Dear all.
This is a new topic on the subject of a new live GL album.
{Sunday concerts great but it's thirty years old!}

Why hasn't there been a new live album?
Should there be one?
When will there be one?
Should there be one, what tracks would you like to be on there?
My set would finish with 'Highway songs', with 'Carefree highway' as an encore.
Thats as far as I've got...

Can I say anything more about this non existant live album...probably, but lets hear from you.

Florian, I hope you don't mind if I prompt a large response on this subject.
Lets all get behind this 'live album'

Come in..Florian, Val, Wes, Lams, Gord, Painter, Chris, Janice, Annette, Queen, Potter, Char, Chuck...and everybody else on this wonderful site, I haven't mentioned......You as well STK!

Hi Frank v,

Here is my "Dream-Live-Album":

In addition to the regular CD, there would also be a special collector's edition.

Included with the CD is an elegantly looking box, including the CD, a full size poster and a comprehensive booklet with lots of photos and stories like "Gordon Lightfoot shares little known facts and funny things from his long and successful carreer on stage." Also included is a video-cassette of the live performance that was recorded.

I'll give it a try to do my personal setlist:

1.
A Painter Passing Through - because it's so very personal and actually "says it all".

2. Dreamland - I consider this to be a Lightfoot "Classic".

3.
Forgive Me Lord - Gordon Lightfoot really seems to enjoy playing this song live, and it will make you smile as you listen to it.

4.
A Tree Too Weak To Stand - an all-time favorite of mine.

5.
Alberta Bound - you can hear how frantically the audience enjoys this song (even though in general I am against clapping along).

6.
If You Need Me - a little soft touch after the toetapper.

Now brace yourself as the audience interrupts this song after the first few words with applause:

7.
Canadian Railroad Trilogy
A total of 11 min. long, because Gordon Lightfoot keeps on singing parts 2 & 3 over and over again.
Please notice that there will be a few people clapping during the song before the line "Behind the blue Rockies the sun is ..." http://www.corfid.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

8.
Now again a "soft" one:
Restless

9.
I'll Do Anything
"Playing guitar doesn't make you a star anyway" --- Hmmm.. ?!

10.
Sundown
a song for the band to sing along

11.
Bitter Green - a song that could easily win any poets' competition

12.
Pussywilliows, Cat Tails - as this song is still a complete mystery to me - maybe Gordon Lightfoot will say a few introductory words before starting this song?

13.
This CD wouldn't be complete without:
If You Could Read My Mind

14.
Morning Glory - sponsored by the "Biscayne Bay" tourist office http://www.corfid.com/ubb/wink.gif

15.
Cotton Jenny - omitting the "sickly south"

16.
That Same Old Obsession - maybe a harsh change of tone after the "all-happy-cotton-jenny", but this shows the great variety of his songs

17.
Tattoo - again a very romantic song.

18.
The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald
same comment as for track nr. 13

19.
In The Early Morning Rain -
I listened to several cover-versions, but none came close to the original (sorry, Elvis)

Well, that's my wish list for a "live-CD".

And quite by coincidence http://www.corfid.com/ubb/wink.gif it contains one song from each album, covering a period of over thirty years!

So I guess you might call my CD: "Songbook-Live".

happy to hear your comments,

Florian

I, along with everyone else would love to see an updated live album. I think the only thing thats keeps it from happening is that they may feel that it might hurt the attendance to his live shows. Looking forward to the PBS special

Hello Theotterjudy,
Interesting thought,Gordie that's probably true.
Well Florian what a response and what an
album!That really would be 'Dreamland'.

One track from each album, very clever...
If a new live album did materialise I think we can all safely assume 'CRT' would be on it!
'Pussywillows' seems like a lazy afternoon in the country to me.
'Bitter Green'is novel poetry with the man's return in the end.All of us not knowing if he was a prisoner or sailor...
Your witty comments on 'Biscayne Bay' were amusing.A lot of places have benefitted from Gord's lyrics.

I'm still working on mine,I keep changing it ...I promise.

I'd better post this before I change my mind again!
Here we go.

1)Salute(a lot more living to do)
A good opener.

2)Song for a winter's night.
A surprise.
You need a slow love ballad to even the set.
Powerful imagery,it's also a favourite.

3)Summer side of life.
I've got a soft spot for the album,
it's the first one I bought,
it also came out in '71,the year I first followed Gord.
In all honesty, the track has lost some of it's impact because I really have played it so many times.
But I include it because of the reasons given.

4)Nous vivons ensemble.
A lot was made of the politics of this song.
I just think it's a beautiful song.
'We've got to live together'
Simple and true.

5)If you could read my mind.
Essential.
The song that connected me to Gord.
I would imagine it's essential for a lot of people.
Including Gord himself.

