Massey Hall 2008-Pub Jam - Video clips for your enjoyment
...this time tomorrow we might all be packed and gone
we turn the page on yet another Massey gathering...looking forward pics from all unfortunately my battery power ran out early in the session (Char states that tardiness and unpreparedness is my new MO) , but it meant I got put the digi-gear aside, sit back and actually enjoy the John, Ron, Paul1, Paul2, TJ vibes for a change - my distant mic didnt pick up all the great lead licks, wonderful stuff, humbling thanks for pulling the jam together Ron, it is appreciated...+ tre-thanks, Char! |
Re: Pub Jam - Video clips for your enjoyment

*don't click on the play arrow in the middle of the video box in this post *instead, click on the yellow title at the top (ie. YouTube - Massey 2008 - Friday Pub Jam Montage) and it will take you to youtube site *then below the bottom right of the video screen, under where it shows the number of views, click on 'watch in high quality' you will notice the improvement in audio and video quality - you can also try viewing in full screen mode and experience less pixel loss, try it out also, can try that for the 3 part 2006 jam if you missed it ( http://www.youtube.com/profile_videos?user=opus62 )...it's jerky hand held stuff but clear 'myk' audio and great gl stage pics from an un-named source! char, grey? ok, as the rocket would say '2 minutes for lookin so good':) |

Re: Pub Jam - Video clips for your enjoyment
Thanks again to all. I would love to move to Canada! I've always known Canadian men are HOT! Gordon Lightfoot is a prime example. Do they make men like that anymore? Sorry American men. Gord is a tough act to follow!

Re: Pub Jam - Video clips for your enjoyment

anyhow, thanks to char, here's a pic that i can store in my digi-archives and i've uncharacteristically posted it as is, totally unedited...with the exception of red eye, crow's feet, mid-life acne, double chin removal and hairline plus madonna-esque mole restoration:) frankly, even in a distant musical past i've never been a front man nor relished the thought of it, i was up there merely representing the closet guitar noodlers and crooners (such as lori, donnie, val and probably a whole whack of others) as kind, flattering and totally over the top as char and ron's words have been, in reality, i just spun a simple jj version of very simple gl rarity tune and hope it left any folks who didn't know the various songbook additions on a mission to go home and dig out THE gord version, a real gem reminding us of how the master could have seemingly, effortlessly churn out a short infectious diddy, and yet, put it on the backburner when it comes to album song selection ...you'll still be needing me (jj interpretive subtext: we only attempt to hurt the ones we truly love), check it out sometime...and ron, please add it to your extensive busking catalogue sometime:) anyhow, even though i truly dread the stage, it was as good a time as any try contribute for change, (in a Lightfoot Idol Gives Back fashion, lol) after many years of being treated to stellar cover arrangements i've had the pleasure of absorbing either live or via my video edit monitor, by the genuinely talented performers and singin, pickin and lead lickin talents that exist amongst the gl crowd, including our founding fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters: mjoe, ccowette, wfrancis, emullen, kwallace, mcarl ,dkidd, etc, etc, and in no particular order (ok, in beauty order i suppose, no offense derek!;) ) ...rjones, jstinson, pbartlett, tg, paul, you guys are my latest mentors! and to wind down this windbag post, i wanted to add that before my mind went regretfully blank at the stage mic, i had primarily intended to propose a toast to a lost, true blue longtime fan (perhaps THE original gord fan) whose front row Massey seat probably should have been left vacant for the 4 nights, in memorium ...ron had previously posted that Lynn used to wear a Lightfoot Forever! button...i had truly meant to pause and raise a pint or a shirley temple and have us collaborate on a unified shout out in her honour at the jam : Ackerman Forever! on a lighter note, thanks again for making the jam happen, ron...it may appear so but people do not take for granted the efforts of the rons, chars, jenneys, debs, waynes, vals (please forgive all my omissions) whether it be a fan convention or a gord website effort... thank you, thank you, folks:) Massey regrets, i've had a few, but then again, too many to mention...but looking back, i do not regret my brief stage cameo, it was finally 'time to sink or swim'...and thanks to the receptive warmth of the corfidian on lookers, i managed to dog paddle my way through perhaps the longest 2.5 minutes of my life...excluding my wedding night cheers, cu all in 2009, the gord lord willing jj ps) tip: if ever intimidated by onlookers, take a tip from an old brady bunch episode and imagine the crowd all in their underwear...truth is, by the end of the jam, charlene actually WAS! :p |
Re: Pub Jam - Video clips for your enjoyment
Bravo jj, you look a bit like a young Gordon Lightfoot (hair style) Album "LIGHTFOOT" cover. I always am interested in guitars, could this be a Martin your playing ? The strings are sure shinny, same thing I noticed on Gord's guitars last year in Moncton. :)

Re: Pub Jam - Video clips for your enjoyment
A very beautiful piece of posting JJ. A Jones has been moved by a Jones. For the Lynn Ackerman part, a very kind sentiment and a big thoughtful thank you. Your song took took me by ambush and yes it will surely be part of my gig and thanks for your encouragement. I think the seed was planted when you and I had that musical moment in Scarborough a while ago. Some things remain frozen in time. RJ.

omigosh - He's actually posted a pic of himself..between that and actually seeing him onstage I might just keel over from excitement at the boys' exuberance!!
I too thought of Lynne several times over the week and certainly of Barry many times but especially when Lightfoot played Restless as he did solo at the memorial last December. They were missed. |

Re: Pub Jam - Video clips for your enjoyment
Does anyone have an email address for John? I have one more capo than I started with, and think it might be his. (It's not Ron's; he's the one who gave it to me; nor is it Paul B.'s).

