I just bought the JAWS dvd & can't wait to see it again! Who would Gordon most likely be on the Orca...Sheriff Brody? Hooper?? or Capt Quint???

loveandmaplesyrup 07-15-2000 04:34 AM

Tom,
I don't see Gord in "Jaws" But I DO see him in "Orca the Killer Whale" as the part that Richard Harris played.

But no self-respecting Orca would hurt Gord.

Whoa, Tom, now you're opening a whole can of worms. Shall we talk about JONAH and the whale?

Okay, I apologize. "Orca" was one of my favorite films and Richard Harris is one of my favorite actors. But I REALLY do believe Gord could have played that part as well or better than Richard. After "Dances With Wolves" and "In Pursuit of Honor", "Orca, the Killer Whale" was my THIRD FAVORITE FILM. And I could REALLY picture Gord in the leading role.

Sorry to talk about a different film. Am I forgiven?

Stay loose, eh?

To redeem myself,
I think Gord could have been "Captain Quint." I loved his line about the time that his friends were in the water and he was describing what the shark looked like when it bit someone. "... His eyes just got dark and he ..." You know that scene on the boat where they were waiting for the shark and they heard the whales singing???? he talked about being in the water and he pushed his friend over in the water and there was nothing from the waist down because the sharks ate it. He was telling that story. I really CAN picture Gord in that scene.

Gives you the "willies", doesn't it?

Sorry about the "Orca" thing.

http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gifI initially thought Gordon would be Captain Quint, no question. When I posed the question to my wife she answered "Hooper" without hesitation. After watching it again, I think I agree. Gordon would definitely not be Chief Brody...he was afraid of the ocean and was the big-time family man. Gordon says in Songbook of his 1st marriage: "I didn't act the role of the doting, guitar-toting, singing father figure." Quint was too much of a loner to be like Gordon, as you can tell from his songs Gord's a "people-person" someone who cares deeply about relationships.
Matt Hooper was the smart oceanographer who was more interested in learning about the Great White instead of killing it. He had lots of class(i.e. The scene at Brody's house where he wanted to let the wine "breath"...like the elegant Gord pictured on "East of Midnight")lots of money(i.e. Hooper's expensive Hi-Tech boat...Gord was a millionaire in 1970 from his Warner contract!)plus he's got the beard! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif

The oceans of the world were the home of Big Blue/He was the greatest monster that the world ever knew...His mouth was as large as a tunnel so they say/His hide was thick as leather and his eyes quick and small/And his back was all scarred by the times he got away...

To clear up one thing...I wrote a post after LAMS about "Farewell and adieu....." That was the song that Qunit sang when they talked about bringing a "shark cage" into the water. Remember????

There was some method to this madness...Now as to Char's post about "99 bottles of beer on the wall", I think she drank 'em before she made that post...

Like Wes, there was a reason for the ditty I posted. In Jaws, this is the song that Hooper began to sing after having a few too many drinks. It was the first time he showed some personality outside of the stiff expert oceanographer image he was trying so hard to emit. On the other hand, Brody needed the numerous belts to calm his nerves from being off land. I can't remember if at this time cap'n Quint was with them- I think not, though.

Wes Steele 07-17-2000 11:36 AM

I give you, though, that beer tastes best out of a bottle (over a can, that is...i maintain that beer tastes best in a glass).

loveandmaplesyrup 07-18-2000 12:02 AM

Tom,
On a more serious note, I kind of disagree with you. Yes, Gord is a family man and he does love his children, but he's definitely NOT the "Brady Bunch" kind of family man. And yes, he was and is a millionaire, but that has never changed him in any way.

I think he is EXACTLY like Quint. You commented that you don't see him as a loner like that. That is really how I see him. I could easily picture him in that same scenario and lifestyle as Quint. I can hear Quint's words coming out of his mouth. He could be that cynical. He could build that big wall around himself and he could very well be that crusty. I just don't see him as the "yuppie" Hooper. Yes, Gord had a very beautiful sailboat, but it was NOT to "show off". It was because he LOVED sailing and still probably does. He sold the boat because he didn't have time for it anymore. Hooper actually aggravated me.

But, please don't take offense by my disagreeing with you or your wife. Perhaps I just see Gord a little differently than you. It doesn't mean either one of us are right or wrong. I am actually kind of enjoying this discussion. Hope you are, too.

I also hope I didn't offend you or make you angry.

LAMS,
I am enjoying this discussion too(except it's making me want to drink a cold "Bass" http://www.corfid.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif in a glass!)lol I take your point, like I said my 1st thought was "Quint" too! I can see Gordon at that Town Meeting scratching his nails on the chalkboard to get everyones attention and then singing "Sit Down Young Stranger" or something. That is what Gordon would do...come out with some great song to grab everyones attention(i.e. "Black Day in July" or "Edmund Fitzgerald") in an intelligent way. Maybe this IS a dumb question - I guess an argument could be made for all three roles. http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif

On the topic of Gord's saddest song .... My vote is for "Now and Then."

I've been trying to write a difficult scene today and I put on Gord to get a cure for the old "writer's block". This song just HIT me like a ton of bricks:

"I think this time, you've said enough
to make me want to make me want leave this place
Still I keep coming back for more of the same
To fan the dying flame.

Here inside these walls
That seem to move a little closer everyday
There must be a way out of this crazy game
We play out to the end.
Let us just pretend awhile...
Think about the good things now and then.