6)Forgive me Lord.
I'm with you on this one Florian.
It's the best track of the previously unreleased from songbook.
It's hot because it's still new to me at the moment.

7)Canadian railroad trilogy.
Surprise,surprise...
I chose this one over the other two epics.
It's been around a lot longer,Gord seems to like it, which would make for a good performance.
It's criminal to leave out Seven Island and the Wreck, but something's got to give.

8)Rainy Day People.
This is the one big surprise.
It was never a favourite of mine in the seventies and eighties, but it's grown on me in the last few years.
I played it a few days ago and it sounded as good as anything he's ever done.

9)Early Morning Rain.
Just as essential as IFYCRMM.
His most celebrated song from his UA days.
It's also a brilliant song.

10)Summertime Dream.
Optimistic,joyous,fun.
A song to appeal to all age groups.

11)Cotton Jenny.
See above.

12)Shadows.
Very personal(can't reveal).

13)Minstrel Of The Dawn.
Full of wisdom.
One of his best ever vocal performances.
Even warmer and clearer than normal.

14)Fading Away.
Good groove.
Try keeping still to this one.

15)Drifters.
There has to be a track from the most recent album. It was this or Uncle Toad Said,I couldn't choose between them.So I flipped a coin.

16)Ride,let it ride.
East Of Midnight represented.

17)She's not the same.
Who wouldn't want a red hot flame.

18)Don Quixote.
Second best vocal performance.
Type of song you really feel you should include.

19)Highway Songs.
This would be a great finale.
The power and energy at the end of this song
is staggering.
It's almost as if it's going to come out of the speakers.

Encore.
20)Carefree Highway.
There was never any doubt in my mind that this would be the last track.
If you are going to say good bye to the man, this is the song.
If I start to list the merits of the song,I'll be here a long time.
Let's just say the music speaks very well for itself.
What man cannot relate to the line,
'She left me not knowing what to do'
what person cannot relate to
'I've got to see you my old friend'.
I've been asked many times what my favourite Gordon Lightfoot song is and I've never been able to answer.
This is the moment I'm going to make my committment.
'Carefree Highway'is my favourite Gordon Lightfoot song.

Thank you and Goodnight.

Hi theotterjudy,

Here's what Gordon Lightfoot said in the notes to Songbook about "Beautiful":

quote:
Love fulfilled. One of those songs I've played every night for over a quarter-century, and I don't get tired of it.

So I guess it more than qualifies for track Nr. 20 on the "Dream-live-CD".

chris 03-17-2000 06:01 PM

Come on guys, how could you possibly leave out Only Love Would Know, from Waiting for You? A beautiful, plaintive song. Next concert I go to I'm going to leave a request on stage for this one and just keep my fingers crossed. I've never heard it in concert. Oh yeah, and Rainbow Trout and Tattoo, just because they're great songs. That's my two cents.

DJL 03-17-2000 07:07 PM

Picture the scene - the band play an extended intro to Cotton Jenny - GL joins the set - stares out towards the audience then - "There's a house, on a hill…"
Picture it? - I'm almost there!

1. Cotton Jenny
2. Redwood Hill
3. Seven Island Suite
4. If You Could Read My Mind
5. Sundown
6. Christian Island
7. Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald
8. Brave Mountaineers
9. Minstrel Of The Dawn
10. Canadian Railroad Trilogy
11. Beautiful
12. Early Morning Rain
13. Yarmouth Castle
14. Circle Of Steel
15. Race Among The Ruins
16. Triangle
17. Talking In Your Sleep
18. On Susan's Floor
19. Don Quixote
20. Sit Down Young Stranger

A Bonus one for me would be It's Worth Believin'.

How strange, this is very similar to the tape I play constantly in my car.

Okay. Here is how my dream Gordon Lightfoot live album/concert would be assembled.

The album would begin with the band playing the intro from the song and then Gordon would sing "Get out Old Dans records"

1: Old Dans Records
2: Summer Side Of Life
3: Don Quixote
4: Carefree Highway
5: If You Could Read My Mind
6: Sundown (The audience would sing along on the chorus)
7: Black Day In July (Although I don't know if Gord would really want to include this one.)
8: Early Morning Rain
9: Cotton Jenny
10: Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald
11: A Painter Passing Through
12: Canadian Railroad Trilogy
13: Sit Down Young Stranger
14: Approaching Lavender
15: Cotton Jenny
16: Ribbon Of Darkness
17: Cold On The Shoulder
18: Summertime Dream
19: Somewhere USA

Minstrel Of The Dawn (Which I have officially decided is my favorite Gordon Lightfoot song) would be the encore.

