Recently a young artist named Daniel Powter had a big #1 hit with a song called "Bad Day". Well that should've been my ultimate theme today!
Starting last night when I went into my closet to get out a vinyl LP (so frustrated I don't recall which)and discovered there had been water seepage into my closet and into the rug under the records! Making this a short story,I have now lost 133 albums to water damage! Not just any ole' albums either! (No,I keep Gordon seperate thank heaven's!) Get this: 8 Elton John / 7 out of 8 Jackson Browne /7 Neil Diamond and 2 & 3 of other acts to numerous to type out. ( 3 mushy Credence Clearwater's anyone?) I've lost 21 acts listed under "B" and 20 under "C"! Unfortunately,no renters insurance. :( I think the more personal loss aside from my time & money are the one's I've had since the 80s. Most especially one's my Mother or Grandmother got as presents on X-mas or my birthday. Well,on top of that we ask the folks in the office to send a maintenance man who should have been there by three and he doesn't show until 5pm! I sat all day watching the mostboring daytime TV imaginable! Even Springer,& I hate him. Now,I've gone & picked up my check but am stuck here becasue over the course of the day a huge storm has developed and it's now pouring. Making me wonder if I'll get to even cash my check to buy dinner! Okay....can "anyone" top that? Just felt like sounding off, thanks for reading. |
Sorry about the loss of music Borderstone :(
heartbreaking to lose things that have so much sentimental value, no putting a price on that... |
oh-that sucks big time B...
the saving grace is your Gord stuff is okay...keep thinking positive thoughts of that... sheesh..it's been quite a day .... Char |
133 albums?? I'd be angry as you-don't-wanna-know-what if that happened to me! Hate to hear about that, Border-dude. :( But at least you didn't lose your GL collection.
|
Yes, thank goodness GL is safe. That doesn't make up for the rest that you lost though.
Good thing you have lots of music stores in the area, maybe you could find replacements. Poor, Poor B. So sorry. |
Whoa B,
I hope today is better fot you. I know how you're feeling. When I moved from my last apartment into our first house I too lost 90% of my vinyl to an undetected slow leak from the owner's kitchen above our apartment. The covers had been soaking up the water for a right long while. We only noticed it when a friend attempted to pack 'em up and they proceeded to fall apart, I mean they were really, really wet. And they were lined up along the wall in the living room, they acted just like a sponge and we never noticed it... This too shall pass Rainy Day People... Bill :) |
B, are the records themselves warped or is it mostly the covers? Vinyl albums can be washed (85% distilled water, 15% isopropyl alcohol or distilled water with a little mild detergent) then dried with a soft cloth in a circular motion working from the inside out. Whatever you do, do it fast, before mold and mildew have a chance to grow.
If there's a large university nearby see if someone in the library's archival department might have suggestions. They have to have disaster plans for just such occasions and may have information on how to recover some of your damaged albums. There are also specialists in this area but I have no idea of the $$ expense. Here's one (Document Reprocessors): Call 1-800-4DRYING (1-800-437-9464) We are the nation's leading experts when it comes to salvaging and restoring water-damaged books, photographs and materials. They *may* also do vinyl albums, in a freeze drying vacuum chamber. Give them a call to see; if not, they may be able to recommend someone local to you, or give you suggestions. Also, I found a "how-to" in a library disaster plan:
Record Albums (Vinyl, Shellac, and Acetate Disks) Priority Dry within 48 hours. Freezing is untested; if there are not options, freeze at above 0 degrees F. Handling Precautions Hold disks by their edges. Avoid shocks. Packing Methods Pack vertically in padded plastic crates. Preparation for Drying Remove the disks from their sleeves and jackets. If labels have separated, mark label information on the center of the disk with a grease pencil and keep track of the label. Separate shellac, acetate, and vinyl disks. If dirt has been deposited on the disks, they may be washed in a 1 percent solution of Kodak Photo Flo in distilled water. Each disk media should be washed in it own container (i.e., do not wash shellac disks with vinyl disks). Rinse each disk thoroughly with distilled water. Drying Methods Jackets, sleeves, and labels may be air dried like other paper materials. See Sections: Paper: Coated and Paper: Uncoated, as appropriate. Air dry disks vertically in a rack that allows for the free circulation of air. Dry slowly at ambient temperature away from direct heat and sources of dust. Hi all. :) Yes,I'm in a better mood today. Not 100% over it but getting there. Thanks for the info Annie but sad to say, they are a lost cause.
