I understand that Gord at one time was a Scientologist. Does anyone know if this is still the case?

Where on earth did you hear that?!?

Jesse Joe 05-21-2006 08:01 AM

I dont know, never heard that before. I know he sings around Christmas time in United Church. He once told Pamela Wallin in an interview, that in Orillia he would sing at The United Church, and there was Rosedale United Chuch right at the corner from where he lived, so he would sing there periodicaly. These days he no longer lives in Rosedale. So this is the best that I can do with your question. Im sure others will respond.

Great photo designs by the way your good at it, keep it up...

I have never heard that allegation-ever.

His home church in Orillia was St.Paul's United.

After further research, I see that Gord is a past adherent to Scientology. I am not making this stuff up. Just do a Google search on "Gordon Lightfoot Scientology" and you'll see that he was at one time a Scientologist.

I learned this when a gentleman I worked with discovered I was going to see Gord in concert and he told me he had met him back in the late 60's, early 70's at a Scientolgist get together.

I went to a synagogue a few times back in 1970 or so and a Catholic church in May 2001....attended Presbyterian Sunday school as a wee kid.....can't say I was ever or am now a member/adherent of any of those persuasions tho.

He's noted at a website as a past adherent...doesn't make it fact however.

Please, folks, as a librarian and as big a fan of Google as anyone, please do NOT take information you find posted there (or wikipedia) as gospel (no pun intended) regarding Gord's religion or anyone else's. Not reliable. Nowhere have I ever read Gord himself stating that he is, or ever was, a Scientologist, even in passing. It has been *attributed* to him (and a zillion other celebrities) by others but never by him. Since childhood his church attendance, when mentioned at all, has always been UCC.

At the website www.amIaanoying.com it lists Gord as having Scientologist affiliations. I always wondered where in the world the poster came up with the info, but at that site, they pretty much put up anything that isn't libelous, so I never assumed there was any truth to it.

SilverHeels 05-22-2006 04:36 AM

Hi Rebecca - how you doing?

GoofyGurl 05-22-2006 11:43 AM

Agree with the UCC concept. If you listen to his songs "Mr. Rock of Ages" and "Forgive Me Lord" the lyrics are definitely Christian.
I'm a Christian myself and may just ask him this when I meet him again!!!!

If you listen to the lyrics of "Too Late For Prayin'" or even "Heaven Don't Deserve Me", I Believe its clear that Gord isn't fully convinced in God's existence. At least, thats what I prefer to think.

rickv 06-04-2006 08:40 PM

I agree with Kelly. "Mr. Rock of Ages" and "Forgive Me Lord" make me believe he is of the Christian faith.

Gord grew up in Church. He sung in the church choir. I believe he went to Sunday School and was a regular attender at church with his mom. I believe the songs referred to just reveal that Christian background. His religious upbringing is a part of who he is. However, I don't think that making religious references in his song establishes that he is a Christian. Based on his comments following his near death experience I would suggest that he is not strongly religious. Furthermore, I can point out many lyrics that could suggest he is not a Christian.

Auburn Annie 06-05-2006 11:11 AM

And for what it's worth, his religion, if any and whatever, is his own business. We're just nattering among ourselves, taking up bandwidth.