I've read all these posts and given it a couple days to rest, just to let things roll around. How about this. Somewhere along the line you get Peter, Paul and Mary, Bob Dylan, Hamilton Camp, Johnny Cash, Glen Campbell, Ian and Sylvia and any anybody else who had a hit from a Gordon song, or anybody He said influenced his music, to suddenly show up on stage together, unannounced, to sing an exteneded version of "Drifters" as a tribute to Gordon?
Total surprize to him. Does anyone have a better song?

chris 03-18-2000 02:34 PM

Okay, this is what I would want to hear. I'm picking things you don't normally hear him do live, so some of the standards like CRT and Wreck are not included:
-Race Among the Ruins (sung like he does on GGII)
-Don Quixote (so that you could hear him stamp his foot)
-Rainbow Trout
-High and Dry
-Bells of the Evening (with him on piano)
-Spin, Spin, Spin
-Too Late for Prayin'
-Tattoo
-A Passing Ship (pull out East of Midnight and listen to this -- what a great song.)
-Apology
-Cobwebs and Dust
-Station Master
-In My Fashion
-Morning GLory
-Can't Depend on Love
-Waiting for You
-The Auctioneer (this would bring back a few memories!)
-Whisper My Name
-Stone Cold Sober (tissues provided in album sleeve)
-Farewell to Annabell
-Second Cup of Coffee
-Painter Passing...
-I'll Prove My Love
-Never Too Close
-Only Love Would Know

That's about as long as a concert right? This is kind of like picking your favorite Lightfoot song -- picking the ones you would want to hear in concert or a live album is just too hard.

I have to say that if GL told me (yeah right) he could record this dream live album or go ahead and do a new studio recording of all the new songs he's been working on, I'd pick the new songs in a minute. And, I have a feeling I'm not alone in that.

Referring to my last post,I should explain, the reason Painter and I need to rely on our imagination with regard to GL concerts is that we live in Europe.

Rob,
You've got me thinking...
Can't think of anything better than 'Drifters'at the moment,
the song is good and it's recent.

Chris,
Wasn't expecting a response quite so quick!
I'm definitely with you on new material,
but how much of it is there?
I wouldn't imagine there's a great deal.
Maybe rarities, rather than newly written songs.
I hope I'm wrong!

I would say anyone of those song list's would make a great live album. At first I thought this would be easy, but after I started it got hard to narrow down my list. After much thought this is what I came up with.
1. Cold On The Shoulder
2. A Painter Passing Through
3. Forgive Me Lord
4. Stone Cold Sober
5. Seven Island Suite
6. Canadian Railroad Trilogy
7. Someone To Believe In
8. The Gypsy
9. Hangdog Hotel Room
10.Minstrel Of The Dawn
11.10 Degrees And Getting Colder
12.Hi'way Songs
13.Ballad Of Yarmouth Castle
14.Affair On 8th Avenue
15.Summertime Dream
16.Ghosts Of Cape Horn
17.Heaven Don't Deserve Me
18.Waiting For You
19.Magnificent Outpouring
20.Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald

I also had to have a couple of encores
1. Long Thin Dawn
2. Carefree Highway

I tell you if I had the time I would've thought up a double album. There are still so many songs I would love to hear live, but this is the few I like most. I love to hear your opinions, thanks.

I know this sounds a little far fetched but I wonder how hard it would be to sell the A&E channel on producing this as a live show? The reason I asked, is this is how ablums and shows get started. Someone somes up with a great idea and we build from there. Input anyone?

Strong set Paul.
I may be wrong, but I'm not sure he likes to perform to many of his old UA songs.

I'm all for more Gord exposure on TV, Rob.
I say 'more' there hasn't been any where I am.

I have to laugh,Rob!
It was a typing error,it should read 'too many' not 'to many',which means something different.
It's just a thought.Considering the amount of songs he made in that period. Not many appear on recent concert sets.
I've read in interviews,he considers a lot of those songs are dated,or at least he likes to modernise them.
I personally think all his songs are great, old and new.

I'm with you. My son is sixteen and hearing them, the songs, for the first time, I have asked him that very question. In his youthfiul wisdom, he answered that, "A good song is timeless." (Sometimes he really surprises me.) He thinks that all Gord's music is great and he is amazed that some of the songs I sing are over thirty years old. His opinion is they sound like they were written yesterday.

..."A good song is timeless"...that's a bright young man you have on your hands there, Rob. He sums it up very nicely!

So you want a dream album line-up from me....well I'll have to grab all my "Gord Favorites" cassettes after work and write 'em all down. (This will probably have to be a double album, at least!) So maybe tomorrow I'll have it together. Basically I taped all my favorites on several cassettes so that it's quite a spiritual experience on a trip or wherever, playing all of them at once. Almost too much to bear, depending on my moods at the time! So, stay tuned.....
