The Way We Feel - 2005-Night TWO-Trip Report

The Way We Feel - Gordon Lightfoot Tribute Shows-Toronto-Jan.14-15-16, 2005 - Hugh's Room.

Saturday January 15, 2005.

Well it was a bitterly cold day in Toronto, too cold to even snow! Jenney and I were looking forward to meeting up with Dan and Nanci from Hamburg, N.Y., Kenyon, and Patti who is the lovely love of Mike Heffernan. Ron Jones would be there again as well.

Jenney and I busied ourselves driving around Toronto, getting last night’s pictures developed, hunting down antique shops and shopping. Then it was time to head off to Hugh’s Room with Dan and Nanci. Shortly after our arrival Patti arrived and then our world travellin’ boy Kenyon. He was full of big hugs and smiles a mile wide. It was so great to see him again – he’s all growed up! LOL

We enjoyed another great meal, catching up on Kenyon’s adventures and travel stories. He was very excited about seeing the show and could hardly wait for it to start. He’s so damn adorable!

We spoke with Jory and Aengus who must have been feeling great after their accomplishment the previous night – the show was fabulous and The Man himself had stayed for the whole thing!

David Newland took the stage and asked the audience who was here for the first time, who was here last year, who was here the first year? Of course I had my hand up the whole time! He spotted me and Jenney and then mentioned our coming to all the shows, that Jenney had driven up last year and this from Connecticut and that there was a great Lightfoot website with a message board that folks could go to for info and post messages! That big hug I gave him a few minutes earlier must have paid off! LOL!

The evening started with:

Jason Fowler singing “I’ll Tag Along”

Dave Gunning – “Carefree Highway” and “Shadows”

Mad Violet – “Poor Little Alison” and “If You’ve Got It”
It was quite interesting watching Kenyon watching the girls…..

Dan Kershaw & Joey Wright – “I Heard You Talking” and “No Hotel”

Jenney Whiteley – “10 Degrees and Getting Colder” and “Fine AS Fine Can Be”

Jory Nash – “Cotton Jenny” and “Minstrel of The Dawn”
Jory told about being at Mariposa in July 2004 and coming off stage and speaking with Lightfoot for a moment. He asked Lightfoot “When will you be performing again?” and Gord replied, “right after that guy” – pointing to the guy on stage! LOL – He then proceeded to go out and sing “I’ll Tag Along.” Too cool and I am SO jealous of Jory being there for that!

Dave Matheson & Mike Ford – “Steel Rail Blues” and “Summer Side of Life”.
They told the story the night before of meeting Gord and told it again this night. Apparently they met Gord in Denmark and he told them he had written a new song and would let them hear a bit of it! How cool! They then sang a very funny satirical song that Gord “supposedly” wrote. A couple of lines were “she wouldn’t know her arse from a deep hole in the ground” and the last line was “make a child with me.” We all cracked up! I hope Jenney remembers more of it. It was too funny.
Rachel has provided this info: (Rachel is the SUPER organizer of accommodations/travel/food etc. for the artists in the show)
Lyrics to "Gord's Gold" from the Moxy Früvous CD _The_B_Album_ are as follows:
(sung by Mike Ford in a Gord Lightfoot voice)
She had that disposition
Sent all the boys a wishin'
As we trickled down the coast of Peggy's hide-a-way.
We loaded up the cube vans,
The days were steeped in Ray-Bans
That reflected love's embrace from which I shied away.
And I wouldn't know her ass from a deep hole in the ground,
Lined with bushes and a fence that the neighbours placed around;
Make a child with me.
*******
The thing that amazed me that night was that Mike and Dave had the guts to do that song with the whole "we learned it from Gord in Tüner, Norway near the Lego factory" shtick - knowing he was in the audience! Turns out, Gord was on his way up to the green room as they were telling the story and didn't hear a thing. But you better believe Aengus and I were standing on the stairs, willing him with our brainwaves to get upstairs as fast as possible. Pretty funny stuff.

Intermission – I spoke with Jason Fowler for a bit. I sent him a second copy of the Maynard Collins book last year after he mentioned he couldn’t find his. He was very glad to get another copy because his bookshelf just wasn’t right with it missing. I told him I better not see him selling it on EBay! He promised if he ever got his copy back he would send mine back to me.

Aengus Finnan & Jory Nash – “The Wreck”

Aengus Finnan - “Did She Mention My Name”

Susie Vinnick – “I.Y.C.R.M.M.” and “I’d Do It Again”

Jason Fowler – “Cold on The Shoulder”

Justin Rutledge – “Sundown and “Early Morning Rain”
Justin told his mum he was doing two songs that had “dirty” lyrics and were about “fast” women.

Rick Fines – “I’m Not Sayin” Rick said he hears all songs as blues songs. He mentioned that it seemed that Gord found it hard to commit in this song and it got Rick wondering if the next song came before or after the song he was now going to sing…which one came first? He then sang “Ribbon of Darkness.”

J.P.Cormier – “Home From the Forest.” J.P. said he was going to sing one of the greatest songs ever written and unlike when he did his own shows he could say that with a straight face tonight and nobody thinking “that guy’s full of shit.” He then sang “C.R.T.” J.P. then said he was the only one on the tour singing a song that wasn’t a Lightfoot tune. “Oh great, loserboy is going to sing his own song.!” Lol. At a show earlier in the week he had forgotten the lyrics so he was glad that on Friday night when Gordie was there he remembered them all. He worked on his one man tribute album for six years and would send revisions etc. to Barry Harvey who said it was “interesting.” Finally it was done and Gordie said “alright.” “He probably felt sorry for me.”
J.P. said it was a million seller – yep, I‘ve got a million of ‘em in my cellar!” LOL
He mentioned that Dave Gunning was there when the inspiration for the song came. He then sang the wonderful tribute song - “The Poet”

Ensemble on stage for “Alberta Bound” and “Rich Man’s Spiritual”

Standing Ovation!!

Mingled around with Kenyon, Patti, Ron for a bit, hugs to all and then Dan, Nanci and I were off with Jenney, back to the hotel for a few hours sleep!

What a great night – meeting up with everyone and watching them enjoy themselves so much was a huge treat for me. We can do it all again next year!!

heh heh, maybe not just his songwriting/peotry was influenced by Gord but also his 'wit' too ...from listening to the Two Tones it reminds me of the tenor ("ten or twelve dollars") guitar shtick between songs, lol

another 'vivid' review, char...thank you for taking the time again, now i feel like i made all 3 nights (but sure wish i had your night #3 seats: http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif

i like how some of the artists shuffled the songs/setlists a bit, very considerate and Gord-like ala Hamilton and typically Massey (heck, maybe he does that everywhere on multi-nighters http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif)
