i've never heard of this guy but:
this is in today's Toronto SUN paper:

Weller's got it covered
By DARRYL STERDAN
Winnipeg Sun

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
STUDIO 150
Paul Weller
(V2/BMG)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Love Paul Weller so much you'd listen to him sing the phone book? Now's your chance.

OK, not quite -- but on Studio 150, the former Jam master and Style Councilman does croon a veritable catalogue of covers. And not the Beatles and Kinks oldies you might expect.

Instead, Paul blows his smoky '70s soul and singer-songwriter stylings over everything from Dylan's All Along the Watchtower and Neil Young's Birds to Gordon Lightfoot's Early Morning Rain and The Carpenters' Close to You.

It's not as compelling as an album of originals would be, admittedly, but you can't accuse him of phoning it in.

Well,Charlene..as long as he didn't take anything away from the true feeling of the song,I'd more than likely lok for it and buy it if it's available here in the states.

Hope also that like anyone who does a cover version,he's a true fan and not just an artist doing a cover for the sake of covering it. Thanks for the clue in! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif Later! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/cool.gif

Paul Weller has a big following in the UK.
This cd is something new for him

I've only listened to the song online once, but I actually like his rendition of Early Morning Rain, a lot - can't say the same for what he did with Close To You http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif

Paul Weller is HUGE in the UK and has a loyal following in North America. He has been making the BEST music in the world since 1977 and is regarded as highly as Lennon/McCartney in many circles.

Thought this had a familiar ring to it. A quick search found the following post from Jim Nasium last year.

Just checked the Top 40 here in the UK and Paul Weller has come in at 40 with Early Morning Rain.
And for all you Tony Christie fans, he is No 1 with 'Is This The Way To Amerillo?

Whilst on the subject of EMR covers I have just posted on
http://www.corfid.com/ubb/ultimatebb...c;f=1;t=003863
a picture of
Seamus Begley and Mary Black singing "Early Morning Rain" at concert in Killarney 25 July 2003
As I have fond memories of Mary's wonderful song "Adam At The Window
I found a very nice 30 second clip downloadable at:-
http://www.blackfamilyresources.com/...undclips/2.mp3
As I love her voice I googled for any recorded version by her or Seamus of EMR and found his is on an album
ALBUM TITLE: Ragairne (Revelling at Night)
ARTIST: Séamus Begley & Jim Murray
see:-
http://www.tradtunes.com/album_detai...?album_id=3362
there is a lihk on that page to a 19 second sample of their version that may be downloaded for free (the complete mp3 goes for a buck)
Whilst googling for EMR images I found details of an early Jerry Garcia/Grateful Dead album containing their version of EMR
http://media.bestprices.com/content/music/10/477713.jpg
album "Birth Of The Dead"
details at:-
http://www.bestprices.com/cgi-bin/vl...7439125BT.html
also on amazon with EMR samples at:-
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00007LTIF/qid=11...http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00007LTIF/qid=11... and to complete this review there are samples of Paul Weller's version at:-
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002SPQ3Q/qid=11...http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002SPQ3Q/qid=11...
