked. So at the spur of moment I bought the CD, popped in the player on my way back home and as EMR filled the car I grew excited, even more so with every new song. The rest is history... :)

Lightfoot! (1966). I'd heard two versions of Early Mornin' Rain (PPM and Judy Collins) and wanted to hear the original. The rest, as they say, is history.

Probably The Way I Feel... Tough on my old head. By Summer Side of Life he was officially in te buy it the moment you see it category.

My first GL album was 'The Way I Feel'. I was searching through the LPs in the Albrook AF Commissary in the Panama for a Peter, Paul and Mary LP when I came across 'TWIF' and I recognized the name from PPM and Ian and Sylvia albums and 'the rest is history!' :cool:

I have two of these on vinyl, but am thinking that there where 45's before that, that I have lost track of. Oh, and have "Summer Side of Life" - vinyl.

In 1988,a very used,garage sale :rolleyes: copy of "Gord's Gold",that I really didn't play much then.

I replaced it in Aug. of 2001 with a "like new" copy that was remarkably,just $1 and change! I have also since bought the CD to keep the double LP good.

Followed in 1993 by "Sundown","Cold On The Shoulder","Summertime Dream" and "Endless Wire". Again,didn't play them much..I was too into popular music then.

In 2000 I got "If You Could Read My Mind" then 2001 "Songbook" and before that year was over,I got every other available GL album on vinyl and/or casette. (Including one German import).

I received "Early Lightfoot" as a gift. ;)

"Summertime Dream" on lp of course. I didn't really appreciate Gord's music until about 1980. (late bloomer also.)

I've made up for it though. Have met him, I think, 7 times. "Summertime Dream" is one that Gord personally autographed for me a few years ago.

Though I recall very distinctly being blown away by The Wreck when it hit the airwaves in '75, the first album I actually owned myself I guess was Sit Down Young Stranger (before they retitled it).. it was 1978 and I was on the U.S.S. White Plains in the middle of the Indian Ocean in the middle of the night. Somehow I had gotten hold of a cassette tape and I listened to If You Could Read My Mind (the song).. and it struck me like a thunderbolt. I was laying in my rack in the dark and all my mates were fast asleep. The ship quietly rocked along with the waves at sea. I rewound the tape and listened to IYCRMM again, and again, and again, and again.. for about an hour I think.. Eventually (I'm 18 years old) I became absolutely stunned that someone could write something with such a depth of feeling and meaning about something.. I remember thinking, "this is completely perfect!"..

That is such a powerful story, RJ. I agree, the songs have such depth and beauty. It's almost like they touch a part of your soul like nothing else can. IYCRMM is one of my favourites as well. It must have been a comfort in such an isolated place.

I just discovered Gord last fall...I fell in love with The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald.

Gord's Gold 2 was my first disc. I still have many many more to go to complete my collection too. I love them all though.

Endless Wire. I was 17. I didn't have a clue how that album would affect my life. I have not been able to hear enough of him in the last 30 years. My time flies by. Did I mention I am seeing him for the first time in Sept.?
