July 19 -- its not anyone's birthday, its not our wedding anniversary -- no, for me it's the 31st anniversary of the date I saw GL in concert for the first time. It was at Pine Knob, Michigan, July 19, 1976. It was such a great show and obviously had a big impact on my life.
Now, a question for you all -- how many years ago was it when you saw GL for the first time? I'm sure my total of 31 anniversaries will be dwarfed quickly -- which of us has bragging rights for the most anniversaries of their first GL concert attended? |
32 years..first full GL concert at Massey in March 1975.
saw him sing Bobby Magee with Kristofferson at Massey 34 years ago in May 1973. (it's my sister's 32nd wedding anniversary today tho!) lol |
May 3 1974 at Monroe Community College in Rochester NY.

Hi Tim. :) Well, most folks on here know when I first saw Gordon in concert but I don't mind repeating.
It was only 5 years ago, next month. :) On Tuesday August 6th,2002 (oddly enough the same date of my late Grandmother's birthday)...I had a 10th row ticket and a bundle of energy running through me. ;) It was great to see one of the best singer/songwriters around live in concert. Best of all,no one was in the second row,so I got to move up and see Gordon Lightfoot with a perfect view and being able to both see & hear really made it an experience to remember. Met him & the guys outside Dodge Theatre (here in Phoenix) and got 1 or 2 autographs. This was only and exactly 1 year after becoming ... "A Lighthead" :D For my second experince,01/28/2007,check out the thread, "Sit Down Young Border and Tell Us What You've Seen". ;) |
Autumn 1970, Masonic Temple, Detroit.
|
february 2007 at the Canyon Club in CA was the first time I ever went to one of Gordon's concerts, so I haven't even had my first anniversary yet, but I'm planning on going to a few more of his concerts this year. :)
|
IŽm also kind of a Greenhorn... My first anniversary will be next week, July 28th. I saw him for the first time last year in Seven Springs and it was the most memorable concert I ever saw. Then I saw him again in Minneapolis the same year. Will add two more this year in Minnesota and hopefully many more to come :)
|
Either 1972 or 1973 ( must you test our weary memories ?). Flagstaff, Arizona.
|
I know "almost" doesn't count, but this question brought back an old memory. I graduated from high school in 1973 and I had tickets to see Gordon my senior year in Boise, Idaho (either late '72 or early '73.) I was so excited. Then the concert was cancelled because Gordon's dad was ill. I was so bummed. He did not return to our area until November 18, 1982 and I finally got to see him. Yes, it was worth the wait! I have now seen him 7 times total. So, I am coming up on my 25th anniversary, but it could have been my 35th.
|
1969. I was very young at the time. :D
|
October 1976 in Duluth, Minnesota.
|
I think I first saw him in 1969 or 1970 in Detroit at U of D in the gymnasium. Just him...no band. At one time I found the exact date somewhere on line, but I can't find it now. Does anyone know where that site is? Wayne Francis' site only goes back to 1974.
Kathy PS. Tim and Paul...I was there too! I think I have about 25 GL concerts under my belt, most of them from the 70's! |

Annie,
Me too!!!! |
Whoops...I was 16!
The older I get, the worse my math gets. Plus I try to forget when my birthday is! (Oct) |
<<a babe in arms I'm sure.. >>
A babe ... hmmmm ... and Annie, you were right. It was a GREAT year. ;) |
October 28, 1975 in Frankfurt,Germany and then again on June 24,1976-same town, different venue.
And that was it. Maybe in 2008? WeŽll see. Vera |
1977 - Minneapolis
I'm up to 32 concerts including various venues in the Twin Cities. Also Duluth, Superior, WI, Bayfield, WI, Sault St. Marie, MI, Cedar Rapids, IA, Massey Hall in Toronto, and the Paramount in Aurora, IL. Planning 3 more in September and will add Rochester, MN to my list. |
September 1976 at the Daughters of the American Revolution Hall in Washington D.C.. He was *so* drunk.
|
Eliz. I've seen him that way too. Not a happy memory.
|
1990 - Rapid City
|
Hey there, got the day off and here I am! :D
Young in the summer of '69,oh yes! I was all of age 1 on 6/13/69 plus 2 months when Woodstock took place! ;) Sometimes it bugs me that I missed such a great time in music but then I think of the troubled times that went with it. Isn;t it weir how throught history when the world had such simple things in life that others made it harder to live? Now that people have too many things,it's all too easy and it feels like there's nothing to really get excited about. Boy this decade is dull,no meaning to it like the decades of the 20th century. Okay,I'll stop rambling now,I wasn't born a Ramblin' Man! :D LOL! |

Hmm...
It was 1977 in New Orleans. |
I'm trying to remember. I don't keep dates in my memory too well these days!
I think it would have been around 1977 or 1978 at Ravinia, outside of Chicago. I saw him in the very early 80's in Houston in a relatively small venue, sort of a club in the round. I also remember being back at Ravinia in the early 1990s to catch a concert. Then there have been the last three seasons at the Paramount in Aurora. Wyn |
Silverheels, you are certainly right -Gord was not a pleasant sight drunk. It's sad because some people may never see him again and so will remember him that way.
|
Hey Wyn, I've see Gord at Ravinia several times myself. :) Used to live in the Chicago area, so it was fairly convenient. It was a great place for a concert!

As I have no doubt bored you all many times before,I will repeat my point that I was most fortunate to attend an intimate (250 or less audience) concert at the New Penelope Coffee Bar in Montreal on May 21st 1967,
http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/lightfoot/newpenelope.jpg http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/lightfo...lopeposter.jpg so it is now just over 40 years man and boy. But that date is easily bettered by that fine fellow Ron Jones who was avidly seeing and chatting with Gord way before that at The Riverboat in Tronno. Cue for Ron to reveal some stories!! |
Almost 35 years since my first GL concert. October 1972 in San Jose, CA. My long term memory seems to be okay, just don't ask what I did yesterday!

Carkeys, wallet, and car are all accounted for. My destiny? That remains a mystery. Hey, I still haven't decided what I want to be when I grow up! :D |
Lived overseaas so long and never caught up with the LEGEND until 1994. It was a memorable concert. You guys are the luckiest who have seen him through the range of his great career. However, concerts these days are absolutely GOLD! Things change and Gord is putting ALOT of himself into concerts these days. We are blessed, so is he...

re: concerts these days are absolutely GOLD! Things change and Gord is putting ALOT of himself into concerts these days..
I've been thinking about something he reportedly remarked at Mariposa in the rain.. to the affect that, "We came here to do a job, and we're gonna DO it!".. Oh Gord.. you're so lovely.. Thanks mate.. |
...1973, Milwaukee's Performing Arts Center.
It was a blast! |
