You are absolutely dead right Davd the exact same thought came to me as I lipread what Gord was muttering as a chorus
the previous discusion that you have obviously read and cleverly remembered was a long thread on the old Newsgroup that began with a question by Cathy at
http://groups.google.com/group/alt.music.lightfoot/browse_thread/thread/299e936a27214e06/0912b0a1f4a8bb0b?hl=en&lnk=gst&q=talking+#0912b0a1 f4a8bb0b
in the thread Richard Harrison (who was at the Nashville recording session) defined the matter in his answer to Cathy's original question:-
In my normal duties, I was at the session, and Gord wanted to put a rhythmic
vocal backdrop on it. Of course we need not discuss the fifties Do Wop, but
we all liked the idea that Gord used real English "Pick a potata" instead of
some form of scat. Personally, IMHO, I wasn't that keen on it, but I could
understand Gord's interest in a thread, since the album also included choral
backup from members of the Jordanaires (Elvis) SSOL,and thus was consistent
with the project.
That whole session was exciting. Red Shea and I having a drink (or two)
with Chet Atkins. Meeting the incredible session musicians of Nashville.
Hargus Robbins giving Red and me a pint of his own white lightning. (still
the biggest thrill of all)

That's what everyone keeps telling me: Pick a potata, pick a potata

someone with the handle staytuned had previously posted
"The male backup voices on this Nashville-based recording were The
Jordanaires: Gordon Stocker, Neal Matthews, Hoyt Hawkins and Ray Walker.
Acording to one website, this quartet have provided backup work for over
2,000 artists including Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison and Neil Young.
Richard also said

"Actually there was some minor bar room discussion wherein Gord presented
"taka potata' as an alternative. He ended up choosing "pick" but he mighta
slipped in one "taka" while the rest of us weren't looking"

It was pretty hard to differentiate I found but I concluded it was "Pick" but Richard did say
"he mighta slipped in one "taka" while the rest of us weren't looking""

Re: It's on!! BBC 4 - Lightfoot 1972 show

Pick a potato would have his lips come together like when he says potato..he didn't put his lips together- his lips don't meet when he says 'take'... ..and you can hear the 't' sound in take.. You can't make a 'p' sound without putting your lips together..

one reason i really like this live version of SSOL, is 'cos i was never keen on the wallofsound choral "ahhhhs" found on the studio recording

similarly, i was never a Fan of the "take or pick or lick a potata" cadence either in studio or live and would have instead enjoyed Red providing his own rhythmic instrumental backdrop for that segment...all the more reason i really like the arrangement JP Cormier came up with...all that aside, TIYS is a real fave of mine

i'd like to have heard a version of It's Too Late, He Wins minus the doowops

speaking of lips, Gord has terrific and expressive command during his Steel Rail yodels

has anyone got a DVD copy that plays in an NTSC player?

can the .VOBs be converted using some sort of freeware?

That caterwalling ruined SSOL for me also. This is much, MUCH better.

Apparently this is the whole show as opposed to a partial bit that was shown on BBC 2 last year.. Paul in Norwich also tells me there is a doc about another fave of his and mine - Ron Sexsmith. Ron has a new CD coming out this month..

caterwauling, lol...i could also do without the organ, especially in the verses

ok, back to the outstanding concert:

love The Highwayman (Noyes) reference before Miguel

http://www.youtube.com/user/gordonli.../2/yKSSsZJuMVk

...here's Ochs version of that poem, 5 years earlier:

regarding Red: i don't think i've seen live footage of a guitarist, of any sort, looking so unaware that he's playing an instrument...it's SO great to see (well, almost) live footage capturing these now historic leads

http://www.youtube.com/user/gordonli.../1/1i67aVJQp0k

...this should have been a 2 hour concert...make that 3

I loved his mention of Kris Kristofferson after Bobby McGee - "written by a dear friend that you're going to hear about pretty soon, if you haven't already heard of him. He's from Nashville, his name is Kris Kristofferson. He wrote that song.....and then he says, "If I didn't write the song I'll tell ya, ok folks?"
lol
He sings so DAMN effortlessly in this show..

This has nothing to do with the music, but I'm still curious. On the very front of GL's 12 string in this show there's a little circle picture of a smiling child.
Can't tell if it's a girl or a boy at a distance. Anyone want to solve the mystery?

You can also try to see if your dvd player can be 'converted' to mult-region player.

That sticker was on that guitar for a long time.

I believe that natural B-45-12 was stolen, and replaced with the famous cherry sunburst, of which he now has two, both refinished.

3. When the download is complete you will find included in everything you have to make a DVD, there are two core video .VOB files. The microsoft movie maker software that comes free with most PCs or can be downloaded for free from Microsoft will allow you to view/edit these files. It will also allow you to make a movie "project" with these files and then burn them to DVD.
I think burning .VOB files straight to a blank DVD without converting will not work.
Im sure there are better ways to do it but the above it one way.

