1979-Chicago Soundstage videos
About 1980, Gord did a TV concert on Soundstage, which was a PBS series. One of the new songs he did was "Ghosts of Cape Horn", which he said he had written for a documentary film about the days of sailing ships and the hazards of rounding the Horn. It also included some clips from the film. Many of the tunes he did were new ones from "Dreamstreet Rose". Does anyone know if this concert video is available anywhere? I've not been able to find any record of it at all, which is too bad because it was a great concert!

I too, have seen the Soundstage you are are referring to. I've contacted my local public station in Dayton, Ohio (WPTO/WPTD) about the presentation. They seem to be clueless but that does not surprise me.

Alas, that video was never officially released. The only way to get a copy is from someone who already has it. Thus, it falls into the "bootleg" category. And, there are strong feelings on both sides of that issue. I see nothing wrong with having a copy of the video. Others feel differently.

I wrote to WTTW in Chicago about the terrific "Made in Chicago" Gordon Lightfoot concert shot there in 1973. They weren't even decent enough to answer my e-mail.

Re: 1979-Chicago Soundstage videos
I remember this concert from PBS very fondly. We recorded it on VHS, but I can't find it right now. If I could, I would convert it to DVD in a heartbeat!

That has already been done but it had been only available as a torrent distribution with originally only a minimalist opening menu more recently an uploader to dime has added a useful itemised menu enabling each individual song to be clicked on the resulting DVD and now if you were to read my posting at http://corfid.com/vbb/showpost.php?p...7&postcount=33 you would learn that Amazon.co.uk are selling for a bit over $20.00 including air mail postage a most likely highly unofficial but very presentable sealed DVD copy http://corfid.com/vbb/attachment.php...9&d=1390936572 Sure you can watch several of the featured song performances on YouTube but the all in one DVD complete with heavily butchered/foreshortened CRT is so much better I even included a link to the Amazon sales page in my posting |

be prepared for when they cut of Trilogy after only the first segment

Re: 1979-Chicago Soundstage videos
Does anyone remember the show Gord taped for WTTW for the predecessor to "Soundstage" called "Made In Chicago?". It was done right after the releases of DQ and ODR. Gord wore a weird pancho type shirt with a medallion. I'd love to see that show again.

Mende are you saying that all this time you have had a video of the 1973 PBS "Made in Chicago"? if so prove it by making and displaying a still showing the alleged "pancho type shirt with medallion" or were you referring to the excellent audio only CD Quote:
Actually I thought it had been regrettably determined long ago that that concert only exists as the audio CD I think there are several postings about that conclusion here is one such from the earlier thread at http://www.corfid.com/vbb/showthread.php?p=154492 Quote:

(The DVD does include Gord's band intros followed by nice interviews with all the band members (Pee Wee, Rick, Terry and Barry) Whisper My Name and the insert notes that ""On the TV" became "On the High Seas"". The final song (CRT) is ultra truncated as it runs rather less than 3 minutes My other complaint is that the DVB producers (Mainstreet Music Productions) whose other offerings seem to be only similar concerts by Dire Straits Eric Clapton and Bob Dylan were evidently unable to locate a better copy of the recording to digitise, so perhaps the original Chicago tapes were too badly flawed but if that were the case surely that fact would have been known and admitted when the program was first broadcast . Also I would have thought that any DVD authoring outfit worth its salt could have/should have edited the colour to correct the over saturation of red or least printed a suitably apologetic note on the DVD insert. As it is I am personally am not too distracted by Gordon having red tinged hair. |

Re: 1979-Chicago Soundstage videos
Have just received my DVD of Gordon Lightfoot/Troubadour Live. It is great, seeing the man at the height of his powers. The song list is:
Cotton Jenny, The wreck OTEF, Endless Wire, Summertime Dream, Don Quixote, IYCRMM, Ghost of Cape Horn (With Whistling, Gord trying to sound like a tin whistle, his words) Beautiful, Hangdog Hotel Room, Sundown, EMR, Whisper My Name, On The TV, (You old sweats will know this is On The High Seas.) but Gord announces it as On The TV. Words which are in the song as he sings it at that time. Old Dan's Record and CRT. Which the director cut as the slow part is about to begin. Some interesting words from the band. With Pee Wee Charles. Not Mike H. Worth every penny of £9.99 of my British loot. |

Re: 1979-Chicago Soundstage videos
I was at Mike Heffernan's first concert with the band at the old Mill Run Theater, Chicago in 1981. It was in the round with a rotating stage.
