In 6 days, Gordon begins his 2001 tour with a concert in Ft. Myers, FL.
I have a question I'd like the folks here to answer, if willing. We know that there are about 9 songs that Gord plays in virtually every concert: IYCRMM CRT EMR DonQ In My Fashion Beautiful (for Char) Wreck Sundown Carefree Highway Every concert I have heard has also included "Rainy Day People." In recent concerts, "Baby Step Back," "14 Karat Gold" and "A Painter Passing Thru" are almost inevitable. He also has been doing "Old Dan's Records" as his typical encore. So let's assume that his concerts this year are likely to include those 14. I may be wrong, but let's assume the above for sake of discussion. My question is, setting aside these 14 and not including them, please list 10 songs that you would BEG to hear Gord play this year, i.e., your top 10 wish list of the "rotated" songs. The ones that will make you cry, or faint, or gasp when you hear the first chords. It could be your absolute favorites, or songs that you have not heard him perform live recently or ever before, or any other criterion. I'll start it off with the following, in rough chrono order: Affair on 8th Avenue 2Much2Lose Sit Down Young Stranger It's Worth Believing Hi'way Songs Christian Island (for "Silver Heels") The Watchman's Gone Heaven Don't Deserve Me I'll Tag Along (particularly at Massey) and something brand new from his upcoming album Put it this way. If I could hear even half of these live this year, I'd be extremely happy. If we all list them now, those of us who attend his concerts can report back to the others when we hear one of their "wish list." Any takers? ------------------ "And the laughter came too easy for life to pass me by." - SDYS |
The #1 wish would be to tour Australia. But for 10 other songs:
1) Salute 2) Betty called me in 3) sometimes i don't mind 4) ecstasy made easy 5) if i could 6) fading away 7) much to my surprise 8) wherefore and why 9) farewell to annabel' 10) in a windowpane sounds good, eh? :) |
1. Dreamland
2. Daylight Katy 3. Tattoo 4. If You Need Me 5. Salute 6. Spanish Moss 7. Summertime Dream (whether he hits the note or not.) 8. I'm not supposed to Care 9. Triangle 10. Christian Island The above in no particular order. Bend in the Water would make a nice encore too, don't ya know. |
I really, really tried to list only 10!
In no particular order, here are some of the ones I don't believe I have heard in concert for a very long time. In no paticular order here's my wish list: 1. Tattoo 2. Hi'way Songs 3. Same Old Loverman 4. Stone Cold Sober 5. Wherefore and Why 6. Seven Island Suite 7. Ten Degrees and Getting Colder 8. A Passing Ship 9. The Last Time I Saw Her Face 10. Now and Then and bumped off the list, but not by much (maybe they could be encores!) Can't Depend on Love Mountains and Maryann Miquel Jenney |
if Gord sang I'll Tag Along at Massey I would need to be airlifted to the hospital. well actually there's a hospital right across the street! lol I honestly don't think I could stand it - it
would kill me right there in my seat. I can't even watch it on video without weeping like a girl,. so yes I'd want him to sing that. then he'd have to sing saturday clothes. just because. Christian Island Mountains and marayann 2 much 2 lose same old obsession yarmouth castle - never seen it live the circle is small i'm not supposed to care talking in your sleep summer side of life - (airlift) too late for prayin if children had wings pussywillows a painter passing through it's too late, he wins oh lordy - this is too hard! he can sing the freakin alphabet and i'd sit there for days! lol gigi |
Ok, I haven't been to a concert yet, so at least two of these are songs that Gord has played recently, but only occasionally. When I finally see Gord in May, I don't want to miss them. So here are my votes, in no particular order:
1. Seven Island Suite 2. Ballad of Yarmouth Castle 3. High and Dry 4. Sit Down Young Stranger 5. Fading Away (I know Gord plays this often lately, but I heard this for the first time on the tape of the concert from Reno, since I don't have the album Waiting for You yet, and I love it so I don't want to miss this one). 6. Hi'way Songs 7. Fine As Fine Can Be 8. The Mountains And Maryann 9. Cherokee Bend (Again, this one is played every once in awhile, but I don't want to miss it). 10. Finally, something interesting from Cots: Maybe Bend In The Water or Rainbow Trout. |
For me it would be a thrill to hear "Does Your Mother Know?". It's always been a poignant song, one I could relate to in years past and still do. (There's a lot my mother doesn't know!) After that, "Tattoo", "Can't Depend on Love", "Now and Then".
--Judy ------------------ "the mornin' after blues, from my head down to my shoes..." ------------------------- "Laughing eyes and smiling face..." |
Do I really have to limit this to ten songs? Ok, this is my first ten but I may be back.
1. It's worth believin' 2. Race among the ruins 3. Christian Island 4. I'm not supposed to care 5. Summertime dream 6. Talking in your sleep 7. Seven island suite 8. Yarmouth Castle 9. Sit down young stranger 10.Same old obsession ------------------ "some people join the party, and others say goodnight" |
I have seen Gordon in concert ten times since 1992. Here is my list in no paricular order.