I think this time ...
That was the best time that we two have ever known
We tried the handle of the house upon the shore
Found the open door.
Once inside we found a curious moonbeam
doing dances on the floor.

We were only playing like two children
who had stayed away from school.
Two of us could not be wrong.
Heaven knows who keeps the Golden Rule.

I think this time, we've learned enough
To know that nothing is the same.
Still the pounding of my heart is unchanged...
Leaving's so strange.
Here among my thoughts of you
I find a gentle longing to be free.
There must be a way out of this crazy game
We play out to the end.
Take away the in-between.
Think about the good things now and then.

We will see the day when you or I wil stay
or face up to the end.
Let us just pretend awhile.
Think about the good things now and then.

For me, at least, that song just about says it all.

Stay loose, eh?

I bought JAWS 7/14/2000 and was finally able to finish watching it last night. After viewing again in its entirety, I'll stick with Hooper. Here me out...

I don't see Gordon as so crusty. Captain Quint was very arrogant & uncivil. He was very rude to Hooper, and this flaw caused great danger to everyone on board the Orca. Remember the scene where Quint is driving the engine too hard and Hooper yells at him to slow down the engine because "it can't take it". Quint finally blows the boat's engine, endangering everyone. He finally is humbled enough to let Hooper try out his anti-shark cage. Also Quint goes down with his ship in a horrible death, where Brody & Hooper survive. I think Gord has shown alot of civic harmony throughout his career & would fit better as Hooper. http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif lol

loveandmaplesyrup 07-25-2000 04:37 PM

Tom,

I agree, Gord is every bit the gentleman. HOWEVER, we're talking about a film role here. Gord could very easily play the "crusty" Quint. Gord is very nice to everyone around him, but believe me, you cross him and you see a very different man. And he says what he feels. He's outspoken to a point. He would never go off on you for no good reason, but if there's a need for it, he definitely WILL put you in your place albeit in a polite way.

Hooper was a yuppie. Gord is no way NEAR being a yuppie. I don't really think he could pull off that kind of role. I know that in the "Hotel" episode, there was a scene where he had to "shake" his son in anger and he didn't get it right. You could just tell that he was doing something totally out of his nature. He didn't pull it off at ALL. And he wouldn't be able to do Hooper either.

But I really CAN picture him in the role of Quint. Gord is stubborn like that and yeah, he could be the way Quint was. I think he'd have fun PLAYING that role.

Stay loose, eh?

Reply to loveandmaplesyrup:

I've been listening to "Now and Then", it was one of those songs I skipped over on SONGBOOK. Thanks for posting the song, it is another classic. I hear the sadness in it, but it also has a positive vibe about it.

Wes Steele 08-03-2000 06:43 AM

Hey Tom, I am glad you said that first...about "Now & Then" has some positive vibes to it...

That has always been my feelings...

I remember ending a relationship when that album came out and that song said it all.
Even my friends who were not GL fans loved that song.

I love that one line..."Here among my thoughts of you I find a gentle longing to be free...." He still has feelings for her but he wants out. There is a feeling of "unsureness". Nothing is black and white...

And also one of the most beautiful melodies...

I've joined this thread very late. Enjoyed
reading everyone's imput, especially since I
found myself smiling or laughing quite a few
times. Now, if I can remember the owner of each comment & give you my 2C.

I settled on Quint. Tom you made a lot of
good points & Maplesyrup, you touched on most
of what I would say, but since I can't remember the specifics, I'll generalize -
Foremost, Hooper is everything but humble.
I think the word "humble" has been used the
most at this site & the ng to describe Gord,
especially by people who were lucky enough to
meet him in person after a concert.
2. Both Hooper & Quint owned boats & loved the sea. Even though Hooper was concerned
about the ocean, so was Quint and I think in
a more down-to-earth way. He was more rustic,
and also had much knowledge of the sea, mostly from raw experience. Hmmmm, sounds like someone else we all know & love.
3. Quint was in that scene with the singing,
in fact he started it all. The others joined
in with their favorite sea ditty's. So Quint
was the man first to express himself through
music! And as someone pointed out, [Maplesyrup, I think. Sorry to whomever if I'm mistaken] Quint was quite the storyteller
to. Now, who would most here like to see as
subject of VH1's STORYTELLERS series? [do they still have that?]

On the side - since Hooper was the character that most appealed to me when I saw JAWS in the theatre [we are really dating ourselves
here!]my immediate inclination was to go with
Hooper, cause I'm most inclined to go with Gord in the world of music.

I was delighted when [Tom, was it] broke out
with the lyrics of the song that Quint sang in the movie. Even though I don't know that song, I knew exactly what the reference was
& then of course when [Maryanne?] followed
it with I WANT TO GO HOME. And Char, I also
was in puzzlement of where you were coming
from ;D To be honest though, I thought maybe
I forgot about that part of the movie!

Then there's the discussion over lyrics.
NOW & THEN will do just fine by me. There has
never been a time when I don't hit the "repeat" button 3-4 times for that song
to sing with Gord at the top of my lungs.
I've been less boisterous lately since the
new tenants moved in upstairs. I think they
need to get to know me first. I most like the 1st & 3rd verse - and the music[guitar
playing, mix, etc. etc] is of Gord's & "The
Guys" finest.

Well, that's about all I have to say. Of course, I'll jump in the conversation again
if I feel the need. It's been some time since
I posted here. Good to be with you all again.

Dorothea
