I've never seen Tears are Not Enough. How cool that Gordon was the first to sing!
Of course USA for Africa is a familiar one as well as "Do They Know..." on the latter there were some really great vocals from Boy George, Simon Le Bon, Sting, Bono, Paul Young et al. This has always been one of my favorite holiday songs. Good stuff JJ! |
I agree Jennifer. You should try to find the VHS or DVD, of the making of," Tears Are Not Enough." It is interesting to view all that Canadian talent. Bruce Allen, manager for Bryan Adams and Anne Murray, getting Gord on the phone and asking him, to do it. " For God sake Gordon, the first 2 lines."{LOL}

I was midway through 16 when USA For Africa came about and hit #1 here in the U.S with "We Are The World".
It came directly after "Do They Know It's Christmas?" a #13 hit during the '84/'85 holiday season. On the USA for Africa album was the Canadian Northern Lights track we're talking about. I saw the clip ages ago and am still kicking myself for getting rid of the LP. :rolleyes: Who better than Gordon to lead off the singing? I can't imagine anyone. Great as they might be. :) |
Yes, I have a vinyl copy of the Northern Lights LP, and I recall reading *somewhere* that the Canadian artists took a vote on who'd open the song. The definate honour by his peers was bestowed upon Gordon. Who else ?
There was a lot of talent there, too. We've all read the names - Bryan Adams, Anne Murray et al; 30-odd stars as I recall. I've always thought that being honoured by your peers is the highest form and feels the best. Good for Gord ! On a side note, does anyone else recall there were a few hilarious spoof skits of the "We are the World", and "Tears are not Enough" by SNL, SCTV, and if I remember right, even "In Living Colour". For some reason these songs (I guess its rather obvious...) make me recall the debut, at least as I remember it, of the Coca-Cola song "I'd Like to buy the World a Coke" [sic] or some such title as they sang around the outdoor decorated Christmas Tree. That was a big single, too. Well, thats along enough ramble down memory lane today I 'spect :) geo Steve |
Hey Geo. Long time replying but the,
"I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing" (song) came first,before the Coca-Cola ad. I saw that ad a lot back then. One version (the best version) was by The New Seekers,a somewhat different version of the original "Seekers". Version 2 (just okay) was by the Hillside Singers. ---------------------- On the subject of our topic here, I just came from new & used record/CD store Zia and I have found a perfect copy of the USA for Africa LP. :) I now,once again,have "Tears Are Not Enough", & the vinyl is A+! :) Not only is the outer jacket perfect,it has the lyrics sleeve inside and on the back of that is the picture ad of "available" USA for Africa mechandise and seperatley the original postcard order form. :cool: The LP I gave away years ago was in crummy shape,inside & out by the early '90s. |

David Foster had Lightfoot in mind right from the git-go for the first line of the song..
really now, - who else could it have been? ;) ;) ;) |
