you cann make your own best hit CD
all the songs are good. He's not liek so,e bands that have a few good songs that you can sing or dance to then the rest you skip over. You can pick any song from him and it's going to be a good one.

Condensing down to 20 songs? Impossible! CDs will hold far more than 20 songs, though, so you should be able to get upwards of 30 of Gord's best onto one cd. All the above suggestions are good ones. I own the complete G.L. library of commercially released CDs and most of the library on vinyl, as well as several "bootleg" CDs and I, honestly, couldn't pick out just 20 songs. For complete albums, I have always rather favored The Summer Side of Life, though it is Gord's least favorite of his albums and he rarely does any songs from it, other than Cotton Jenny, any more. Anything from that period (early to mid 70s) would probably appeal to your mother-in-law. How old is she? What is her favorite style of music? (Country, folk, pop, rock?) Is she more fond of acoustic or electric music? Provide answers to these questions and I might be able to steer you toward some more appropriate songs to include. You wouldn't lose with the Greatest Hits cd released this past spring, but you also won't get some of Gord's very best music, either. In other words, his very best were not necessarily his greatest hits.

One more thing...I couldn't tell from your intial posting but I rather guess, since you are asking us for his best 20, that you are likely not a G.L. fan yourself. So........ you probably don't own much, if any, of Gord's CDs now. Therefore, if you were planning on just burning them from an on-line source, like KaZaa...I have to tell you that you will not find much of a selection of Gord's best work off the internet. You might better invest in the Greatest Hits CD, if this is your situation.

I agree with the suggestions to buy the new greatest hits CD. But be a great guy and buy her two: the aforementioned and DON QUIXOTE. Both are available at CDUniverse.com . She'll think you're wonderful.

You will find plenty on WinMx if yer looking for any of Gord's stuff, it's where I got the rare unreleased stuff from.

I have heard Summer Side of Life, and I have to admit it's not exactly my favourite Lightfoot recording either. I listened to it a few times and just couldn't get into it. It's totally possible over a span of 40 years or so to have a dud and that is probably it.

But then there may be other CD's that people don't personally like beside's that one.

The title track is good, I was referring to the rest of the tracks on the LP http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif

I strongly disagree with the thought that Summer Side of Life is a dog.
It was released circa 1970 (thirty years ago) and yet the music is still fresh
today. Ditties like Love and Maple Syrup and I heard you talking in Your
Sleep speak across the years. And the musicianship on that LP is just out-
standing.

You could always buy GORD'S GOLD,volume 1 and volume 2,These include lots of his popular songs. Then there is also the UNITED ARTIST COLLECTION, a two cd. set with great songs from Gord's early career. Randy

For me anything prior to aboout 1973 is foreign to me, the stuff Gord did prior to this I must admit I cannot get into, I suppose if I was alive in 1960 I'd have a different spin, but 1973 and up is what I am familiar with.

I am aware that there are those who like SSOL, I was just saying I personally didn't like it. http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif

endlessswire78 12-06-2002 10:44 PM

Hey SSOL is a good album of Gord's. I mean I am only 24 and had the CD when I was like 19 and must have played it over and over. Something about the backing voices in "Talking In Your Sleep" is phenominal. Also "Go My Way". Another terrific song. I think you need to play the album some more. Even play it in your flying machine if you like http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif

joveski 12-07-2002 12:27 AM

in plain, simple terms, it's his best album!

notsocooldude 12-07-2002 09:39 AM

SSOL is surely a very good album. The highlights for me are Miguel, Cabaret, Talking in your sleep, and as for Gordon,s french in Nous Vivons Ensemble, it says it all. In fact I am going to put that CD on now http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif

Why not go out and buy Songbook, the boxed set that covers Gord's career up to 1998? It even has some previously unreleased tracks, and if you buy it, vs. burning it from an online source, he'll actually get paid some $$ for it. Believe me, if your mom is a Gord fan, she'd really love Songbook, and you might even find it on sale if you look online.

Did you ever notice how someone will stop by and ask for advice or make a statement and then never respond to our answers? Not all of them but it seems to happen a lot, I for one would love to know what they think of our extremely thoughtful comments....

Ohhh, Talking in Your Sleep. I love that song. That is one of my favorite songs. And Miguel; I've always loved that song.

You did check her profile didn't you? It said she's from Phoenix.

(She spells worse than I do. Of course, she probably meant to do it just for the heck of it)