Well, if Gord actually sang all of these songs in addition to ones he normally does, we can tape it and call it "Gord Says Farewell", because his voice would be gone after the 5-6 hours or so it would take to peform them. I first saw GL in 1972 and someone in the audience kept calling out for "Rosanna". Not having purchased "The Way I Feel" LP, I wasn't familiar with it. After purchasing that LP I understood why he didn't peform it. If anyone's familiar with the tune it really stetches the upper registers of his voice. I doubt he could have done it. Also, he was fresh off of the recovery from Bell's Palsy.

Western Star,
I think you make a valid point, but also that you are a little off-topic. Of course, Gord can't sing all of these songs. But he might sing some of them. And I was just hoping to hear the views of various folks here as to which songs would constitute a "dream concert." Would you care to post your 10? David |
2M2L this is such a great topic! And such a
difficult one. Still - here goes with my first ten ... in no particular order. cHRISTIAN ISLAND It's Worth Believin' I'll Tag Along (just Gord and guitar) I'm Not supposed to Care Farewell to Nova Scotia Same ol' Obsession Home from the Forest Minor Ballad Did She mention My Name Triangle If It Should Please You Cherokee Bend ... I knew I'd go over the ten! I have more - back later. |

I was being rather tongue-in-cheek with the "Farewell Concert" quip, and my comment on Rosanna was that even 5 years after recording it, I wondered if he still had the range to sing it. That may be the case with some of the 10 songs that people would want to hear. My 10? How about 10 tunes that have yet to see their way to vinyl or disc? ------------------ |
Western Star,
I picked one of those myself! LOL I'd also love to hear something new. Although I have no right to be so, I'm somewhat envious of those who are able to say they heard The Wreck before it was released, or more recently, Drifters. As for something old that hasn't made it to vinyl or CD, a friend tells me that Gord's cover of Farewell to Nova Scotia would be a fantastic song to hear Gord perform. I recall that the liner notes to Songbook had a picture of an old set list that included a few unfamiliar songs. Do you know of any others? Actually, I think I'll start a new topic with this one, so that this thread continues with the concert Wish List theme. ------------------ "And the laughter came too easy for life to pass me by." My personal list:

Actually, I think I'll start a new topic with this one, so that this thread continues with the concert Wish List theme. I heard him perform "Partners" early on ('72) but the acoustics in the auditorium were lousy, and I couldn't make out all the words. When I did learn the words, it sounded more dark, almost evil, when I thought it was rather humorous the first time, when I didn't hear all the words. If the list of songs you saw in "Songbook" were taped to the back of his guitar, there were a few he didn't write. That might make an interesting subject: "Lightfoot sings tunes he didn't write". ------------------ |
If at first you don't succeed, try try again! I left too many albums out of the mix, so here is 15 songs on my wish list...one from each Gord album from '7o on:
7o IYCRMM - Minstrel of the Dawn 71 SSOL - Nous Vivons Ensemble 72 DQ - Christian Island 72 ODR - It's Worth Believin' 74 Sundown - The Watchman's Gone 75 COTS - Bend in the Water 76 SD - Summertime Dream 78 EW - If Children Had Wings 8o DSR - Mister Rock of Ages 82 Shadows - I'll Do Anything 83 Salute - Salute(A Lot More Lovin' Too) 86 EOM - Anything For Love 93 WFY - Only Love Would Know 98 APPT - My Little Love 99 Songbook - Borderstone Although "Circle is Small"(EW) is my favorite Gordon Lightfoot song, I'd rather not hear it live. Nothing can top the album version...or maybe it's that I wouldn't want to cry at the show! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/redface.gif Good Luck in sunny Florida Gord! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif 2Much2Lose, nice topic. I was looking at your wishlist and noticed "It's Worth Believing" and tried to think of what I chose for that album...I think it was Lazy Mornin', but your right...I'd rather hear this one, reminds me of GGII. *DING*. I just though of something. With all these wishlists, some songs keep on appearing often. The most requested songs can be sent to him by Char like the birthday messages last year. Any thoughts?
A tour of Australia will be nice along with the songs :) |

