John, it's a wonder I could get my fingers working at all, it was so bloody cold today. The cancelled school because they couldn't start the buses (wind chill of 23 below, air temp of 5 below - and we were the "hot" spot of central New York.)

John, your link to macleans does not work, does the website exist? Also the picture does not appear. Can I recommend that you go elsewhere on this site where you will find an in depth explanation on how to post pictures. I am unable to recall the name of the author. I am sure somebody else can.

A quick edit to say that the link is now working, and I can see the http://www.macleans.ca/images/maclogo_v2.gif at the top of the page. Yesterday, not so. Strange animals these computers.

That is normal mid January weather for us. Last year we had a few days that hit -45 and the wind chills were -65 to -70. Try starting your car in that.
We all have block heaters in our cars. We plug them in to heat up the oil and antifreeze. Otherwise, our cars wouldn't start.

Heh heh - it turns out it was a total comedy of errors at the school. The superintendent had only planned a one-hour delay, since there was no snow to slow folks down. Then late (7:30 am) came a call that the diesel fuel in the bus tanks was jelling because of the cold, leading to some stalling out and some not working at all. Since it was too cold for walking he decided to close the schools but the local TV stations were reporting a 2 hour delay - and he started getting calls from the local Y, day care providers, parents etc. So he tried calling the local stations to clarify that the schools were to be closed, only to have a hard time convincing station managers that he wasn't a crank caller.

Meanwhile at one of the middle schools, an open window caused a heating coil to freeze, burst, and spill water into the library and computer room one floor below. He also didn't have correct phone numbers for some contacts, others had their cell phones turned off, some numbers had been changed without updating, etc.

Once the "crisis" had passed, the superintendent updated his call list, added extra contacts, and talked with the general managers of the three TV stations to be sure they know who he is and how to confirm school delays and closings with him. I suspect he then had a stiff drink and went back to bed.

Annie, although I probably shouldn't have thought that story was funny, it really gave me quite the chuckles! Although I begged my husband to move us to Toronto (where he's from) after the Northridge earthquake, I have to admit -- I really prefer our L.A. weather! I am, however, sending warm thoughts!

We have a school delay ticker that scrolls across the bottom of the screen on our local TV station.
The only time they cancel school up here is when there is a severe weather alert, with snowfalls over 6 inches combined with high wind, or when the wind chill drops down to 45 below zero. Most of us have grown up in this climate and we learn ways to deal with it. The severe cold lasts for three weeks or so, and then it warms back up to zero or above. After a spell of 30 to 70 below wind chills, zero degrees feels quite balmy.
For instance, on Sunday it was 30 degrees. Everyone, including me, was running around in thin fleece jackets.
