Dylan debuts in lingerie advert

Bob Dylan appears in his first television commercial
Music legend Bob Dylan has made his debut in a US TV commercial, promoting lingerie brand Victoria's Secrets.
The 62-year-old's face - sporting a pencil moustache and eyeliner - is intercut with shots of scantily-clad models cavorting in Venice.

Executives had already chosen his 1997 track Love Sick for the ad, and invited Dylan to make a cameo appearance.

Victoria's Secrets is famous for using supermodels in its adverts, including Claudia Schiffer and Heidi Klum.

The advert will air in the US over the coming weeks.

The music Hall of Fame veteran has yet to comment on why he decided to accept the offer to appear in the commercial.

I would be hesitant to say it's wonderful or awful, it's just strange

Dennis Elsas, New York DJ

"I never talked to him about why he decided to come to the party," said the lingerie company's chief creative officer Ed Razek.

"But he did. He's iconic, a living legend," he added.

It is the first time in a career spanning more than 40 years that Dylan has appeared in a TV advertisement.

But his song The Times They Are A-Changin' was used on a Bank of Montreal commercial in 1996, which prompted criticism that the singer had sold out.

Dylan's move has created plenty of activity amongst fans in chatrooms on the internet.

Admiration

One said that he admired the singer for appearing, despite initial reservations.

"I only hope that when I reach Bob Dylan's age someone asks me if I'd like to be flown to Venice to do a commercial with several supermodels," commented the fan.

New York-based disc jockey Dennis Elsas, who has played Dylan's music for decades, branded it as "weird".

"I would be hesitant to say it's wonderful or awful, it's just strange," he said.

..............

What next?

GL selling -

Double glazing - 10 Degrees and Getting Colder.

Listerine Mouth Wash - Never Too Close.

Any other ideas?

I believe it - I've seen it (or part of it, anyway, while channel surfing). A little creepy if you ask me but then Dylan's always weirded me out a bit. Nothing much surprises me anymore.

I would say Dylan has sold out. I think it really undercuts his reputation to do such a thing. For Lightfoot it's allways been "about the songs". For Dylan it's just a business now. Too bad. No standards.

It's too bad that Dylan beat Lightfoot to the punch. After all GL is the one "wearing polka-dot underwear...

Aloa Vera? Remember me?

SomewhereupinMichigan 04-07-2004 06:23 PM

Yep...saw the ad the other day and remarked to my wife, with some surprise, that Dylan would do it. But, you know, it really doesn't bother me in the least! I hope he was well paid for his time! I'd sooner hear Dylan's music and see his image in the ad than the local goofballs that pitch me cars day-in and day-out 24/7.

BILLW 04-07-2004 07:26 PM

OMG, a well known celebrity made a commercial? You must be pulling my leg. I'll throw all my Dylan CDs in the driveway and drive over them with my truck and I might slit my wrists with the shards of plastic. Nah - how about "more power to 'im mate" I think he's earned the right to do whatever he feels like. It'd be nice to be so talented, no?

sell out shmell out.

he can do what he wants. if he'd quit back in the 60s, he still would have done more than any other performer.

during his famous 1965 san francisco press conference, a reporter asked him if he'd sell out to anything down the track and he said "ladies garments". there was the warning 40 years ago http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif

i don't blame him for wanting to prance around with that brunette for a few seconds.

if you look at it from a fan's point of view, we get to hear a small part of an outtake of Love Sick - unreleased till now and the firts outtake to emerghe from the time out of mind album, even though its 20 seconds of it..

he was at the point 38 years ago where he could do what he wanted and get away with it. leave him be...

Gaby 04-07-2004 07:52 PM

Yes! Of course, he can do what he wants.
Frankly, I swing either way on this one. (Can I use that expression here?)

He’s always had a wicked sense of humour.

“Advertising signs that con you “

Well? Who’s conning who?

what are the html tags that you use to add pictures here??

So you're saying someone offered Dylan the opportunity to hang out with beautiful women AND get paid for it and he said yes? I'm in shock. Who knew any man would sink so low.

I suppose I might be more offended, or maybe not, if they'd used one of his songs that helped define an era. I'm not that familiar with the song they have used and I have no attachment or feeling associated with it.

But I'm not sure what it would take for me to scream sell out these days.

they used Love Sick which is from the 1997 album time out of mind

Borderstone 04-08-2004 03:31 AM

Did you even stop to think that maybe he just wanted to be near the women???? http://www.corfid.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.corfid.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.corfid.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.corfid.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Maybe this is what he meant by,"Rainy Day Women #12 & #35"!! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/wink.gif Or even,"Gotta Serve Somebody!" Might as well be Victoria's i say.
Sell out?? Oh please! If he were going to sell out he would have recorded,"Sugar Sugar" or "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye!"
I say an artist also sells out if they openly speak on camera about the product.
That's hawking & selling. Lastly,V.'s Secret helps a lot of couples in intimate moments, what's wrong with that? http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif Later! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/cool.gif
