wouldn't it be great if we all liked "beautiful"? It is such an incomprehensibly wonderful song.

Gwen,
I agree with you. I have a hard time understanding that a Lightfoot fan wouldn't like "Beautiful". But, some people don't like steak either. Some people don't like football. Some folks HATE snow. ANY SNOW. There are people who don't like cats. I even know someone that doesn't like John Wayne or John Wayne movies of any kind. I think "Beautiful" is in my top 10-15 all time favorite Lightfoot songs. I appreciate the fact that not everyone may like the same things, but I like pretty much all of GL's music. If everyone liked the same thing the world would be a boring place. [This message has been edited by titan (edited August 28, 2003).] |

I too am a fan of Beautiful, I think it certainly says a lot about the author. Titan speaking of snow! It is in the forecast for this weekend. I did have to use the icescraper on my windshield at 6:30 this morning. A long winter coming! I think I will sit around and listen to ASFAWN and Beautiful!

Be grateful for that windshield ice! For the last decade and a half, I've had to deal with gorgeous weather 360 days of the year. Palm trees, sunshine, attractive people everywhere. It's been like an endless vacation. I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE! Seriously, seasons enliven one's soul, I think, whereas nonstop beauty turns one into a zombie. Which brings us back to "Beautiful": I adore it. --Over And Out From Southern California

John Wayne (in many of his great movie roles) is the epitome of what's best about America: the character and courage to battle evil. It is a trait sorely lacking in much of today's world.

We're getting a wee bit off-topic here. For the record, I love "Beautiful" but like many of Gord's better known songs I listen to it infrequently so I don't get burnt out - thank goodness he has such a large playlist to choose from.
As for the late John Wayne, he was more icon (for good or ill) than actor. I've never been in agreement with his very conservative politics (and I've never been able to watch "The Green Berets" all the way through, but that's me with many war movies) but he has a handful of movies I can watch without clenching my teeth, mostly John Ford flicks like "The Searchers" or "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon," and most of "The Quiet Man" and "True Grit." One seldom shown movie is "The Hellfighters", based on the life of Red Adair who spent his life putting out oil fires - one of the few JW movies my husband and I can both watch (it helps that it's got Jim Hutton, Vera Miles, Jay C Flippen and Katharine Ross in it, shot on location in Malaya and Venezuela.) A "B" movie at best but less irritating than some of his work. |

Is BEAUTIFUL not considered one of Lightfoot's "hit records"? I'm sure I recall hearing it (in the days of my childhood) played often on Detroit radio. I've always assumed it is one of his most popular tunes, but maybe I'm completely wrong...

One more thing about John Wayne. I haven't seen all his movies but in 'The Searchers' he was the worst about bullying than any of his movies that I had seen.

DMD3 Get a copy of McLintok! You will like that. As far as the Searchers, I have a VERY soft spot for that one. My mother was pregnant with me when that came out. I was going to be Becky Sue, but she liked the movie and Natalie Wood so she named me Deby. A far better choice as far as I am concerned. Wayne also was a music fan, he put Ricky Nelson and Bobby Vinton in his movies to give them a career boost. Politics-I agree he was entirely too conservative, but he wasn't the only one back then. He was good entertainment, I liked the westerns I am glad Kevin Costner is making westerns although he needs to stop killing the dogs. Anyway I still like the song Beautiful!

Well, alright Pilgrim! The Watchman and I finally agree completely on something!

Back to topic...Beautiful was, for many years, my all time favorite Lightfoot song. I still appreciate it greatly. It was, in fact, a fairly substantial hit for Gord, receiving considerable air play in the mid 70s. This was primarily on the so-called Adult Contemporary stations of that day, though you will not find it listed as one of his biggest hits.
