Hugh's Room-2014 Lightfoot Celebration-yr.12.

So, I went to the 12th annual LIGHTFOOT celebration this weekend, THE WAY WE FEEL and it was gobsmackingly amazing. Breathtaking in fact.
A Canadian musical legend onstage, his beautifully talented daughter sang a tune AND a Canadian astronaut was there and he sang too! It really was THE most epic night in 12 years. pics and videos to come..

assorted pics so far: Trent Severn onstage-Dayna Manning, Emm Gryner and Laura C.Bates. As well as Justin Rutledge speaking with Jane Harbury. David Matheson and Jason Fowler performing. Commander Chris Hadfield (Commander of the International Space Station and one awesome astronaut and person!) Daughter Lisa and me with the assorted hooligans - David Newland, Aengus Finnan, Jory Nash and Rachel Barreca. It was THE most epic night of all that has been presented. Everyone was in total agreement that it was 'out of this world!' More pics from various sources to come. It's hard to take photos while shooting video!! It was terrific to meet up with Todd from Milton too! I'm sure he has pics and comments to add!

nice of you to take all the videos and share, as always, char

i hope Aengus did his "Lightfoot" tribute song... nothing compares to his performing that gem...also, what songs did Hadfield do?

i'm not a big fan of Affair on 8th, but when Aengus first got up and sang it years ago, ya gotta hand it to him for bearing himself without a guitar crutch

i remember he confused the Back Here On Earth and Lightfoot album covers during his intro story...i think Gord missed his performance that year so glad he heard it finally

it's ironic that Gord wouldn't allow an abbreviated version of IYCRMM for the Grammys way back when, now he is guilty of doing so himself both at Hugh's and the Gentleman's club, but hey, it's his song to slice and dice as he pleases:)

great that the trio of gals did that slew of new ones! like the Bay sweater on Emm and the red frillies on Dayna...never heard Jory do Worth Believin, cool!

i got the Leafs by the Habs for ya... check out the highlights if you never caught them...best 4 Leaf goals of the year and a up there with the outdoor Classic:)

setlist was posted way up top..Chris Hadfield sang only in the Finale...

Aengus did LIGHTFOOT last year...

I think Gordon wasn't tuned up enough-so stopped IYCRMM..he had a rasp/cough during Knotty Pine..maybe a cold..

Hopefully Todd can get the videos off my discs from Saturday night...if u have any suggestions please e-mail me! (videos were deleted off the discs (thought they were saved to laptop BUT weren't!) but have not been used again. I bought a new one for Sunday night..)

The bar didn't even have the game on! Jory told me after the show that the Leafs had won..

The room was deadly silent and still as Aengus sang AFFAIR...not even the servers were moving...it was very intense, emotional and moving. Aengus couldn't see Gordon from the stage so when I later told him what Gord did he was very shocked and humbled..it was stunning...

Song for a Winter’s Night

In today’s Toronto, tribute shows, where a band or a series of artists perform materials by one famous act, are as common as Leafs jerseys. You’ll find such concerts representing a wide variety of music genres, including the one that we champion, the Canadian folk/roots scene. So, why are we running a story about a tribute show? Well, the granddaddy of these gigs in our community is called The Way We Feel, which features the music of Canadian folk legend Gordon Lightfoot. What makes the perennially sold-out, three-night event truly unique is not only its twelve-year-run, it’s that electric moment that happens on only one of the three nights, when host David Newland introduces “our next performer, Gordon Lightfoot.”

This year, Gord followed his singer-songwriter daughter Meredith Moon onto the famous Hugh’s Room stage, and after absorbing a lengthy standing ovation, he performed “Knotty Pine” from his 1983 CD, Salute. Then, he teased the audience with a verse of “If You Could Read My Mind,” took a bow, and left the show in the good hands of Artistic Director Jory Nash’s all-star cast.

Ironically, on this Sunday night in January 2014, Gordon Lightfoot might have been the second most famous name in the house. Canadian astronaut and folk-singer Chris Hadfield made his debut appearance at the series, an event which resulted in a few polite, camera-flashing, folkie mob scenes in the Hugh’s Room lobby. Hadfield graciously shook every hand, signed every autograph, and posed for every snapshot.

Of course the performances by members of the touring Canadian folk/roots scene, backed by a stellar house band, were all outstanding covers of Lightfoot songs (see the photo below for the list of artists). James Keelaghan was an easy choice to close the proceedings, and he did so with “Canadian Railroad Trilogy.” It takes a certain amount of gravitas to pull that feat off in front of the song’s composer, and Keelaghan has it in spades. Finally, Commander Hadfield joined the whole cast on stage in the singing of “Rich Man’s Spiritual.”

This was an evening Toronto music fans won’t forget any time soon, and credit is due to Jory Nash, event co-founder Aengus Finnan, David Newland and all of the other performers, who diligently studied, interpreted and performed Lightfoot’s materials.

Finally, it was heartwarming to witness the icon of Canadian folk music seeking out performers one after the other to congratulate them on their work; the smiles on the musicians’ faces afterwards were priceless. That kind of support and validation starts at the top, and examples of this grace are seen at Canadian festivals and venues daily. Maybe that is why our great scene is what it has become.

Very, very impressive and getting better and better all the time here Char.

Can't thank you enough for the wonderful work you do.

Sadly I couldn't make it to Hugh's this time. A close friend had passed away in Ottawa so I traveled there for the weekend to attend the funeral, memorial service etc.

Those Tribute shows Jory puts on at Hugh's Room sure puts spark into the after Christmas down period.

It kind of "jump starts" the season into getting on the musical train for 2014 and before we know it the Massey Hall November concerts will in our sights.

Wow.
In all the years of watching these videos from this great tribute show, I've been amazed at all the talent. But, without casting any disrespect on any of the earlier shows, this may be the best I've ever seen. I thought my favorite was Jory's "It's Worth Believin'," then, oops, no, it's Jason's "Pony Man," then, no, wait, it's Aengus' "Affair on 8th Avenue," oh, hang on, maybe it's that rockin' "Bend in the Water" - crap, I can't choose one! They were all fantastic.
I've always wished I could go to one of these shows. Then I think about being in Toronto in January and that's a bit much for this Texas gal. Hey, I have a hard time with OUR winters! But I wish now that I had braved it. That really looked like one awesome show.

And, now that I think about it, I suppose I really do know which performer was my favorite - it was that 75-year-old guy that they named the show after. :)

Re: Hugh's Room-2014 Lightfoot Celebration-yr.12.

Hey Melissa - I've gone to almost all of the shows over the 12 years and along with everyone there last weekend who also have been at or in all of the shows it really was the most awesome night of all. Poor Jory will have a very hard time topping it next year. The only reasons I go to TO in the winter is for the Lightfoot shows and even tho I hate the cold it is SO worth the transit trips and walking I do to get to them. I am really glad they weren't this weekend-it is crazy cold again. Can't wait for the 13th annual shows in January 2015~ !!

Melissa 01-26-2014 02:09 PM

Re: Hugh's Room-2014 Lightfoot Celebration-yr.12.

Well, dang, I sure wish I'd been there! To tell you the truth, I had forgotten all about it and hadn't checked this board in awhile - that'll teach me! And yes, this is one of the very few things I would brave the cold for. One of the very few others is that little event in Nov. with some shows at an old landmark concert venue up there......hmmm, now what was the name of that place???????? :)

Oh, and when I listed some of my favorite performances from Hugh's Room, I neglected to mention Jacob Moon's "Ribbon of Darkness" - holy moly - that was fantastic!