Mountains and Maryann
Bitter Green Affair on 8th Avenue Can't Depend on Love Now and Then Never Too Close Romance I'll Tag Along Drink Your Glasses Empty Forgive Me Lord With Bend in the Water as encore. ------------------ The winter wind has turned my head but I always came up warm somehow. |
My dream concert would be Gordon performing the entire "Old Dan's Records" LP. But if I would be so lucky as to have a second dream concert, these are my 10 favorites right off the top of my head:
1. Bend In The Water 2. Spin, Spin 3. Christian Island 4. The Last Time I Saw Her 5. Love and Maple Syrup 6. The Watchman's Gone 7. Does Your Mother Know 8. Seven Island Suite 9. If Children Had Wings 10. Whispers of the North Encore: Sea of Tranquility |
Having heard one concert this year (Coral Springs, Florida) with 4 others next month (Princeton and 3 nights at Massey), I've satisfied 2 of my 10. Gord played The Watchman's Gone and 2 new songs at the concert -- Nightime (loved it!) and Shellfish (need to hear it again).
For those of you who picked Triangle, which I probably should have had on my list, he opened with that. And Gord did Sea of Tranquility last August in NYC, so that one stands a good chance of being played too. ------------------ "And the laughter came too easy for life to pass me by." |

i have to say this is my favorite topic yet. really excellent, but frustrating too. i will, however, stick to the guidelines of just 10 songs: a tree too weak to stand changes race among the ruins high and dry steel rail blues talking in your sleep redwood hill morning glory it's worth believing sit down young stranger |
excellent question! I am going to the concert on may 13 in glenside pa and hope that my selections are selected.
in no particular order... rainbow trout now and then race among the ruins love and maple syrup it's worth believin' go my way summer side of life 10 degrees and getting colder looking at the rain ordinary man too bad i can't put more! |
My wish is that Gordon would come to houston where i live or at least a city within 4 hours.
I have never seen him and would like to be fore he retires. I would like to meet Gordon in person but i am sure he hears thatball the time. |

When I started this thread, the 2001 concert season was just beginning. Now, with 3 wonderful Massey concerts completed, plus Coral Springs and Princeton, my 2001 season of Gord concerts is probably over. So it's time for me to report that I am EXTREMELY HAPPY. Of my 10 "wish list" songs, I heard exactly half -- Sit Down Young Stranger (once) Heaven Don't Deserve Me (once) The Watchman's Gone (3x) Christian Island (3x) A "new" song - Night Time (4x) Shellfish (5x) No Hotel (4x) I love all three of the new ones and can't wait to have them available in an album. But I will NEVER forget the overwhelming emotion that flooded through me upon hearing Gord perform -- on the last night of the last Massey concert -- a song that has been my friend and companion for more than a quarter century -- Sit Down Young Stranger. " ... it taught me how to cry ..." I request that those of you who have posted previously kindly report back on your 2001 experience. Thanks. ------------------ "And the laughter came too easy for life to pass me by." |
I posted a review of Saturday's concert at my web site at gordonlightfoot.com . If my notes and my memory permit, I will post reviews of the other two.
What an extraordinary concert series (right, David?). As you will read in my review, David and I shared the same high point, but it was truly three awesome performances by Gord and his entire band (and crew). So much talent; so much dedication. ------------------ Valerie Magee Visit my GL web site at gordonlightfoot.com [This message has been edited by vlmagee (edited May 30, 2001).] |
Great topic, tough job. Props to those of you who have dug down deep. For some reason, I thought "Minstrel" would have been on more lists. I would be happy to hear Gord sing that 10 times in a row, but I won't list it 10 times here. Here goes.....

sorry this is late. I'm still recovering from PMS (Post Massey Syndrome) ... I didnt do as well as you with your Wish List but I did get CHRISTIAN ISLAND! (My Wish came true!) I also got 'Triangle' - and the Massey concerts were almost indescribable they were so fantastic. I cant wait until April 2002 - maybe I will hear the rest of my Wish List in NJ! Until then, thanks Gord for an unforgettable experience. And thanks 2M2L for such a terrific topic! |