Best example here,a Todd Rundgren Lp was soaked top to bottom and was stuck to a Jefferson Starship LP in the same condition. Tried to seperate them and they came apart like a moist cake! Ugh! Not to mention most had developing green mold and a black dirt-like substance on them. One Clapton LP (1978's "Backless") could've been wrung out like a wash rag! Let's just say my closet was a very mini-Katrina. The water from outdoor sprinklers came in under the wall,so I don't know how long these had ben like this. That's what comes of working too many days,I guess. Well, once I start work Monday,I'll slowly find them all again because I made a complete list of all of them. (I nearly cried writing it.) :( Some I might never find again because I just "happened" upon them. Anyhow, thanks for your thoughts and sympathetic words everyone. :) I'm just glad I still have the remaining 500 +. (No,that's not a joke). ;) I guess in life you take the bad w/ the good. I got a good new job. I had a "bad" experience with this. I guess, that's life. [ June 08, 2006, 16:10: Message edited by: Borderstone ] |
My first thought was are any of the more valuable ones (to you and your memories)
cleanable enough to actually play?? Because with your well publicised skills you could make cassette versions. Later when your new job takes you out of the poverty stricken class and you have got your new computer, with a little help from your friends you could learn to convert whatever is playable into CDs to play in your new car whilst driving up to the next soiree at "Madame Brinks"!! I thought of you when I was studying a special offer just last week in our local Office Depot circular, which had a well specced HP Pavilion http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/2...ltaxza21fu.jpg that after rebates was a mere $199.99 with:- AMD Sempron Processor 3200+ 15" LCD All-In-One Printer 256MB Memory 80GB Hard Drive Burn & Play CDs (i.e A CD-RW Burner) FREE HP 1410 All-In-One Printer OR Upgrade to the Model 1610 All-In-One for $49 more Configuration Code 03015140 Upgrade to: 512MB of RAM add $50 CR-RW & DVD-RW Combo Drive add $25 9-in-1 Memory Card Reader add $15 160GB Hard Drive add $50 Note that it included a 15" LCD monitor (not too shabby at that price) and a basic HP all-in-one (Copier / printer / scanner not too shabby either) http://www.fotojola.pl/hp%201410.jpg Any cheaper they'll be "giving them away with the tequila"!!!(Pat Boone) The same circular had a half-decent LG external (i.e. USB) DVD Burner for only $39.99 (only a couple of years ago the cheapest DVD Burner I could find was over $200 JohnFowles (I have no connection with Office or Home Depots and the offers have expired [ June 08, 2006, 17:08: Message edited by: johnfowles ] |
From now on, try doing like me. I usually keep most of my albums in one of my chester drawers. They run a slightly higher risk of getting banged up if you're not careful when opening and shutting it, but I'm pretty sure I won't have to worry about any water damage. ;)
|
Poverty stricken? Gosh sakes John I'm not a member of the Evans family on "Good Times"!
I have my financial difficulties but I'm anything but that! Sheesh! I haven't even been thinking about more modern technologies as far as music goes. I enjoy "the hunt" for old records & tapes and I shall reclaim as much of these "lost" LPs as I can. Things like downloading,eye-pods,& that other way I can't recall the name of :D ,just aren't a factor just now and I don't know if they ever will be. If I decide to,I could only imagine it's a long way off. |
"Hammer-time!" :D LOL! Sorry Misty, couldn't resist that one! LOL!!
Anyhow,I like music in any "hand-held" form. That meanng I can buy it myself and own it. I just don't feel that downloading & I-pods are the same thing. Yes,the music is there but somehow without an album and/or cd cover with the artist on it,it seems such an empty distant sort of thing. Like there's now a larger gap between you and the artist in question. CD,cassettes,LP's & even 45rpm covers give a personality and a picture of who you're listening too. You can't get that from a self-recorded CD-Rom or a little box on your haed. --------- Anyway, good news here. :) I have begun the process of replacement for my LPs. Yesterday,I recovered Jackson Browne:"Late For The Sky","Hold Out" and "Lawyers In Love". Neil D.:"12 greatest Pt. 2 and "Stones". ..and "Linda Ronstadt:Greatest Hits Pt. 1". ;) 6 down...oh so many to go! LOL! :D Nice that I can laugh now. I threw the old ones out last night, only to find out one of my neigbors dug them out of the dumpster! Eeeeeewwwwww!!! |

