Isn't it Gordon Lightfoot time to have a "Star" on that Walk Of Fame? Many other Canadians, do have there's. |

JJ.
I believe that GL has a star on the Walk of Fame. |
In Toronto, The Canada Walk Of Fame yes , but not in Hollywood's Walk Of Fame. Which, Anne Murray has one, Celine Dion, and many others. I think if Celine Dion has one, Gord should definitely have one. :)

No arguement from me but the trouble is how would we go about getting him one?
The only thing I can think of is contacting Ingrid and see if she'd contact the H. Walk Of Fame people. I don't think they'd listen to us "commoners". |
Hey Gang:
First off:This is NOT a criticism. But this has been discussed here at Corfid before(see the topic entitled,"Very disappointed"-by patybear 3/26/06). However, you are both correct.Elizabeth was correct in stating that Gord DOES have a star on the Toronto Walk of Fame. But he DOES NOT have a star on the Hollywood walk of Fame;as you stated Jesse-Joe. If you read through the entire thread I began last March, you will find that the rules/regulations are(in my opinion)somewhat hard to comply with. However,I agree with both of you that Gordon DOES deserve to have a star there. In fact I think he deserves it more than K.C.and the Sunshine Band. (you know-"Shake,shake,shake.Shake,shake,shake." Shake your booty, shake your booty."-SHUUUUDDDER!) They have a star there and Gord doesn't! Can you believe that?! If you think this is worth pursuing,I'm in! Let me know. patybear |

I thought that maybe people in the buisness, should look at something like this , for example his record company, managers etc...People with influence in the music industry,{ie} David Foster, who knows what Gordon has contributed as a songwriter. For a Canadian that's won, every major award, that his country has to offer, and the way he is accepted in the world, not only in Canada. And especially in the USA, where he performs the most, you would think someone in a position to nominate him, would have done so by now. Like B Stone said, "they wont listen to us commoners." Just wondering, and hoping that maybe someday??? Patybear, I know this was discussed before here, and probably will again in the future. Thanks for your thoughts on it tho, from one Lighthead to another... :D :) Even Big Bird, and Donald Duck, have a {STAR} on the Walk Of Fame... :D   :) [ January 17, 2007, 16:36: Message edited by: Jesse-Joe ] |

Ok,heres an idea.I'm fairly certain there are a few members here at Corfid who know Barry Harvey,
or possibly one of Gordon's band members(Charlene and/or Jennifer are the first two people who come to mind).Maybe if we can persuade one of them to get in touch with the right people,we can get the ball rolling.Personally,I'd really like to see this happen, and SOON!Lets face it gang,Gordon is almost 70yrs old.I'd hate to see him get a star posthumously. patybear |
Well patybear, Im sure a good many corfidians are with you, including yours truly. But Big Bird and Donald Duck may have had good strong connections. :D
Because major movie Star such as Clint Eastwood, still dont have his Star on the Boulevard... But if you want a go for it, good luck with it. Since you mentioned Charlene, and Jennifer, Im kind of waiting what they have to say on this? :) |

My guess is that if you asked Gord whether he cares about getting a star on the Walk of Fame, he'd say that he couldn't care less. That's just the kind of guy he is.
Personally, I'd be much happier to see him inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, which is a topic that has been discussed previously in this forum. |

I can't figure how Lightfoot would warrant/qualify for a star on the Walk of Fame in the States...
one criteria is a contribution to the community and then the sponsorship fee is 15 grand. And I doubt if he'd care about it..He's got one here at home where he's stayed all of his life. he was nominated, votes were taken from the public and he was honoured (free of charge) in the first year we had the stars awarded. The Songwriters Hall of Fame would be more apropos. Clint probably doesn't care about the Walk of Fame..he's that kind of guy...humble, hard working...I bet the 'offer' has passed his desk and he's declined it. I am going to start working on getting a Canadian postage stamp with Lightfoot's image on it soon. |

