Has anyone ever gone through a period when they don't listen to Gord at all for a few days or weeks or even months?

I have done this two or three times in the past 10 years. Not usually for very long - maybe a month at the most. Don't get me wrong. Gord is still my favorite - hands down. The bright side of this is that when I "come back", the songs sound so new and fresh, even though I know every word.

I own 600 - 700 c.d.'s so maybe it's just a matter of having too many choices to listen to.

Don't think I've ever seen this topic posted before and thought it would be interesting to hear if anyone else actually has experienced this "dry spell".

I go quite long periods without any music of any kind...I don't listen to radio and I don't own a car where a lot of people listen to music/radio. I don't have a portable cd player or Ipod...If I listen it's on my computer with cd's I've downloaded. I honestly can't remember the last time I listened to Lightfoot music that I put on...
Probably in October when I was working on some glass pieces for the Massey convention...
I guess having toddlers in the house for 10 hours a day and listening to them, their music, their tv shows/videos etc. makes me cherish the quiet when they leave and then time to watch a few TV shows I enjoy or time to read in the silence...
But when I do want to listen I can play the same CD or CD mix I've made over and over for hours/days...

It's been quite awhile since I "seriously" listened to a lot of Gordon Lightfoot but it's not that I'm tired of him...No Way! :D

It's just that if I do play it too much,I'm afraid that's what'll happen! :eek: like anything else we indulge in in life,moderation is key. ;)

As for other music,in the now last 30 years,I've heard enough hits & albums to last me for a looooonnnng time! I don't really listen toi the radio anymore either,it's predictable,regimented and dull! :rolleyes:

The DJ's are flat out annoying and don't even answer the phones anymore unless "they" say so! :mad:

Give me satellite or my record collection any day!

Sure thing Kelly ! I usually play all 20 CDs in order when I'm prepping for a concert and then about a week before I cut it off. Then I listen to something else because with his voice as it is now I don't want to compare it to 40 year old studio cuts. But I want the 'tunes' to be fresh in my head. Nuts ? Maybe !

Then after the show I usually burn a CD with the songs he performed in the same order he did them. I listen to that until I get distracted and then...

a dry spell, as you call it. Then something will spark me back to him and so forth and so on...

I also have multiple hundreds of CDs (don't think I've hit 600 yet ??) so I get lost sometimes just trying to pick ONE, LOL.

I can go long stretches without listening to my favourite artists, even thugh they've been at the top of my list for 35+years. I can also go the opposite way and all of a sudden latch on to something and play it to death for weeks on end.

No, Gord and all never leave me, but sometimes I just take a break and enjoy other things.

Same here. First discovered Gord in the mid 60s, listened through all the UA and early Warner years (my teens, 20s, early 30s) then had a family and lost touch with all music except kid stuff for quite a while. Plus there were the format changes, from vinyl to cassette and 8-track to CD and now MP3 and who knows what else? Somewhere about 6 or 7 years ago I came across a Lightfoot song I didn't remember hearing, "Miguel" and was instantly smitten once again. Of course I *had* heard Miguel before but it had been SO many years I'd actually forgotten the song. That launched me on a wonderful rediscovery of all things Lightfoot, and I rebuilt my collection with CDs and downloads to my computers at home and at work. Many a third year resident was exposed to his music when stopping by the library while I was cataloging in the work room - don't know if I made any converts but had a couple ask, "who's that?" which gave me the opportunity to spread the gospel of Gord, lol. Now I listen intermittently but my computers have it all and I've got the CDs and my own mixes for travel or walking.

I do the same. At times, I listen so much that I suffer Lightfoot burnout. Then I give it a break and do it all over again.
Lightfoot isn't the only artist I do this with, though. Simon & Garfunkel, Kris K, AKUS, too, so maybe there is hope for me.

Sure I go through periods of burnout where I break from GL, although it's usually not more than a couple of days. But considering he is much newer to me than to most of you(s) it is only logical that I wouldn't burn out as much.

When I first came on this board I believe I introduced myself as an eclectic music lover and I most definitely am. There's some crazy stuff in my music collection! :) No doubt Lightfoot is top notch and one of my favorite artists but there's a lot of other good artists too, worthy of checking out in an array of genres. I try to explore as many as I can. Matter o' fact, "discovering" Gordon has perhaps made me even more diverse and persistent in my search for good music. Kind of makes me wonder what else is out there that I just haven't come across yet.

Coincidentally I just came out of a brief burnout period and now I'm back in full swing after a couple of purchases on Amazon :)

This is a good topic, Kelly Davis. I would agree with Winter's Claw, some musicians can be overplayed. I've been listening to Gord since 1975, hearing the same songs over and over can get old, so I wait about a month before hearing him again.In the meantime I listen to other musicians like Al Stewart,his early work gets old too, I like his recent work better.

I'm a writer (part time novelist!) - and I must always have music as I write. And I have "playlists" for novels - but there is always some Gord there - and more now than ever - and yes, I'm listening to more now than ever.

And I'm now listening more than ever before - this novel needs him!!!
