what the hell is happening around here?. i've been on this board since mid-2000 and have noticed a big downhill slump in the last few months. politics have now appeared. what have they got to do with GL?. nothing.
I know that there is a small close knit group around here that knows more than we do about everything, including the health problems ect. most threads nowadays seem to go no where and just end up drifting off topic. as well as that, people that have been here for a long time have now left the place because of all the hostility around here. i don't blame them there are chat rooms, and other groups for small talk which is off-topic. use them. can we just get back to how things used to be and use this place to have discussions about GL and keep it at that? i'm sure a small group don't like seeing this type of post, but i'm also sure that most people around here would agree with me. let's talk about GL |

I agree with you. I don't check in as often any more either, because it seems like there is always somebody with a political opinion that irks me!

I suspect with Gord out of commission for the indefinite future, we don't have concerts etc to review as we did before. I haven't left the board. Just biding my time til we have some fresh stuff to discuss.

Joveski,
I have to admit I recently strayed from the purpose of the forum and posted a topic that was not Lightfoot related though I tried to tie it in. It immediately opened up a maelstrom of insults and arguments. (I deleted the post and took the mutated thread with it). Thank you for reminding me and the others just what this place is for. This is like stopping in for a cup of coffee with some friends who understand some oblique part of you that others may not. I enjoy this site very much, and certainly don't want it to stop. There are some really nice people here. Let's have fun again! |
I'm going to raise hell until I hear an apology from the numbnuts who compared the death of the Columbia astronauts to the people on the train in the 3rd world county.

I've not seen all this so called hostility until I read the replys to your post from this Canada guy posting here. If the subject is about things that Gord likes or other musicians that Gord knows,or the great lakes which Gord sings about, I can't see anything wrong with talking about these things sometimes, it has Everything to do with Gord.. Peace, Randy

Can I simply suggest that if someone posts something so base and off-topic that we just ignore it, and reply to the post previous to the "flamer". They will lose interest if they don't get our goat and go on to another board....

I agree with Gord that with GL out and no information forthcoming we are getting restless. I hope that some news comes through sometime soon. Do want to thank Suzi though I found that vinyl Gords Gold II, thank you for the link.

Joveski,
I agree 100% with what you said and will support any thread even vaguely GL related but it has to have something to do with GL or I'm not here for that. Some of the older names are still lurking but rarely posting for reasons you mentioned. Let's give it another try. And like Gord mentioned we are all sort of biding our time until something new comes up to discuss. Peace. Bill http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif |
I feel for Brian here, and understand fully what he is saying about this site being a lot like having a cup of coffee with a group of "like minded" friends. ( never forget that we are all here because we think that Gordon Lightfoot is the greatest singer / songwriter ever ).
When something "big" happens in the world, many people need to discuss it with their friends. And we "are" all friends here.. So why not let people post an item which simply says,"I would like to discuss the ....events, I'm posting in Small Talk, if anyone would like to discus". Lets not be policeman, lets just treat this in a civilised manner. In saying this I still agree a lot with my fellow Melbournian, Joveski, we are not getting a lot of meaty topics, and I think Gord is right much of this is due to GL's health. I'm not sure about this inner circle of "knoweverythings", I doubt that there is such a gang. But one thing I am sure of is that most of the stupid and abusive comments come from the un registered posters that we seem to have a rash of at the moment. Maybe we should be thinking of stopping these people from posting.. ?? anyway.. keep smiling.. Ron. |

Cathys'comments are rhetorical. If we don't respond to the comments made here the person will not continue to post disruptive ideas. We can chose what level of maturity we will respond. GL loved the circus didn't he? GS |

Ignoring the idiot boy/girl for a moment a few things here are a good example to answer your question. Someone makes a joke/comment. Then someone else replies for the person, usually out of context, e.g. as if the joke was not a joke. Then the original person reads some of the stuff and apologizes or gets mad. And some posts that should be deleted by the administration just sort of hang around. But I'm with you joveski, let's talk about Gord.

