Hershey PA 25 March 2011

Hello everyone,

We're still in PA at my niece's home but I wanted to put something up here. In a word FANTASTIC show! The venue was amazing but we forgot one thing: reservations for dinner. But the pizza was good and it was Friday in Lent but I digress...

We were in the sixth row left on Mike's side. The couple on the aisle "loved Gord forever but this is our first show". I told them he would start at 8 and I gave them the whole recent story and even gave them one joke to listen for. The lights went down at about 7:58 and he hit his first note almost spot on at 8PM EDT.

I won't tell you about his voice because we all know the story. Like has been reported before, the second set is stronger than the first. Carter is wonderful and the sound board was mixed nice and LOUD for once. They were using spotlights when folks did solos and Carter was lit up for a good percentage of the show. I didn't see anyone giving him tips or cues and he seemed to hit everything and then some. Toward the end Gord was "leaning his ear" over to him and smiling pretty big when he finished his riff.

Lizanne wrote a setlist and if no one else puts it up I'll transcribe it here. All the hits except CRT which he explained "we do every other night and this isn't that night" he talked about his hearing problem but said we do EMR tonight and that settled them down.

After the second song someone, understandably, hollered out "where's Terry Gord?" and Gord mentioned that "I was going to talk about that in a few minutes but..." and he introduced Carter quickly. A few tunes later he explained the story in more detail. It seemed more upbeat than some earlier reports.

Sometime later in the show the same guy asked "hey Gord how about doing a tribute song for Terry?" Brief moment of silence - many of us groaned - Gord ignored him and they plowed ahead into the next tune.

Shirt joke came along as reported and my new friend was impressed. "I knew the punchline before my husband" she said at intermission. We were in the reverently quiet (during songs) section.

After the intermission things picked up about 100%, it was remarkable. More talking and a whole lot of laughing and smiling among the band. They were hitting it big time and Carter looked like he'd been doing it with them for years (I guess he has actually). A bunch of chatty song intros.. "second ex-old lady, first ex-old lady" great stuff.

There were two (2) encores and by the end of the show everyone in the band was grinning ear-to-ear and really the crowd was great - standing Os, extended applause, appropriate solo applause and the 2/3 full house was rocking.

After the second encore Gord prowled the stage, shaking some hands and laughing with the crowd. Lizanne said she had "never" seen him in such an upbeat good humor at the end of the show.

I'd give it an A+ and I had to stop our seatmates and ask "what did you think" More smiles and grins from both of them "we loved it - thanks for the history" and they were gone. Happy!

Sorry if this is spotty but I'm reporting from the basement and they're calling me for breakfast.

Peace,

Bill :)

I was wondering when the "where's Terry?" would happen..
Sounds like a terrific night Bill...enjoy your breakfast now!

Thanks for the review Bill.. does Carter use the same electric guitar Terry used? I'm still hoping I can swing a ticket to Massey in May.

Kinda curious to hear what The Wreck sounds like now :)

Thanks for the great review Bill. Maybe I should make the effort and squeeze in one more show to see Carter before I too, go Terry's way...

Thank you so much for that review, Bill. I love hearing the "happy" about the concerts. There have been several times I have been seated by people that are lifelong fans, but never saw him in concert. Most of them are truly treasures.

Bill
Thanks so much for the Hershey show review.
It was the next best thing to being there.
Sounded like a great show.
Gordon really seemed to be having a good time with the band and the audience. That's good! One on one he's just such a likable, humble, unassuming guy.
Can you post a setlist of the show when you get a chance.
I didn't see it anywhere else.

Now I'm really kicking myself for now buying tickets to the Keene show.
I do hope I get to see Gordon again.

Tim

The Wreck sounded great IMO. I'm no expert but I think his electric was a Gretsch County Gentleman or something that looked just like one. I couldn't read it from my seat.

Bill :)

I also thought the concert was quite up to par, Carter did very well considering the shoes he has to fill. I really missed the strength of Terry & noticed they had to fill in some of the gaps of the keyboard. As Gord put it - " Sir You Are A Weiner ". The "Weiner" should have been escorted out for interupting / completing the song.

That fellow who completed Ribbon of Darkness - I would just about swear & declare that it was the same guy who belted out "Oh-ver meeeee" at two of the three concerts I attended.

OK here's the setlist that Lizanne wrote in the dark, I'm feeling like we missed one but here goes:

The usher told me "two sets of 50 minutes each and a 20 minute intermission, you should be out of here by 10". We were walking out about 10:06 after two encores so he had it right!

Sweet Guinevere (since we were in PA, get it?)
Cotton Jenny
Never Too Close
14K Gold
In My Fashion
APPT
Spanish Moss medley? with
Shadows
Beautiful
Carefree Highway
Hangdog Hotel Room (gave a rendition of the words in speaking voice first)
Ribbon Of Darkness into
Sundown
The Watchman's Gone
Alberta Bound

Intermission

TWOTEF
Ringneck Loon (ultra wonderful) explained how a loon is really lonely
Don Quixote
???
Let It Ride
If Children Had Wings
IYCRMM
Restless
Baby Step Back
Early Morning Rain
Song For A Winter's Night

Encore (s)

Rainy Day People
Old Dan's Records

Excuse the spelling but the list is close if not "complete".

Bill :)

Unbeknownst to him he almost met the fighting side of me. Had to convince myself it was not worth missing the rest of the show just to punch him out. I'd like to put a lol in there but I'm not kidding. OK now I'll LOL

Hi Bill, wonderful update! and how can you top pizza? (don't answer that one:))

Yeah, no expert..or gentleman, but he's armed with a Breedlove 6 string acoustic plus ’67 Gretsch Country Gentleman.

Any pics? I wondered if you were topped in your signature pink:)

Thanks for posting the review/setlist, Bill. Sounds like it was a great show and you had a great time! Glad to hear that Gord is in good form and talkative. They probably dreaded doing the first few shows without Terry but are now settling in to a routine. LMK about the PA show in October. We'd love to meet up with you again...

thanks for asking but we also forgot the camera and I was wearing a very subtle green ensemble, flying under the radar this time. No makeup and I need a haircut too!

Thanks Val - we just got back to MD. I thought of the missing song in the shower and just logged in to add it to the list. Were you there?

Bill :)