Re: Pub Jam - Video clips for your enjoyment
Hi Val. If the capo doesn't belong to John it probably belongs to one of the band guys. That window ledge was the ideal place for storing accessories etc. and I scooped up everything that was left there at the end of the gig. Because I carry multiples, duplicates and you name it, I automatically assumed it was part of my stash. We'll get it to it's rightful owner eventually. RJ.

I emailed John, so we'll see what he says. I'll let you know. And no, JJ, I did not end up with two guitars. I could only wish! |
Re: Pub Jam - Video clips for your enjoyment
Are we talking SHUBB capos here ??? :)
|
Re: Pub Jam - Video clips for your enjoyment
:)
Is there any other kind? |
Re: Pub Jam - Video clips for your enjoyment
PS: It's a matter of the C1 (Original) vs the S1 (Deluxe). This is complicated by the fact that I do have one of each but I think I was only carrying one of them in the guitar case! But now you have given it away, as anybody has a 50/50 chance of getting it right! (Yes, Val, that's mine. I lost a (pick one) C1/S1).

Re: Pub Jam - Video clips for your enjoyment
When I saw that Gord was using Shubb capos I started using them as well. The two types that I use are the 2 inch ones, made for six string guitars and the 2 and a quarter inch ones which are slightly curved and are used for twelve string guitars. I have a 2 inch one "permanently" covering all strings with the exception of the low "E" strings and it's on the third fret of the 12 string guitar. I use a "Picker's Pal" capo (for convenience) on the first fret to cover the low "E" string on the 12 string which gives me the "drop D tuning" for tunes like "Early Morning Rain" etc. when played using the chords in the "D" positioning. It's actually the key of "F." The "infamous" capo in question here from what I recollect would be a six string guitar capo, or it could even be banjo capo, who knows? Now that I probably have everyone totally confused I'd better not say more but get on with this beautiful sunny day here in Vancouver, get out play a few Gord tunes.

terrific, paul, glad you got a kick out of the guys, sorry I didnt get typical crowd shot cutaways but I didn't feel like going into 'intrusive' mode and have folks ducking under tables to escape the lens!
unfortunately no pic of Val's GL guitar (how does that differ from say, Ron's D18?) or the sound it produced when Ron gave it a whirl - also other soothing and clever performances took place such as Ron's Stompin Tom > DQ Lightfoot segue/arrangement...I thought he was gonna pull the boot stompin board out, ha here is a shot one very cool photographer/fan pic taken from outside plus perhaps my fave pic from Lori with a great moment, I gave it a mild tweaking but it stands on it's own...John and the gang all look terrific and in the Massey spirit, cheers |

http://www.gordonlightfoot.com/jpgs/...loseup-500.jpg
http://gordonlightfoot.com/jpgs/D-18GLautograph-500.jpg The first is the best of the two pictures my husband took. Unfortunately, I had filled up memory, so that's all he could take. The second is a picture I took when I got back to my room at the hotel. As far as how the guitar differs from a stock D-18 of any vintage, it's a limited edition made with Quilted Mahogany and Englemann spruce. As with any guitar of any vintage, each one is different, but I think I was very lucky with my D-18GL getting one that good guitar players rave about. It even sounds good when I simply run my fingers across the strings, and that's saying a lot. The top grain is very tight, often an indicator of good sound (it is, of course, an indicator of a very old tree). Dick Boak, at Martin, said that I was very lucky to get such a beautiful and good sounding guitar and this was when it was brand new. It has been played by Terry Clements (back in 2002), and David Mallett (in 2003). Both loved it. And, now it has been touched (but not played) by Gord himself. The second picture illustrates another way my guitar differs from a stock D-18. Smile, please. Gord picked the spot; very clever don't you think? He specifically said, "I don't want to sign it on the top", and chose a spot where it wouldn't be rubbed out either when played or while in the case. For more about the guitar, read the article at my web site: http://gordonlightfoot.com/MartinD-18GL.shtml and follow the link to the Sounding Board article at the Martin Guitar web site. |
Re: Pub Jam - Video clips for your enjoyment
When I saw Val and husband John coming into the pub, hard shell guitar case in tow, I knew it was the guitar that would eventually come into my hands, and that it did. It was the moment I was waiting for. I took note that Val was very observant of each and every move of that instrument as I greeted them and the guitar was nestled away in a corner until the magic moment came. And come it did when she handed the guitar to me and I practically went legless. A feeling sort of like child seeing the genie appear after the lamp was rubbed. "Here I Am!" Just running a fingernail across the strings would make the bones in the skull vibrate. Could it get any better than this? That was the icing on the cake for me that's for sure. I promised Val that I would be gentle with her guitar so carefully finding our comfort zone we chose "Home From The Forest" as our number. Well let me tell you that before that song was complete I am convinced I saw "Red pines bow their heads" and branches of the "Knotty pine bend beneath the snow." Such a beautiful instrument. It was all very overwhelming, and I sometimes wonder why life seems to be getting so much better when at this late age I'm no longer "coming in?" But it's actually happening; it's never been this good. As Gord says in his song "Seven Island Suite:" Any Man in his Right Mind Could Not Fail to Be Aware." RJ.
