On October 29, 1941, U.K. Prime Minister Winston Churchill visited Harrow School to to hear the traditional songs he had sung there as a youth, as well as to speak to the students. This became one of his most quoted speeches, due to distortions that evolved about what he said.

The myth is that Churchill stood before the students and said, "Never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, give up. Never give up. Never give up. Never give up." Then he sat down.

In reality, he made a complete speech that included words similar to what are often quoted. Here is what he said close to the end of his speech. These are words to live by.

"Never give in. Never give in. Never, never, never, never--in nothing, great or small, large or petty--never give in, except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force. Never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy."

It was one of my father's favorite phrases. The older I get, the more I take it to heart.

I figure the latest two favorites are those ones from Itzack Pearlman (sp) right after he broke the fiddle's high string broke. He looked at the conductor and said, "Resume."

And, quieting the audience, after the thrilling 3 string performance he said, "Sometimes it is the role of the artist to make the most music you can with what you have left."

Nice to see Winstone quoted here. One of my favourite Churchill quotes involves his old parliamentary sparring partner Lady Astor Whilst at a social gathering, Lady L said to Churchill "Winston, you are drunk." Churchill's response was, "Madam, you are ugly, but in the the morning will shall be sober."

A classic.

My favourite Oscar Wilde quote, "There is only one thing worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about."

During the 2nd WW soon after D Day, she stood up in the British parliament made a speech during which she made an ill considered remark, referring to the troops fighting in Italy as D-Day dodgers. Needless to say this did not go down too well with said troops. To the degree that they wrote some words that they sang to the tune of Lili Marlene.

Actually, Dan Ackroyd said it in response to Jane Curtin's remarks. And Roseanne Roseannadanna was played by Gilda Radner. But, I expect most people here already know that.

Favorite Quote?

Not sure, but Most Memorable? How 'bout that. Actually, there are two:

Leon used to say those alot. I guess that's why they're memorable, although I don't have much of a clue beyond that.
