Hey, congratulations on the best artist website I've seen. Please help! This may sound weird, but I don't know the name of my favorite GL song. I used to hear it in about '79, but never did know the title. The refrain goes something like this: "I can see it in your eyes and feel it in the way you kiss my lips..... I can hear it in your voice whenever we're talking like this...." Please tell me if you know the album and song. Based upon the posts that I've read so far, I'm betting that this group can fix me up. By the way, I rate this song (whatever it is) as number one, followed by "If You Could Read My Mind". Thanks in advance for your help.

The Circle Is Small (Songbook) 3:36

It's alright for some but not alright for me
When the one that I'm lovin' slips around
You think it's fine to do things I cannot see
And you're doin' it to me
Baby can't you see that I know how it is
I can see it in your eyes and feel it in the way you kiss my lips
I can hear it in your voice whenever we are talking like this
I can see the way you look when his name is mentioned and I die
I can watch the way you walk, the way you talk, the way you close your eyes

It's alright for some but not alright for me
When the one that I'm lovin' can't be found
The city where we live might be quite large
But the circle is small
Why not tell us all and then all of us will know

I can see it in your eyes and feel it in the way you kiss my lips
I can hear it in your voice whenever we are talking like this
I can see the way you look when his name is mentioned and I die
I can watch the way you walk, the way you talk, the way you close your eyes

It's alright to leave but not alright to lie
When you come home and you can't say where you've been
You think it's fine to do things I cannot see
And you're doin' it to me
Baby can't you see that I know how it is

I can see it in your eyes and feel it in the way you kiss my lips
I can hear it in your voice whenever we are talking like this
I can see the way you look when his name is mentioned and I die
I can watch the way you walk, the way you talk, the way you close your eyes

Just so you don't buy the "wrong" album (there is no "wrong" GL album), you should know that the version you heard on the radio in the late 70s was the rerecording from the album Endless Wire. That is also the version on the Rhino boxed set Songbook. This recording was the second one GL released for that song. As Char said, the song was written and first released back in the 60s when Gord was still with United Artists. That is the version on Back Here On Earth and the United Artists Collection. Gord prefers the rerecording, and since that's the one you fell in love with, I'd go for that first.

I first heard it on Back Here On Earth and wasn't impressed but when it came out on Endless Wire I loved it. It's a very interesting viewpoint from Gord after his "That's What You Get For Lovin'Me" ! As Joni Mitchell says - "I've Looked At Love From Both Sides Now." LOL

Wow! Thanks for the response, guys. Do any of you know if Endless Wire is available somewhere on CD? Also, since I don't run into many GL fans, I'm curious -- what current artists do you like? Most that I like do not exactly gel with Gordon Lightfoot style music; I like Collective Soul, Garbage, quite a bit of stuff like that. I have a 15-year-old that is horrified that I would like any music that he listens to......

Yes, Endless Wire is available on CD. If you don't see it locally (for shame on the stores), you can get it at any of the online stores.

I too have a 15 year-old and I CAN'T listen to anything he listens to (Nine Inch Nails, Rage Against The Machine ...). I have to admit that I don't listen to much other than Lightfoot, but I do like Billy Joel, Phil Collins, Bob Dylan and several others too.

I have a 16 year old with an electric guitar and wah-wah pedal!!!HELP!!!
He plays all of that "stuff" they call music!! He does play American Pie on his acoustic to appease me when I am losing my mind! And he even sings the words - so I won't. LOL
If only he would try some Gord!

This is so funny. I too am bless with a seventeen year old. But I'm really lucky. The kid is into the classics. Pink Floyd, Blue Oyster Cult, and Santana. Go figure.
