I keep hearing bits and pieces of a song by Gordon, but never enough to identify the title. The lyrics say something like, "havent had a word today", although I'm probably butchering that. What is it?

Sounds to me like you might be referring to Talking In Your Sleep from the album Summer Side Of Life. I have included the lyrics from the Song area of this web site for you to confirm or rule out my thought. Whether it’s the song in question or not, it is a great one! One of my favorites.
Talking In Your Sleep (Summer Side of Life) I heard you talking in your sleep Is there anything that I can do I don't believe we've had a word all day 'Bout anything at all I heard you talking in the night That's right, yes I heard ya call Though I could hardly hear the name you spoke It's a name I don't recall I heard you softly whisper I reached out to hold you near me Then from your lips there came that secret I was not supposed to know I heard you talking in your sleep Is there anything that I can say I don't believe we've had a word all day 'Bout anything at all I heard you talking in the night That's right, yes I heard ya call Though I could hardly hear the name you spoke It's a name I don't recall I heard you talking in your sleep Is there anything that I can do I don't believe we've had a word all day 'Bout anything at all |

I would concur with Janice; "Talking In Your Sleep" was the song that immediately came to mind for me too. However, my greater interest is in knowing when, where and how often you've been hearing bits and pieces of this song? After all, Summer Side of Life was a lot of years ago and "Talking" was never a "hit" song so I'm curious just where you've been picking up snippets of this song? Is some commercial entity REALLY playing Gord's music these days????
Just curious SomewhereUpInMichigan! |
I have a line that's driving me crazy too -- I saw Gord live in NY in 1965 and always thought this was from a well-known song but can't find it anywhere (maybe it wasn't written by him but in my memory, I hear his voice singing it), "And we'll maybe meet again when winter's through ..." Anyone? Thanks to all who love GL, Mandy (mandymercier.com)

Hi Mandy.
I was hoping someone would answer your question, and stop me from making a fool of myself... but NO. Therefore although the words are not the same, (and 1965 is a long time ago.. lol) I have a feeling that the song maybe " Four Strong Winds " by Ian Tyson.. Have a read of this and tell me what you think.. Four strong winds that blow lonely Seven seas that run high All those things that don’t change come what may But our good times are all gone And I’m bound for moving on I look for you if I’m ever back this way Think I’ll go out to Alberta Weather’s good there in the fall Got some friends I can go to working for Still I wish you change your mind If I asked you one more time But we’ve been thru that a hundred times or more If I get there before the snow flies And if things are going good You could meet me if I send you down the fare But by then it would be winter Ain’t too much for you to do And those winds sure can blow cold way out there Keep Smiling.. have a great weekend ..everyone. Thanks all, especially Janice. "Talking in your Sleep" is it, for sure. As to the post, wondering where I'm hearing this at on the dial, I work in the Flint, MI area, and am fortunate to be able to pick up CFCO, 630 on the AM dial, out of Chatham, Ont. They play stuff you never hear anywhere else, and it's about the only music I listen too on the radio, anymore. Just too much repetition, loudmouths, and filth on FM, anymore. Anyway, they play quite a bit of Gordon, and not just hit hits.

rtallen, you're lucky. I wish we had a station nearby where I could hear gems all day. We have two stations (both fm) that play Gord occasionally, but it's always the popular (Sundown, IYCRMM, etc.) I have heard Rainy Day People while grocery shopping at Acme, though.

Ahhh...yes! rt, I should have guessed it would be on a Canadian station, but I didn't know you were in Flint. I'm in Owosso/Lansing and have picked up a lot of Gord from stations across the border too. Certainly a shame that "commercial" stations stateside do not play anything worth listening to any more, least of all Gord's music! I used to be in that business in the 70s and early 80s and always programmed a good dose of Gord!!

I've always loved "Talking in Your Sleep" because it's so understated. The lovely, bittersweet sadness, the obvious truth lying there unsaid. No one puts so much into so few words like Gord.
