I think I've heard Mac Wiseman sing it, but it wasn't slower. It was the 1st track on the entire CD. It was played on the same music note as the Gords Gold recording(A) and not the original(G). I think it was Mac Wiseman, anyway.

Anne Murray had a hit with that song, except she turned it into Did He Mention My Name. That's the first version of it I heard.

According to www.lightfoot.ca, country singer Bill Anderson did a cover of it. How far it got up the charts, I dont know.

It wasn't a hit version I was hearing. And I wasn't a child. Young yes, but not a child, actually a teenager.

My first husband used that song as one of several charms to reel me in. He used to play it for me on his guitar. Yes, slower. I gradually started to remember that he never could quite get the chords right on the title line. He kept backing up and singing the words "by the way" twice.

Sometimes I think I married his guitar, not him. He was actually quite talented and could make his guitar do everything but the dishes....

In a weird, roundabout way, my children might not exist if it hadn't been for GL. Strange to think about.
