How about 'Song for a Winter's Night'.
We all know that it was written during a summer storm but to me it will always conjure up a vision of a log cabin in the snow, fire crackling in the hearth, flames dancing up the chimney, while he sits at the table, bottle of wine close by, guitar across his lap, staring out the window. Perfect for December. |
and he's thinking of me!
LOL Char |
I just heard/saw him perform this song on my local PBS station. Yes, they decided to show Gord Live In Reno. It's a great song for December!

Char, now who is 'delusional'? You KNOW it's me he's thinking of ... lol

Sorry SilverHeels, all the evidence points to Char on this one. She did mention in the snow small talk that she shares the same snowstorm with Gord. And logically she lives close enough that he could hear her voice softly calling. Also, something about reading between the lines of a letter she sent long ago. When the song of the month is Let It Ride, then we'll discuss the "girls in London."
As for Song For A Winter's Night, it really captures the warmth of winter. The guitar intro describes falling snow. The snow is really coming down now as I write this and it's a perfect winter's night. Not a snowstorm goes by without that song being played. |
What I want to know is how much did Char pay
you? lol. Enjoy the snow and the song, Supaiblue! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif |

This morning I had one of those odd moments when GL pops into your world at a time which seems more than coincidental.
Hopped into the car, turned on the radio, and heard a rendition of Song For A Winter's Night by Sarah McLachlan. Fortunately they followed it by Gord singing the real thing (which I have never ever heard played on the radio before). Absolutely no comparison between the two. Of course I'm critical of anyone else doing a Gord song yet I like every song he's done by other songwriters. Anyway, it made my drive to work a joy. |
Supaiblue, that's a nice story.
For a completely different rendition of 'Song for a Winter's Night' you should give a listen to Nana Mousakouri's version! May I make a confession: many years and years ago I heard the Nana M. version and so loved the song I searched everywhere for it.I didnt care who sang it. I just wanted that song. I went everywhere looking for 'If I could be with you again'. Yeh I know - DUH! Anyhow I gave up all hope of ever finding this song, and turned my attention to this new magical singer/songwriter from Canada. One day while I was playing my new Gord LP suddenly there it was- my song. Only Gord called it 'Song for a Winter's Night'. I loved it then, I love it now. I always will. |
On the PBS special, Gord talked about how "Song for a Winter's Night" was written during a thunderstorm in Cleveland, OH! The whole place was laughing, and so was he. He got a GREAT reception from the crowd--I think that it is a favorite of a LOT of people.

Supaiblue,
I love your description of the guitar intro as evocative of the snowfall. Add the sleigh bells, add the ticking of a clock on the mantle. Add the element of being parted from a loved one, with the snow as metaphor for a barrier between them, reflected in the slight sense of doubt and insecurity about whether the lover feels the same way. If its easier to picture Char in that winter setting it's only because SilverHeels is more in her element out on Georgian Bay, dipping and reeling. So I agree that Char has the geographic edge. But if SH had a cottage on the bay, logs on the fire, glasses of wine for two, she'd come in from the cold. She shouldn't have to remain on the streets of London. ------------------ "And the laughter came too easy for life to pass me by." - SDYS |
2M2L, that is my fantasy. Log cabin on the shores of Georgian Bay, blazing logs on the
fire, wine and Gord singing to me ... excuse me I think I've died and gone to heaven! lol |
