Again another night of debating. Another night of not being able to watch my 9 o'clock shows because of it. I sooooo can't wait till this stuff is all over with.

Were they actual debates it would be loads more interesting. We'll see. I'll just be getting home at that point.

Exactly. I was disappointed to learn today that instead of a real 'Town Hall' setting (where questions are asked by those in attendance), for the "debate" tonight the 15 questions have been selected from emails. Tom Brokaw decided which ones to present.

These aren't debates. They are scripted events that will be spun to suit the self serving agendas of the media outlets promoting their own candidate of choice tomorrow morning. I am listening with one ear as I type this.

The reality is that whoever wins next month will have to make some tough choices to make over the next four years.

In the interest of full disclosure, my son (who is finishing a 15 month deployment in Iraq this month) and his wife are both officers in the U.S. Army. The military is spread too thin and the cost of this war has been estimated at $14 million dollars per hour. Check out the stats on depression and mental illness and the attrition rate. 58% of the officers from the West Point Class of 2002 did not re-enlist when their four year service obligation was met.

Along with the cost of the war, the expenditure that is crippling the economy is not high taxes, it is the spiraling cost of energy (i.e. Gasoline, Natural Gas, Electricity). Everything we buy, is shipped by truck, train, ship or plane and the added cost of fuel applies to all goods and services across the board.

I find myself speechless........almost.

I would like to thank all the earnest, hard-working volunteers who worked tirelessly on this grass-roots campaign. It is a mission that is noble. Your vision, along with your desire for a better forum, will be the foundation for a more prosperous internet in the future. I applaud YOU.

I didn't want to start a new thread for this...so funny that when I worked the polls for the primaries, there were 3 women that came in dressed like Hillary Clinton! The hair, "smart" skirt suits and all! lol I couldn't get over that -especially in a small town. Don't know if I'll be back here to work the polls on election day but am curious to see how many Sarah Palin look-alikes there'll be!

i think these campaigns, conventions, etc are borderline brainwashing...maybe we're more like non-western society than we like to think....I hope most citizens can think for themselves and I trust whoever they elect will do a good job...and I hope the new leader concentrates on the homeland, foremost and allows the UN to collectively remedy world matters...ok, can we now get back to poking fun at the candidates and each other? lol

Our leader also upholds our laws and Canada has been known to help out a few folks around the world when tyranny and terror threatened, allowing those most affected to live and prosper, thankful that we did..
Canada was sometimes being amongst the first to wade into the fray...and we still are there for those requiring our help to improve the human condition in their countries...

It sure seemed like a putdown to me from your statement:
"I will take any US President over 10 or more Canadian Prime Ministers any day"

I don't understand that you don't get that the head of other countries (Canada for example) do the same thing in their country as the U.S. President does in his..

Be a figurehead ? That's true, but....

don't forget the U.S. Supreme Court. They interpret the Constitution. The President can fill (with the approval of the Senate) vacancies that might arise during his term, but he cannot over rule their decisions.

that's a relief to know...thanks for lessening my ignorance...this board if full of useful info offered from co-members...it also here I learned that the VP becomes pres if anything should happen at the top...i assumed that it was just a temporary patch and didnt' realize they would fill out the rest of an entire term...maybe, another election would be the way to go but with minimal campaigning...ie. wham bam, thank you, Uncle Sam

thanks for sharing that personal story, Pam...thank goodness he came to in time! btw, dad and bro are tall, but neither in any war and their idea of combat is an arm wrestle over a beer

btw, I also a bit perplexed by the President being the only one being able to oversee the US Constitution and that's why you would take any one of them vs 10 or a single PM or Canada or Great Britain, I assume.... anyhow, even with my shortcomings I did realize neither a PM nor any Canuck can oversee the US Constitution, it probably even goes without saying

char, amazing still to me that most Canadians know more about US history than their own nation's ...and probably fair to assume that Americans know little or nil of Canada's glorious (the not so glorious part also:)) history...I think what's promising is that North Americans are far less ignorant to world matters than ever before

I still don't understand the drawn out campaigning...can't folks do a comparison of each party's stances on issues over a weekend of reading and reflection? as far as a leader's character and appeal, I know if I like someone within 30 seconds of hearing and looking at them...actually, if I were to spend 5 hours on a golf course with the folks I've come to unavoidably know, I would choose Palin, Biden and McCain (not John, the bubbly, blogging daughter)

btw, witty line by Marty Short the other night on Dave...he said, McCain is so old that the only time he doesn't have to pee is when he is peeing" ...lol

These two beautiful countries have so much in common with eachother that we should focus on that. Look at all the friends we have made on this group from Canada, US and all over the world. The US and Canada are beacons of freedom. I am sure proud that we are neighbors.

I think podunklander's choice of the word "preside" might imply a President's power to control the Constitution. The exact opposite is true......The Constitution controls the President.

Heck, maybe I COULD be President. It would be like being married.

I was ready for all this political nonsense to be done & over with BEFORE it even got started in the first place. And it isn't just because it totally screws with my television viewing either.
