Three Days Grace And Ian Thornley To Honour The Guess Who

The John Bassett Theatre in Toronto's Metro Convention Centre has become best known as the home of Canadian Idol, but the concert hall will be filled with many of the people who inspire the Idol hopefuls next month. The Canadian Songwriters Hall Of Fame will be inducting a selection of great Canadian songs and their writers on February 8 and the list of performers who will celebrate the songs is just as impressive.

A Canadian all-star band featuring Tom Cochrane, Three Days Grace, Ian Thornley, Jeff Healey and Margo Timmins of The Cowboy Junkies will gather to perform The Guess Who’s hits "American Woman" and "No Time," while Jacksoul will perform "These Eyes." The Guess Who's Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings will also be around to accept their award (from fellow songwriting great Gordon Lightfoot) and perform a couple songs.

A kaleidoscope of other Canadian performers will take the stage to perform their own songs and honour other songwriters of the past. The list of performers includes the likes of Colin James, Matt Dusk, Buffy Saint-Marie, Shaye, Joe Sealy and Ian Tyson.

The gala will be broadcast live across Canada on CBC Radio One at 8 p.m. and then re-broadcast again on CBC Radio Two on Sunday, February 13 at 2 p.m.

A limited number of tickets to the concert will be available through Ticketmaster for $50 each.

Okay, who is going to have the honor of taping this? I wish I could get Canadian TV, I even called Dish Network when I found out that they have foreign channels - Canada isn't foreign enough but Mexico is. Mexico doesn't have Gord!

CBC Radio is broadcast on the internet, so any of us can listen and - with the right software and a bit of patience setting it up - any of us can record it. I know Char tried before the Peterborough concert and didn't get it working, but for anyone interested in capturing these moments, it's worth giving it a try.

Yes, I'd like to try that too, but, I have NO clue as to how to even "get" CBC radio on the internet. I suppose first I'd have to access their website and try from there?

Yes, that is step one. Figure out how to listen. Go to the CBC (at cbc.ca )site, place your mouse pointer over Radio, and choose Listen (the bottom choice). You then pick a location (I generally choose Toronto, but others may be useful if Toronto gets overloaded). They have high and low bandwidth. Their streams use Windows Media Player, so you'll need something that can play that. If you can view the Inspiration Lady video, you are all set.

One you know how to listen, you will need to choose some recording software. I have been recommending Music Match, because I found it easy to install and useful for other things as well (eg ripping CDs into one of several formats). There is a free version which will do the job quite nicely.

It will take a bit of fiddling (no pun intended, Cathy) to figure out how to record but you have plenty of time. The key is that you are recording what is playing through your sound card. That is, if you hear it through your speakers, that is what you will record. (Plan to turn off your chat programs, if you don't want to hear their sounds during the show and on your recording).

You have to specify the sound card as your input (I think they call it "mixer"), and then click on their "record" button. If you get this far, you will will want to go through the process of starting it, stopping it, and then finding the recording in your library so you can export it. That way, you'll have a separate file (usually mp3) with the recording.

If you figure out how to do this, I'm sure you will find lots of uses for it. This won't be "CD quality", but neither is the streamed broadcast. This works very nicely for casual recordings and is about the same as recording a radio show on cassette.

for both Radio One and Radio Two.
once you get as sound,
you need to get prepared to record it
Suitable free software is available personally I would recommend MusicMatch every time
just go to http://www.musicmatch.com and download version 9 for Windows 98/98SE
or if you are fortunate enough to already have the more stable Windows XP MusicMatch version 10 is for you (I believe the original XP shipped with MusicMatch version 8 included but I could be wrong. Start MusicMatch then find the recorder settings item and set up for "line in" and it should record whatever is coming out of your speakers.
I say should because I tried this during the Peterborough concert in August and recorded zilch.I must try again then complete a tutorial on MusicMatch that has been in the queue for quite a while.

Speaking of Cathy and computer sounds in recordings, I'm reminded of a story she told ages ago of her recording of The Edmund Fitzgerald complete with "mooing" background vocals due to an untimely IM from Val - that was a very funny story, especially once her dog, Snoop, added some barking to the mix http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif

I have one question. Won't a 2 hr 15 minute show make a VERY big MP3? Is that going to work? Will it all fit on one CD?

bj, i'm no teenager BUT why not put in a audio cassette tape in today at 2pm EST and 'capture' the show on CBC Radio 2, i think it's nation wide...don't you get that out there?
