Sorry folks, I just found this website today, so I felt compelled to put in my 2 cents in regards to my favorite song of GL. Without question my long standing favorite is 'Trilogy,' but most of GL's songs have been my favorite-for-a-day, if you will. Recently I have been enjoying the 'Salute' album. I especially like the song 'Knotty Pine.' Who else has the ability to write a song whose romantic figure is a pine tree. Its silly but beautiful all at the same time. There might be a deeper meaning to the song that I am missing, just as apparently exists in Ringneck Loon, but I have yet to decipher it.

Mr. Potter brings up a great point!!! Lightfoot has such a breadth of work, that any song can be someone's favorite at any given time in their life!!! For example, during reflective phases, I may listen to songs like, "Wherefor and Why", while in a more jubilant mood may may prefer, "Richman's Spiritual". The man is a master, beyond any shadow of a doubt. I'd have to say, my most beloved song at the moment would be "The Watchman's Out". No one tells a story like Gord!!!

Knotty Pine is one of my favourites too! I don't worry about the deeper significance, I just enjoy it for what it is. I've always pictured it as something that came to him while he was on one of his famous wilderness canoe trips.

Knotty Pine was the first song GL sang at Massey Hall with an electric guitar.

I agree with you re gord in concert.If you like his music, may I suggest Canada's most popular folk musician of the day.His name is Garnet Rogers, yes, brther of Stan.No one tells a story like Garnet.He tours in Ohio a couple of times a year.Go see him and be prepared to be amazed.He , like Gord, is one of the worlds greatest storytellers.