A little update on my retreival of lost LP's.
Progress report: All together I've so far reclaimed over 30 of the lost discs,as well a getting them with good to near pefect covers. bBest news of all,I have all of my Jackson Browne LP's back,as of yeaterday! :D Yaaaaay!!! I'm here at the library downtown w/ my god-daughter who thinks my losing 133 records is hilarious, especially since they got mushy!  She's 11 going on 2 er....er...er!!! 12,I mean 12! LOL! :D She says hi and that Gl is ! That's just her opiniion. |
Borderstone - sorry to hear all you've been thru; and I'm glad its on the mend. I'd have a cow if all that happened to my vinyl. Sure glad your GL is intact. Hope your check got cashed OK :) Sympathy-

Remember Borderstone, ya need to do a better job storing your music. If I've told you once, I've told you a thousand, thousand times.

Heck Fading, they still haven't fixed my closet! ...and it's been two months already!
Unfortunatley, the place changed hands (*A-gain!*)last month, and they haven't got their heads screwed on straight yet! The ninnies! :D |
Glad to see you back B! We miss you since you have changed jobs. How is the new one going? Hope you still like it.

Re: "You have a bad day!"
Hey guys! :) I was just reminded about this topic when I went
record hunting today. (12/20/07) Don't worry,my Christmas shopping is finished. ;) I bought CCR's "Green River",in as good a shape as the one I lost and that reminded me of my wet CCR records comment. Just to update you on the progress of album retrieval,I'm now down to about 75 albums to go. I'd probably be done by now but I want to get copies as good as the one's I had. Also, the first 1/2 of this year was not very good for me $$-wise,as well a job-wise. I have a great job now and am excelling at it. :) :) This has now allowed me to re-start my search. Hard to believe it's already been a year & half since "the great flood"! LOL! |
Re: "You have a bad day!"
Hey B. You've had a bad day? Try having a bad three weeks like I've had. First off, my cat Pup disappeared around the first of this month, and second, I had to take his litter mate to the vet as he was limping due to an infested fight bite. Now I have to get up at some crazy hours in order to walk the little booger for about half an hour, and then I have to try & catch up on my lost sleep all day long. I'll be glad when the cat Pete gets well enough to be let off his leash so that I can get back to a normal sleep pattern. however, when compared to the loss of the music that you had, I'd say tah that was a damn bad deal there.

Re: "You have a bad day!"
Dear Borderstone:
If you have trouble finding any of your lost albums, let us know which ones, so we can all keep an eye out for them at our local used record stores... there are several here in the Los Angeles area. |
Re: "You have a bad day!"
Go Pam,
Glad to hear you were working at Macy's for the holiday season. What luck that you can put that $$$ on a TicketMaster card. :) Happy holidays and I look forward to seeing you during GordQuest 2008. DSR |

Re: "You have a bad day!"
Hey all,I'm finally back. :) Happy New Year to you.
Sorry to hear about your bad day T.T. ,it's frustrating when good days go bad. Just a day or so before I left that message things were great, new job pending & kissed the old one good-bye. Then to find 133 sloshy,moldy-mildewed LPs out of my 600+ and the complex owners doing little to help well...aaaarrrrrgh! Thanks for the offer Kathy,if the search gets too difficult I'll certianly let you know. :) Thankfully a lot of these albums are one's you can find easy. Like "Guilty"-Barbra Streisand & Barry Gibb, pawnshops,Goodwill, used record stores....that one was a snap. ;) Yesterday,I got Elvis Aloha From Hawaii back & a Madonna album. Making 72 down and 61 to go. Before spring,I want to be below 50 and finished before the two year June 8th date. |
Re: "You have a bad day!"
Well, Pete's better now & Pup STILL hasn't come back, so I'm going to assume the best on that one. Right now, it's in the mid-60's & the humidity level is such that it actually seems muggy. But it's still better than it has been in a while for me, on an emotional level.

