Have anyone of you ever seen Gordon Lightfoot Live in concert, using his Gibson Electric Guitar? I have seen him live twice, and both times he did not have the electric gibson with him. Lots of TV concerts as well, only the two acoustics. I have seen him only twice on TV doing, 'Knotty Pine'. Once at the 1983 Juno Awards, and the second time, in Roy Thomson Hall, at a Good Brothers concert. I myself think that guitar sounds awesome, with his finger pickin technique...Jesse. |

I saw him in San Diego about the time "Salute" came out - he did indeed play the Gibson SG. It was certainly strange to see him behind an electric guitar!

I also saw him on the "Salute" tour play the electric Gibson on stage. When he picked it up, murmurs could be heard from the audience. Gordon just laughed and said, "don't worry, I just want to play a couple of toe-tappers and then I'll put it back..." :D

Is that right, closetcanadian? Where was this? It's kind a funny eh, that folk singers fan seemed to be afraid of the electric guitar. He plays it with finger style, just has he plays his Martin Acoustic, which I think sounds OK...Jesse.

Jesse,
If I remember correctly, it was in 1983 and I saw Lightfoot at Occidental College in Pomona, CA. He sang 3 or 4 tunes from the Salute album. I must admit I did not care for that album when I first bought it but it's grown on me over the years. There are some very good songs on there but I still cannot stand Canary Yellow Canoe! I hit the "skip" button every time when that one starts to play... I can't blame GL or anyone else for wanting to play an electric guitar. I was surprised how much easier they are to play than an acoustic. The action on electrics is so low and effortless. I don't own an electric myself but I have been tempted by a few strats I've looked at! Best regards, cc |
I have a Strat and I rarely play it. My son Matt always digs it out when he visits, though.
|
That is true closetcanadian, very true, but to hear the beautiful acoustic sound is truly amazing...Jesse.

I saw Gord in Milwaukee once, back in '83 or so... had the electric guitar, broke a string during 'Broken Dreams'... left the stage, show over!
No encore, no nothin! Guess he had a bad night... |

If I'm not mistaken, that was during his drinkin' days. Not that it's an excuse, but it kind of makes me wonder if he was really himself that night, to just walk off stage like that and not come back.

September, 1982. I don't remember his doing Broken Dreams that summer, before he quit, but maybe he did. I too can't imagine him just walking off once he was performing sober.
|
IF Gord or one of his people should happened to read this, and IF he wanted to make amends for that Milwaukee performance, now we're talking my neck of the woods! It would be incredible to see him play at the ampitheater at the Summerfest grounds on the shores of Lake Michigan. A lot of IF's I know, but what the heck, it doesn't hurt to ask.
|
Not that he needs to make amends for anything he has ever done, but I'm just saying IF...

I saw him in concert at a community college in the Rochester area on May 3 1974 and he broke a string mid-song (can't remember which) but he just stopped, whipped another one out and changed it onstage, making some comments about the risks of live performing. While he adjsuted/tuned etc the audience (mostly college students) amused themselves by throwing Frisbees around the auditorium.

I saw Gordon on "The Alan Thicke Show or "Thicke Of the Night" (the show ran Sept. '83-May '84)and he had the electric guitar on.
He sang "Broken Dreams" from Salute and then later did "Early Morning Rain" in which Alan joined in with him! ( ) Alan...stick to comedy okay? LOL! :D |
Saw Gord in April 1984 in Minneapolis. He did a number of songs off of Salute using the electric. Don't remember any guitar string breaking. I remember he abandoned the electric guitar in concert by the time he resumed touring in 1986.
|
Whoops. I meant resumed touring in 1987.
Gord took 1986 off from touring. |

Does anyone remember him playing piano? I remember him from the mid seventies playing, "Fine as Fine can Be" and "Bells of the Evening" all by himself on a grand piano. That was pretty surprising. |
I saw him at Massey pretty well every time he was there since 1975..loved the piano playing and electric guitar period too. I really loved when he sat on a low black stool with his guitar and the sax player came out of the darkness..
Loved the old red carpet and vase of roses...tuning the 12 string and those beligerent "B's"..Rick and his 'walking bass' and Lightfoot introducing the band...and they then shook hands with each other.. omigoodness ...! and Pee Wee with the false nose and mustache and Lightfoot feigning surprise when he looked over at him every night! lol Every concert stands alone as just right for that moment in time...he was The Man - still is. |

Hey Charlene, that was a great post. In just a short paragraph, you brought back a bunch of memories of Gord concerts from the past. I don't have the greatest memory, but as I read each little description, I thought "Oh yeah...that's right". Thanks for reviving the memories that would otherwise be lost. Anytime you want to deliver a vignette from the past, I'm all ears.

Gord could jam on his ukulele, and it'd be pure gold!!!!!

Ooops~! You're so right Doug!
It's been a long awhile, but yes, it was the title track. Thank you! |
talking about concerts from Massey Hall, where I was working as an usher, and the mid 70s I remember 74 or 75 or 76 when he brought his son and daughter out - seperately on different ocassions - had them sit down on stage by the piano and he played them a song he had written for them
now this is reaching deep deep back in the almost shadowy memories vaults but one child was seranaded with the pony man and the other child was serenaded with ... help something from a mid 70s release for a child any other less faulty memories out there? |

re: Saw Gord in April 1984 in Minneapolis. He did a number of songs off of Salute using the electric.
I was at this show as well.. I've seen 27 shows over the years, but this one stands out because the North Stars were playing the St. Louis Blues in a game 7 of a playoff series at the Met Center. It was a painful choice to go see Gord on the same night, but we had to do what we had to do.. I recall very distinctly Gord telling the audience after a song or two that "We'll keep ya updated on the hockey match." (which I don't remember that he ever did).. and I recall the word "match" as opposed to "game" which he delivered in his warm friendly way with a little wink in the voice etc.. I recall that night also he played Knotty Pine on the electric guitar and was really struggling with his picking chops for some reason and right near the end of the tune he shook his head, smiled and said into the mic, "Sorry it's not my night for this one folks," also in a very warm tone. We ran out of Northrup Auditorium to the car after the encores to find the game (on the radio) in overtime.. High drama.. game 7 in overtime. We high-tailed it for home but North Star Steve Payne scored to end the game (and the series) before we could get on the freeway.. memories of a great night.. |
It was April 22nd, 1984..