Yes young man burnng a vob file directly to a DVD only creates a Data DVD (in the same way that copying audio (wav) files to a blank CD creates a Data CD)
the vob files are the largest prt of the downloaded folder VIDEO_TS
Mr Google's first result when asked:
how to burn a dvd from video_ts folder was
http://www.gromkov.com/faq/faq2004-0026.html
a full tutorial to do just that
How do I burn a video_ts (.bup and .ifo) folder to a watchable DVD? How to burn VIDEO_TS to DVD?
Hey, got a question. I downloaded the 4.7 gb dvd of Kill Bill and i got this: a video_ts folder containing VTS_01_1, VTS_01_2, VTS_01_3, VTS_01_4, VIDEO_TS.bup, VIDEO_TS.ifo, VIDEO_TS_01_0.bup, VIDEO_TS_01_0.ifo.
How do I burn this to a watchable DVD with all of the menus and stuff in place? Thanks.
Answer:
You can burn your VIDEO_TS to DVD with freeware tool ImgBurn.

I was very pleased to find this answer because I had recently found and very sucessfully used Imgburn when faced with the need to burn a DVD from a single ISO image file
But had I not realised that it could also create a DVD from a video_ts folder as downloaded for the 1972 concert DVD.Instead I had burnt a DVD using the otherwise excellent Aussie Express Burn that I highly recommend for burning gapless concert audio CDs. But I had noted error mesages and sure enough the resultant DVD does not play in all of my DVD players but plays fine with full rich sound in my secondary DIVX certified DVD player and had the downloaded files had no sound when played in Windows Media Player on my PC.
I had then burnt a coaster using the usually dependable Nero.
Both it and the Expess Burn one would not load in our main DVD player but only indicated "stop" not very helpful at all.

well I have tried Nero,Ashampoo,Windows and nothing is burning a copy.
I can't recall all of the error messages...
Someone is sending me a copy from the utorrent thing.
I have a copy but it doesn't play on my computer, just the tv..I got it from England...

I hate computers.

Yes I for one have. My second DVD (burnt using the freeware program imgburn from the downloaded 1.91GB video_ts folder plays perfectly on two of my available DVD players with perfect sound thank goodness whereras:my first effort using Express Burn burnt with errors and had no sound whatsoever in our main player. see the fine imgburn tutorial at:-
there should be no question of needing to convert the set of Visual OBject files *.vob. (although you could use the delightfully named SUPER © Simplified Universal Player Encoder & Renderer.freeware conversion program)
In fact every DVD if you look at its file and folder content comprises two folders
a dummy empty one named AUDIO_TS and the ubiquitous VIDEO_TS
and most if not all DVD burning programs encourage you to add the VIDEO_TS folder

Since the original DVD was made from a digital recording made in the UK it was inevitable that the DVD's vob files would be in PAL format
yes well regarding PAL DVDs playing on NTSC systems this is shall we say somewhat of a rad herring,

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ZnSBKPg7or...ed+herring.bmp
I started a most relevant thread on this very subject almot 4 years ago using as my thread title
PAL vs NTSC of relevance to all video viewers
at:-
http://www.corfid.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=17560&highlight=fundamental
In it I highlit an article by Michael from Australia after I firstly reviewed my equipment for dealing with the problem of watching my stock of UK made PAL VHS videotapes
on a standard American NTSC player/monitor setup
I then went on to describe a cheap DVD player I had recently purchased that claimed to be suitable for both PAL and NTSC although it very soon expired
and moving on to PAL versus NTSC DVDs I said in part
It reminded me that a while ago I came across a brilliant web page describing the salient differences between PAL and NTSC and how that affects DVDs.Having just reread it I must say that it is required reading for anybody with any interest in burning or indeed playing DVD's
It is quite simply the very best and most comprehensive explanation of the complex and oft misunderstood subject of PAL and NTSC DVDs
http://www.michaeldvd.com.au/articles/palvsntsc/palvsntsc.asp
PAL vs NTSC
or,Which DVD Do I Buy?

In which a thorough review of the different frame rates and resolution standards etc is presented along with some most useful observations starting with a basic statement essential to the understanding what is going on digital-wise
Michael then said
"The first thing I need to clarify about DVD is that PAL and NTSC are words and formats that are applied to DVD for convenience, and because of historical convention. There is nothing fundamental about a DVD which makes it either PAL or NTSC , but for simplicity and brevity, I will continue to use these terms throughout this article."
He then spent the rest of the article describing a number of actual differences between PAL and NTSC mainly due to the larger number of scanning lines on a PAL monitor and the different television set scanning rate (in frames per minute) value due to the different electricity supply frequencies (Europe is "50 Hz" which is the shortened form of "50 hertz" which means "50 cycles per second", North America is 60HZ )
Michael usefully summarises these effects as follows:-
"When video source material is transferred to DVD, it is usually transferred in the format it was created in - PAL or NTSC, and the subsequent image has either higher temporal resolution (more frames per second - NTSC) or higher spatial resolution (more lines per image - PAL)."s

I can now add that although the grievious question of the designated region coding of a DVD remains (I have had to change the setting of one internal DVD drive on my computer to Region 2 expressly to play UK sourced videos I now get in order to be able to use DVDDecryptor to rip the vob fileset to my hard drive with any region or other coding etc discarded and then I can use those files to burn a DVD that is then suitable for my purposes .However I think there is one DVD player in our family that had a problem with one Australin PAL DVD so as I intend trying to play the PAL 1972 concert DVD on it I will soon have confirmation