Re: "You have a bad day!"
BIG update! :) As of last night......40 to go!! ;) Yaaaaaay!!
|
Re: "You have a bad day!"
Okay, this will be attempt #2 at posting this.
Now the title of this thread is "You Have a Bad Day" right? Well today is quite the opposite! :) This has actually been kind of a "lucky" day, here's why. 1. First bus took the coin & bill box wasn't working, that ride was free. 2. Second bus: Said "Halo" to the driver (instead of hello). She found it funny and gaver me a bus pass for $1 off. Same bus, found 50cents on a seat,so my ride to the record store was only a buck! :) 3. Got to the store called "Bookmans" which seels used music, books & other things. I grabbed 6,count 'em! ; 6 of the albums I needed. That's not the best part though, when I got to the regster, the cashier informed me after tallying everything that i had just won their "in store' contest and that my merchandise would be "FREE!" It even says so on the the receipt! So,what would have easily cost me $20,didn't. :) Here's what I got : "Close Up" - Frankie Valli (1975) w/ #1 hit "My Eyes Adored You". "Calypso" - Harry Belafonte (1957 & in perfect shape) "The Hermit Of Mink Hollow" - Todd Rundgren "Voices In The Sky" - The Moody Blues (A 1980s "best of" collection) On cassette: "Hysteria" - Def Leppard (1987/88) "Dr. Feelgood" - Motley Crue I also bought one 45rpm from 1988 by a group called Bourgeois Tagg (Bush-wah Tahg),their 1988 hit called "I Don't Mind At All". Free stuff? No...I Don't Mind At All! LOL! Anyhow, that takes me down to 30 albums (I got my last Elton John back last night too and before that Elton's "The Fox", Chicago 16 & an 80s group called Breathe). Oh,almost forgot #4.... I got this PC right away when I swiped my card. ;) |
Re: "You have a bad day!"
Geez, I'd say you had the "free stuff" angel on your shoulder today!
Isn't it weird how things happen like that? Makes you wonder.... Moody Blues "Voices In The Ssy"....that's a good one! I am happy for you that you had such a good day. Hopefully you will get those last 32 albums soon. |
Re: "You have a bad day!"
Yes I did Nightengale. (Love that name by the way!) :)
Just a good day all around and you may notice in my above message I made a correction. I forgot about 3 other albums I bought last week,so it is 30. ;) Which means since this "accident" happened,I've gotten back 103 with Todd Rundgren's putting me over the 100 mark. I won't finish them by June 6th which is the 2 year anni. date but it wont be long after that. Yes,the Moody's album is a good one,it's mainly a "best of" the 1970s to 1983. The actual Moody Blues album I lost was 1983's "The Present" but "Voices In The Sky" had the hit from that LP so I got that instead. In regards to the final 30,if anyoine out there sees a copy of "A Boy Named Charlei Brown" movie soundtrack, let me know! :) |
Re: "You have a bad day!"
Thanks for the compliment on my name.
It actually came about from the "Voices in the Sky" song and "On the Wings of a Nightingale" by the Everly Brothers. Justin Haywarad sings to a nightingale in the "Voices" song...it's such a beautiful tune and one of my favorites. The Everly Brothers song used to wake me up every morning when my alarm clock radio would go off...lol. It was kind of a difficult time in life and I appreciated that song more than I can ever say. It would just start my day off right and give me inspiration and hope...it's a great song! I will keep an eye out for the Charlie Brown soundtrack. Good luck on the rest of them too. |
Re: "You have a bad day!"
Hey B -what are the 30 you need..

Not sure what CCR I have - I'll check.. I know my friend doesn't have any of these you listed.. |
Re: "You have a bad day!"
Awwww c'mon! Gimmie yer Rita C. !!!
Actually I've seen a copy or two of Rita but just like the Joe Walsh's I've seen, their condition is crummy. I had a feeling they wouldn't have most of those either but y'never know. Thank you much! :) |
Re: "You have a bad day!"
Hi all, latest update from the Lost LPs file.
With a little help on the birthday side,I have these back now : The George Benson Collection - Vinyl Shirley Brown - Woman To Woman ( CD ) Night Ranger - 7 Wishes Vinyl and ....da da ta da ta da! "A Boy Named Charlie Brown" ( CD ) :) B-day. 22 to go. |
Re: "You have a bad day!"
Well,I hate to post this during the same time as the passing of Paul Newman but I had just come home from record hunting when I heard the news. :(
I'll be brief as possible. In my last post, you'll see that I had 22 to go just over 3 months ago. As of yesterday,I am now down to the final 10! 1. "Alley Cat" - Bent Fabric ( I know where one is for a good price!) ;) 2. "Lie To Me" - Brook Benton ( Found the other but still seeking this one.) 3. "British Rock Classics" Vol. 1 - Various (Haven't seen it). 4. "Bugsy Malone" Soundtrack (I know where to get one but they want $20!!) 5. "Enlightenment: Best Of Lou Christie" (No sign of it). 6. "One Step Closer" - Gavin Christopher (If I can't find the LP,maybe I'll just substitute the same named hit 45rpm.) 7. "Love Makes The World Go Around" - Perry Como (Same place that wants $20 for "B.M." wants just over $10 for this.) 8. "Big Bad John" - Jimmy Dean (Same place as "Alley Cat",good price too. Next week possibly) 9. "The Shirelles Anthology". (Not seen either. I've seen other collections but they don't have all the hits. ) 10. "The Very Best of Ray Stevens". (Seen other collections but again, not all the hits are there. ) Well, hopefully by next posting here,I'l be down to 5! I hope to have them all before the year is over. See you guys later! ;) |
Re: "You have a bad day!"
Big news alert! Big news alert!! :)
You know it seems like a small eternity since I posted about losing all the albums that I did in my closet flood of June 2006 but,I've something great to report about it today.... As of yesterday and also help from 2 weeks ago,I am now "1" - I repeat One! albuma away from being finished!! I recently bought,2 weeks ago,The BugsyMalone Soundtrack,Alley Cat by Bent Fabirc and Get The Best Of Ray Stevens. Yesterday was a biggie : The Best Of Lou Christie,"Love Makes The World Go Around" - Perry Como and a Brook Benton "Best Of" part two that has the same songs as the LP I listed,so I bought that instead. Along with other LPs over the past two months as well. I just need that pesky Gavin Christopher and his one hit wonder LP "One Step Closer". If I can't find the Lp,I'll just find that hit single and be done with it. ;) I'll keep you guys posted and thank you for your wanting to help and you're intrest. :) |
