On August 8th I was treated to a Lightfoot concert as a birthday present from my wife. Nice gig...the first time I'd seen Gord live since the early 90s. Strong show, good material selection (can't remember set list)...and he played "Minstral of the Dawn" by request -- highlight of the show!!!

Hope we get to see the Massey shows...don't know our schedule yet.

This sons was also requested on August 6th and he switched guitars to play it. The audience was very greatful.

Gord said it was a "really serious" request in letter form submitted at the previous gig, and that the person requesting it would be at the NY show. He apologized saying, "I'm sorry to tell you we had to work on it!". It was done in the middle of the second set. The enunciation problems he's had singing sometimes just melted away on that song -- sounded REALLY clean and strong like the early days. Also did "Song for a Winter's Night" as one of the last songs of the night after people yelled for it from the audience.

By the way...if you go to Wolftrap, bring your own food -- the only place to eat was an overpriced cafe on the grounds!

I personally think 'Minstrel' was his best vocal. It also had a perfect clear sound.
Because of that, it may be quite intimidating to perform now.I think its one of the essentials. Mainly because of the lyrics and expression.

I, too, got Wolftrap on the 8th as a birthday present. My birthday is in May so I had an agonizing wait! My 26 year old son gave me this great gift and he was also my date. He's a Shania/Reba/Celine fan and I wasn't sure how he'd take this music. He was impressed and surprised that he knew some of the songs! He grew up hearing Mr. L's music on my stereo but he said he really didn't pay attention...imagine that! His only negative comment was that the t-shirt in the second set did not fit the music. I think I agree but have no suggestion as an alternative. I'd never seen Gordon Lightfoot live and was really amazed at how many people were at Wolftrap on a very hot night with a serious threat of thunderstorms. Amazing...I'm not alone in my "fandom". I like all the old, old songs but I think my favorite album is "East of Midnight". "Painter..." is growing on me...slowly. His voice on that album is different than earlier years but, strangely, his concert voice is somewhere in between then and now. Another of my kids asked me if I would go again...probably. Now let's see...how far is Wabash or Fort Wayne from my mom's house in South Bend...hmmm!

I was at the NYC concert and was also treated to "Mistrel of the Dawn." What a delight, the highlight of the show! Gord also mentioned that a fan had requested it.

After the show, we waited at the door to get Gord's autograph. The guy next to me was named Mike from Pittsburgh area, and as we struck up a conversation it was he who had written the letter to request Minstrel. When Gord came out (shook his hannd and got his autograph on my Songbook booklet), Mike identified himself and he and Gord had a nice conversation about Minstrel and about Mike's letter. Gord mentioned that the letter sounded real sincere (in its request) so he had decided to do Minstrel again. Apparently, it will be in the repetoire for a while.

I intend to make a full report re the NYC concert, including set list and including my conversation with Gord about Char's appearance at Mariposa, but it will have to wait until I have a little more time. Probably this weekend.