Well,I know I've done my best to stay on topic, with the exception of replying to DMD3's comment about the end of the war. It is not so easy to stay on topic when there's not that much new to talk about. I'll keep trying though. By the way,Joveski, how could you let someone get to you like that? I would think that anyone that participates or runs any website would know that there's always some "individual" that's going to post things that get on people's bad side. The best thing to do is just ignore it and never answer them. All of us here are certainly more mature than to lower ourselves to petty little kid's games & actions. If this site did ever deteriorate into that,I truly would be outta here. I hope it doesn't come to that.

Lightfoot covers many topics in his songs, from politics and pines, to toads and trout. Why can't we, likewise, discuss a similar variety of topics, as issues arise?

I think that as of late many topics that are not related to GL have been allowed to be discussed. Problems arise when people with differing opinions can't co-exist in the same environment. I like to separate issues from people. Sure, it's fine to discuss, debate and even agree to disagree but when you can't leave the differences alone and move on, there will always be problems.
I think this is why Joveski brought this topic up. It's not so much what is discussed but rather can it be discussed in a responsible manner and not have people storm off. Imagine where this country would be if our forefathers couldn't co-exist with other very strongly opinionated people. If everybody cried like babies whenever someone challenged them, we would never get anywhere as a society. You can't go anywhere when you remain in neutral. It takes other people challenging your views for growth to occur. For some it is like evolution...very painful and sloooooow. Some of my best friends are the total opposite of me when it comes to religion and politics but yet we remain the best of friends. I think that some people feel threatened when they come across others who challenge their views and cannot put that aside. They tend to take things personally and get mad. So, I guess my opinion is that "off-topics" should be discussed but if someone cannot walk away from a discussion without being offended and holding grudges, perhaps they never should have entered it in the first place. A good rule of thumb that I like to follow is "nobody can make me mad without my persmission." Getting angry is something that we choose to do. |
Reading this thread is quite interesting, I suspect that the D***H***, expecting an apology will grow his third set of teeth before he gets an apology.
However, a GL topic. I have just bought the Dylan CD of 'The Rolling Thunder Revue' in the booklet that accompanies it there is a nice picture of Gordon and Dylan 'jamming' together somwhere. It says in the book that "In Toronto, Gordon Lightfoot brought the house down when he sat in" Was anybody in the audience that night in Toronto in 1975? If so how was it? What song(s) did Gordon do? ________ Ipad cases |

A good question "Sir Jerry"
Just in case nobody else answers his question there is the following detail on Wayne Francis's excellent site http://www.lightfoot.ca on his "Gordon Lightfoot movie roles" page "RENALDO AND CLARA Lightfoot performed on Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder Review when they played Maple Leaf Gardens in 1975. Dylan filmed the entire tour, along with dramatic scenes away from the shows. Lightfoot hosted a party, at which time he performed Dylan's Ballad In Plain D in an upstairs room and it made it into the film" So it would appear Gord only sang the one song and somebody has made a very very short (precisely 1 minute 37 seconds) long Real Media audio file presumably from that film's soundtrack (the ra file is only 191KB and even after conversion to a 56kbps mp3 it is still only 669KB) and it can be downloaded from http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Coffee...realaudio.html just scroll down until you find it or use your browser's "find on this page" menu item to find "lightfoot" [This message has been edited by fowlesjohn (edited May 03, 2003).] |

Further to my initial reply
I just did a Google search for "rolling thunder Gordon lightfoot" and found several references including the following from this very site (corfid) 4. When Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder Review rolled through Toronto, the party was at Lightfoot's in Rosedale. When Bobby Neuwirth threw his jacket into the fireplace, and smoke billowed up, Lightfoot began to worry that the party was getting out of hand Of more pertinent interest is a review of a Dylan bootleg 24=cd set at http://www.angelfire.com/wa/monicasdude/751201.htm which includes a list of participants and the songs they all performed including:- "Gordon Lightfoot: Race Among The Ruins, The Watchman's Gone, Sundown" and a review of it that says "rmd: A great 1975 RTR show highlighted by Dylan's three brilliant acoustic numbers and a wonderful Gordon Lightfoot set. Sound is very good to excellent for an audience tape of its vintage, with some glitches after the tape swaps, although the early part of the show is a bit muffled" Does anyone out there have this bootleg set??
