After hearing about him here, I decided to order the JP Cormier tribute CD. It came yesterday, and I am really enjoying it. He has one song on it that he wrote about Gord, that I thought you'd all enjoy:

The Poet

I remember the lonely poet that slipped in through my door.
His shadow lean and hungry lying on my parlor floor.
The world lay in shades of gray upon his pencil tip [I love that line!]
And I rushed to catch the truth that was falling from his lips.

Well I don't know how he got there, when he came, he came alone.
Stealing through the dusty cracks of my brother's gramophone.
Sailing through the bitter green on rails made of steel.
He made a young boy's dreams of flying seem that they were real.

And he spoke to me in pictures I clearly understood.
I'd have to face my story, be it bad or good.
And though I never wore his clothes, I've tried to fill his shoes,
'Cause he made me want to be a poet too.

Well he spoke of love and soldiers and the reasons why we lose.
The things that bring us happiness are things that we must choose.
He left the answers lying in the early morning rain,
And the likes of that young stranger will not be seen again.

Now I'm a lonely poet just like he was before.
My shadow's lean and hungry lying on the parlor floor.
And I wonder if he knows the seed his wisdom left behind,
Growing like a flower in the shadows of my mind.

Cheers

Yes, it is a wonderful song. A few people have said so already, but I think it is much more than that. It's not the first tribute song written to honor Lightfoot, but I think it is by far the best. It is Lightfoot influenced music, without being a copy of any song. It is Travis picked, as are many Lightfoot trademark songs, and J.P. has written beautiful lyrics using many references to Lightfoot songs without being corny. I think it's a rather brilliant song myself.

Wow! I love the imagery in those lyrics, it's the same way his music seem to happen for me. Lovely. Thanks for posting the lyrics, I hadn't seen them before.

same here, lsh...but it was my bro's 8 track (but doesn't rhyme quite so well, lol)

glad the JP buzz is starting to spread and linger...thanks for taking the time, Rona http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif

i love em all, Val but i think you're right...Finnan's 'breaths Canada' so wonderfully but perhaps JP's is truly global http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif

ps) play along in Eb (or make life easy, throw capo +1, ride D...CG, etc http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif)

Thanks Rona, that is a captivating song. It catches you immediately and it is impossible not to read every word. Looks like JP just sold another CD.

Why does he talk of GL in the past tense?
