Is there a song, you wish Gordon Lightfoot had never done? Maybe one that he did not write? I myself can't think of one right now. Maybe "The Auctioneer"??? :)  |

But that's what makes Gord's music so much fun - there's so much good stuff to choose from. A lot of what I like or don't falls into two camps: like it every time I hear it, or, usually don't like it but if my mood is right I will find something I like in either the melody or lyrics or phrasing of even my least favorite songs. |
This is an easy one for me....

I just do NOT understand this prejudice against Canary Yellow Canoe...

It's just different tastes. Geodeticman mentioned "Hey You", but I happen to like it. RMD |
"Blackberry Wine" definetly! It kind of interrupts the otherwise great mood of the "Shadows" LP.
I think also, "Cold Hands From New York",just a bit too long. |
Canary Yellow Canoe, is getting a lot of votes, well its definitely not one of his best.
Borderstone, I saw your pic, from the past. There is a slight ressemblance to Michael Keaton. You look to me like a pretty good {bloke.} A new word I've learned this week, from Lisa's Mom... |
RMD,
that was definitely said tongue in cheek, in a teasing manner. ;) I think I'm the only person I know who likes the song, not just tolerates it. (There are plenty I do not like, but that isn't one of them...) |

is this a trick question!!! there isn't a song gord should not have done
|
Mister Rock of Ages is a song that is forgettable for me.
Borderstone I like Blackberry Wine but I somehow cringe (for lack of better word) at the way he sings the words "Blackberry Wine" in the song. |

I don't think it's a trick question. Jesse Joe used the term WISH. Canary Yellow Canoe....I wish he had never wrote it and I wish I had never heard it. There were so many other gems to choose from. RMD |

brink,
How do you know it was a joke ? cliftongord replaced WISH with SHOULD. Lightfoot SHOULD write anything he wishes. Perhaps you have greater insight than I, but I simply took the post at face value. I'm lighting up as I lighten up. RMD |

I'm with those who like CYC. If my life depended on making a decision it would have to be "a Lesson in Love".

Those days are far, far in the past for me. But even in those days, I would not have liked Canary Yellow Canoe. Mind you, this is all tongue in cheek. RMD |
I guess i should have put LOL.
I always skip GO-GO Round. |
Home from the Forest. Too sad, if I listen to it I'm ruined for the day

I knew I couldn't be the only CYC fan out here... :)
good thing we're typing and not speaking, with all this tongue in cheek, verbal communication would impossible... |

Hey don't forget I said CYC "except for the lyrics" :) I love the lyrics. The geography of rivers named, the imagery of the canoeing I always hoped for in a song by Gord, but the (almost) rock music and melody I find it hard to listen to is all. I am glad he wrote it; he's earned the right, I respect everything he wrote, It's just CYC and Hey You! are a little hard on my ears. Maybe better put that those two are my LEAST favourite - I really don't dislike any GL song; I love his music too much. Two out of hundreds still constitutes my liking his music to the 99th percentile - as good as about anything gets ! I respect your opinion LSH, and I respect all the opinions above. Stand proud with your opinion LSH :) geo Steve |

hey geo Steve
I caught that lyrics bit :) Oddly enough, I'm a lyrics person (as you know by now), but I like CYC for the feeling of letting loose, letting it go, that I find in the music (ala "to be insane beyond belief, is sometimes the best relief). I find it all somewhat amusing, since you like those hummable melodies and I like those lyrics...just goes to show you, huh? :) thank you for the respect of opinions, my sentiments exactly...those differing opinions are what make these threads so interesting... LSH and in keeping with the thread...I'd rather any of them than nothing at all as MD said, but I really could live without Miguel...or Sweet Guinevere, May I...so you probably score in a higher percentile than I do... Ok, I have to give CYC another listen. It's been awhile, and though I didn't like it the first time through, I'll give it another perspective and see if it catches on. Sometimes it can take awhile - even years - for me to warm up to a song or album. Mind you, Gord is one of those rare birds where I like or love almost everything, but even the great man himself can have an off day!
Sweet Guinevere I have always liked. The Endless Wire album is one of my favourites and I listen to every song. Besides, my father's name was Ernie, so there's a bit of sentiment there for me too. |

I love the huge "NOPE" response!!! :D
I have never been a fan of "Canary Yellow Canoe" either but it isn't horrible. Let's not forget that it is an out take which means that even Lightfoot said "Ummmmmmm.......nah." I can't think of any Lightfoot tune that I actually hate. I do skip a few due to overplaying or I find them a bit boring. Still, that does not take away from the quality. The guy has written hundreds of songs and not one of them makes me say "Run for the hills!" Now take a band like the Red Hot Chili Peppers. EVERY song is a piece of garbage. |
LSH - LOL you got me on the hummable thing ! You are right it just goes to show....exceptions to everything. I guess I was finding it to be a highlight of an otherwise difficult song for me to listen too.
Now that its mentioned, I gotta agree on Miguel... that one I think simply reflects the earlier stage of his abilities as they progressed. Its only a bit of a strain for me, I'm not unable to listen to that one. :) geo steve |
Just goes to show how different our taste is even in the realm of our same good taste - I love Miguel. I find myself humming it often and the story is so sad (I like sad songs)

I've liked the Red Hot Chili Peppers for a long, long time.
The Beatles on the otherhand are nothing but insolent noise to my ears. I love the song "Miguel". It's one of my favorites on the album. |