Good answer Charlene. I of course didn't know about how to go getting one even nominated. But to me, having written a song like, "The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald," Im sure is as good as what Big Bird and Donald Duck contributed, to the states.
I guess it's who you know, in the buisness. But I also agree with Winter's Claw and yourself, that our hero, probably doesn't give a hoot about a Star in Hollywood... Sir Jean de Loup are you? Next it will be Monseigeur (sp.?) La Fitte. Why did Sir Jean de Loup get named after a Wolf?
|
I think the thought is very nice, to want him on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. However, I find it rather embarassing to watch celebrities on their hands and knees, putting their hands into wet cement. I cannot imagine Clint Eastwood doing that, and if Gord is in the same category as Clint, it's OK by me.
It is a travesty that he is not in a Songwriters Hall of Fame, or Rock & Roll Hall of fame for that matter. |
I think something even mor nauseating is the fact that Ryan Seacrest (formerly of American Idol0 is on the walk of fame)!!
So tell us Ryan...how did you contribute to the community? How long did it take the comittee to find the alleged talent that qualified you for that star? Was it that "Seacrest out" quote at the end of American Idol? Was it your thankfully short-lived music show on the now defunct UPN network? Was it your.....HAIR??!! Puh-leeeeeeze! By the way,Jess, can you make a star with my name on it? :) Please? |
Not to belabour a point here gang:
But Gord was inducted into the CANADIAN songwriters hall of fame in 2003. Heres the link if you want to check it out http://cansong.ca On the opening page, choose English(unless you can read/speak French). At the top of the next page, toward the lefthand side, click on 'inductees'.Click on the year 2003.On the next page it will read:Modern era anglophone 1956 to 25 years prior to present;francophone 1961 to 25 prior to present. Scroll down to the third one.You will see Gordon Lightfoot.Directly under that you will see If You Could Read My Mind. So if I'm interpreting all this right:the song If You could Read My Mind was inducted into the Song- writers Hall of Fame in 1969.Gordon Lightfoot himself was inducted into the canadian song writers Hall of Fame in 2003. As far as I can figure out,he is NOT in the American Songwriters Hall of Fame. patybear |

This is a joke we have me and John. He sometimes signs in as, Jean La Poule. He's not too bad in french, must be his days in Montreal, in the late 60's, where he saw a young Gordon Lightfoot, at The New Penelope Coffee House. Expo 67, was Canada's Centennial, and Sir John was there ... Lucky guy, I would have given anything to see Lightfoot in those days... :)  |

If I'm not mistaken, it costs about $15,000 to get the Star in place; besides, I would hate to see him next to someone like Donald Trump. Could you imagine how scary that would be!
Playing guitar doesn't make you a star anyway. |

Lightfoot has been nominated to the US Songwriters Hall of Fame multiple times, but he has never been voted in. I'm guessing, but I suspect that Oscar Brand is the one who keeps nominating him. Obviously, when it gets to the complete panel, there are too many people who always vote for some others rather than Lightfoot.
For many years, people who weren't from the US all fell into one category, so it was very difficult to vote in anyone from outside of the country. It isn't hard to come up with a list of fine songwriters from around the world. At the same time, there were multiple categories for Americans. I think, but am not sure, that this country distinction is either no longer true, or they allow more than one person per year from outside the US. That may make it either, but I am still discouraged. I don't even check every year as I used to. |

ha, i remember seeing that one ...i don't even get #2 the Canuck walk still isn't too watered down..there is only one cartoon related inductee (for better or worse) but i think if Big Bird makes the USA grade then Casey & Finnegan should be on the Canuck version I was never a fan of the logo, like someone drew it on a windy day Gordon never left Canada for Vegas like Anne or Celine, except for studying his craft at that LA school and touring, so I perceive all is fine as is but love the support and enthusiasm:) instead let's petition for him to host an upcoming SNL, eh? ;) |
