Thought I'd give a listen to some old Jimmy Buffett stuff tonight. I bought
his new CD "License to Cill" and really enjoy it. No one has a better time than Jimmy Buffett. In the book that comes with his 4 CD compilation "Boats, Beaches, Bars and Ballads" released in 1992 and going back to "Come Monday" from 1973, Jimmy says about the song "The Wino and I Know" - "This was a song I wrote after listening to Gordon Lightfoot, who has been a great influence on my style. Gordon takes uncommon subject matter and turns it into lyrics that make you listen to what the singer is saying. With all the passing trends of the last two decades, I still haven't changed my style of writing. A good story is never out of fashion. Thanks, Gord." THE WINO AND I KNOW Jimmy Buffett The ice cream man he's a hillbilly fan, He's got seventy-eights by Hank Snow; Walks down the street, shufflin' his feet, To the rhythm that only he knows. And I've seen him in so many places, I saw him the night I was born; In a Bourbon Street bar I received my first scar From an old man so tattered and torn. And the Wino and I know the pains of street singin' Like the door-to-door salesman knows the pains of bell ringin' It's a strange situation, a wild occupation, Living my life like a song. Well the coffee is strong at the Cafe Du Monde, And the donuts are too hot to touch; But just like a fool, when those sweet goodies cool, I ate 'til I ate way too much. Cause I'm livin' on things that excite me, Be they pastries or lobsters or love; I'm just tryin' to get by being quiet and shy, In a world full of pushin' and shove. And the Wino and I know the pains of backbustin', Like the farmer knows the pain of his pick-up truck rustin'. It's a strange situation, a wild occupation, Living my life like a song. Sweet Senorita, Won't you please come with me? Back to the island, honey, back to the sea; Back to the only place that I want to be. And the Wino and I know the joys of the ocean, Like a boy knows the joys of his milkshake in motion. It's a strange situation, a wild occupation, Living my life like a song. |

I went to a Jimmy concert recently and I loved. He really is a kick and has a fantastic time so did everybody there. He just reminds me of a beach vacation.

Yeah, I like how fun loving he is and yet still has his serious side...
Island, I see you in the distance I feel that your existence is not unlike my own... JB |
I didn't reallise just how much fun Buffet has/is when performing until I saw him 'live' on tv. whilst in the US recently. He was promoting the new cd and he was

I have seen Jimmy Buffett in concert over 100 times. Obviously, I am a big fan. I always knew that he was a big fan of Mr. Lightfoots. If you watch the video, "Tales from Margaritavision", Buffett talks about Gordon being a guy he wanted to emulate as a songwriter.

If I still had the album I'd give you all the full lyrics to that song...perhaps Char has them.. well, I tried to build bridges but they all fell down and I've taken to the air on wings of silver but I always hit the ground.. jb |
Island I see you in the distance I feel that your existence Is not unlike my own Island they say no man is like you They say you stand alone Sometimes I feel that way too Is it the need for love? Heart and soul accompaniment That seems to make me different from you I've tried to build bridges But they all fell down I've taken to the air on wings of silver But always hit the ground Island I see you in all of my dreams But I'm a man with no means to reach your distant shore Island I see you in the moonlight Silhouettes of ships in the night Just make me long that much more To be like you Heart and soul accompaniment That seems to make me different from you I've tried to build bridges But they all fell down I've taken to the air on wings of silver But always hit the ground |
