J.P. Cormier is a performer I had never heard of before. I was doing random Web searches for GL material and found one of his songs that shared a phrase ("sidewalks of despair") with Go-Go Round - the GL song from which my user ID is taken. Hmmm.

So anyway, reading on about Mr. Cormier, I discovered that he is planning to release a Gordon Lightfoot tribute album sometime this fall. If you all have already heard of this, I apologize for the redundancy.

I think I'll keep an eye on it. I always like to hear different interpretations of Gord's work, as they help me to shape my own.

this could be good stuff... saw him perform with gordie sampson (did some writing with the rankin family) in oakville last year... big guy, huge talent! + witty stories, similar delivery to that of fred eaglesmith http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif

looks like the fall release is deferred until Jan05 (maybe the Hugh's Room gig in T.O. will double as a CD release launch?)

got this from a Red Deer article:

"Cormier will play at least one Gordon Lightfoot song from the new Lightfoot album The Long River which is scheduled for release in January. Cormier is the sole musician on the 19-song tribute, playing six and 12 string guitars, drums, percussion, strings, keyboards, fiddle, banjo, mandolin, piano, electric and acoustic bass and performing all vocals"

JP Cormier is one of 12 or so artists participating in our yearly Ontario-based Lightfoot Tribute concerts. Each artist plays 2 tunes of their own choosing. JP will be playing the Canadian Railroad Trilogy and another that I won't share until JP plays it on stage in January (gotta keep some things secret!).

JP is a highly respected (Juno-nominated, ECMA-award winning) Canadian roots artist and we're honoured to have him as one of the artists appearing at this year's tribute concerts (of which the aforementioned Hugh's Room dates are included).

too bad i just missed him at the lovely Sanderson Centre but i've seeen alot of Rita MacNeil over the years already (didn't realize this was their 'farewell' tour, too bad)

just added this per Hamilton spectator article:he's releasing a tribute CD of 18 Lightfoot songs and one song he wrote for Lightfoot called The Poet. Again, Cormier plays every instrument (and sings all the vocals) on the album, called The Long River. "I didn't even mean to do it really," Cormier says. "I was just doing it as a release, as a vent to get into some other material that wasn't my own and that I loved better than anything else." Cormier had originally planned to release it two years ago, but held it back when Lightfoot fell critically ill with an abdominal aneurism. He waited until Lightfoot was fully recovered before deciding to release it. "If he had died it would never have seen the light of day," he adds. Cormier also waited until he got Lightfoot's permission. The only other tribute which Lightfoot has approved was a compilation put together by Colin Linden of more than a dozen artists, many of whom Lightfoot admired. There was also a compilation culled from 30 years of albums by the great bluegrass guitarist Tony Rice. That was issued by Rounder Records in the U.S. without Lightfoot's knowledge. "He's never, ever approved another songwriter doing a complete album of his stuff," Cormier says.

Cormier's album focuses on the early Lightfoot years with gems such as The Circle is Small (done with a touch of bluegrass), Bitter Green, Home From the Forest, Early Morning Rain and Canadian Railroad Trilogy. So far,
Cormier has shied away from playing Lightfoot material on the MacNeil tour. He's saving it for a series of tribute concerts he'll be performing in January (including three nights at Toronto's Hugh's Room, Jan. 14-16) with other artists like Lynn Miles, Jenny Whiteley and Aengus Finnan. "It seems kind of strange to play a Lightfoot song when you're playing with another one of the greatest Canadian songwriters that ever lived (Rita MacNeil)," Cormier says."
