ah, but the second verse is just the speculation of others. What about the third verse?
"there comes a weary stranger his tears fall in the dust kneeling by the churchyard in the autum mist, dreaming of her kiss..." |
I'm with LSH. She died and he came back one day long after.

Yes he did come back but this verse tells a different story:
"Some say he was a sailor who died away at sea Some say he was a prisoner who never was set free Lost upon the ocean he died there in the mist Dreaming of her kiss" Maybe it was just small-town gossip... http://www.corfid.com/ubb/biggrin.gif |
of course it was...since almost every line is preceded by "some say". Obviously, they were wrong http://www.corfid.com/ubb/wink.gif

I still belive that Bitter Green is a dog. Just look at some of the lyrics.
Bitter Green they called her Walking in the sun Loving everyone that she met Bitter Green they called her Waiting in the sun Waiting for someone to take her home I mean, what woman would be loving everyone, and waiting for someone to take her home? A starcrossed lover, a tramp, or a cocker spaniel? Add to that the verse that she was waiting for her master to kiss away her tears, and you have one unhappy puppy. Jenney |

It's funny that you should say that, Jenney. i always pictured Bitter green as a Cocker Spaniel, or a really well-bred mutt.

From the liner of "Songbook".
BITTER GREEN Written in a noisy diesel taxicab on the way in [to London] from Heathrow. My wife adopted that as her song after our divorce. I went over to London to write the album, to jog my mind into a writing space. |

“Waiting for her master to kiss away her tears”
Well, I’m sorry! – but how many men do you know who kiss away their doggy’s tears? ”his tears fall in the dust Kneeling by the churchyard in the autumn mist Dreaming of a kiss” How many doggies do you know of buried in a chuchyard? Greyfriar's Bobby? – Not too sure where he was buried. Dog – nah!! I think she we was one of those rather simple girls we all come across from time to time. (Not very PC – sorry.) |
HA! Gaby...perfect. "one of those simple girls..."
can't stop chuckling over that one...farm fresh even... |
It's such a beautiful song of love. To be able to grasp the complexity of simplicity is not within reach for most. Only love would know.

I LOVE that song! By the way, Gaby, Greyfriars Bobby is buried in Edingurgh. Good laddie!
But seriously, it is a powerful song that haunts me to this day! Whatever Gord meant is good enough for me! Take good care, all of you! Sean |

I think the song is called Soup Of The Day: She's thin round the waistline Thin round the brain You've seen this type so many times Time and time again... |

Gaby, I was at Edinburgh Castle and there is a small yard there, underneath the Chapel, where all of the Castle's dogs were laid to rest. Kinda cool, as I am an animal lover.
There is a statue of Greyfriar's Bobby on High Street, just south of the Castle. His master died, and the dog sat at the grave for something like 12, or 14 years! The city took care of him and erected a statue to the dog for his love of his master! Sean |

LOL
You two do cheer me up! Thanks. Are neither of you going to be able to make it to Hamilton? |
Not for us this time. My wife and I are dealing with job and health problems at the moment, so a trip across the pond isn't in the cards till at least sometime next year.
