Kinda funny because I recently made a 90-minute cassette of my favorite GL songs and "In My Fashion" and "Canadian Railroad Trilogy" both made the tape.

Songs I don't like are:

On Yonge Street
Fading Away
You Just Gotta Be
May I
and Half the Endless Wire album:

Sweet Guinevere
Hangdog Hotel Room
If There's A Reason
Songs the Minstrel Sang
Sometimes I Don't Mind

I have often said that if GL had followed "Summertime Dream" with "Shadows", his fame and legacy would have been known to far more people. But genius doesn't work on an assembly line.

To me, Endless Wire is the only GL album I would not take a desert island because with "Greatest Hits", Daylight Katy and The Circle is Small are now represented.

John/Minnesota

"something very special", always skip over it, also "fine as fine can be", too slow, and "never say trust me"

(i was going through some old threads, and came upon this one. hope i'm not offending anyone by bringing it back up  )

i've never really cared for now and then. too slow, too boring. knotty pine and lifeline seem to get the skip button as well.
usually when i don't like a song, its not because its annoying or has got a bad tune, its because its too boring. I don't think i've came across a song yet that was a pain to listen to.

Travis 09-22-2005 04:11 PM

The worst GL song ever is "Anything for Love." Just not him. Over-produced and too 80s.

Other "skippable" songs:
Half of "Endless Wire"
May I
My Pony Won't Go
No Mistake About It

Both "Bells" songs rock.
Ode to Big Blue rocks.

This is a worthy topic, just to see what reflections of Gord's style appeal to his fans.

There's my two cents =)

hkusam 09-22-2005 11:45 PM

It would have to be "Coochaching" whose locale no doubt means something to Gord, but lyrics, (not to mention melody) fall short of being what I would consider to be in the quality of a "Lightfoot tune". (Gord, what were you thinking???)
...and if you're from the area, bless you, keep it close to your heart, (and far away from the stage!)

zoneranger 09-23-2005 05:40 AM

"Too many clues in this room."

Dan O'Malley 09-23-2005 02:25 PM

Lovely to read DMD3's comments again whilst browsing this topic! I Think "May I" is fun, but probably the least indispensable Gord song I can think of!

<superiorsings1> 09-24-2005 02:41 PM

I never liked "A Lesson in Love" for the above-mentioned reasons. I always skip "Bitter Green"
"Affair on 8th ave" and most of the slow break-up songs. But the tunes are so listenable that it's hard to pick a real klunker. I usually skip "Last time I saw her" which makes me cry.

Canadian Railroad Trilogy.

Boy you're crazy.

I dont really like Ghosts of Cape Horn or Morning Glory.

I'd have to say "Canary Yellow Canoe." Sometimes I wonder if GL really wrote it -- or why he would claim it if he did. But this is the only song of his I actually dislike.

I reach for the "kill" button when " Beautiful" comes on. Lyrically it is just one loooooong suckup... Vomit inducing and a cynical play at romantically inclined (and easily conned ) women.

Any bloke who would talk like that to his lady has clearly had a pride (and honesty) bypass...

Gee just when I thought my popularity on Corfid could not get lower I have found a new way to send it plummeting.....(lol) :D

Just goes to show everyone's taste is different. Now and Then is one of my favorites!!

ELizabeth 10-10-2005 09:17 AM

My least favorite GL songs would have to be 'May I?' and "Too Many Clues in This Room'. In my opinion he could sing the phone book and make it sound lyrical.

Steve Sydney or is it Sydney Steve? The song 'Beautiful' is not only for 'easily conned' women (there are many of us - no shame there) but any woman who relishes a man seeing her the way that song does. As for a man w/any pride singing that song to a woman - Are you suggesting GL has no pride? Can't a man w/ pride express the fact that he finds a woman beautiful'? Have you never seen/met/loved a woman that you found 'Beautiful'?

joveski 10-10-2005 04:07 PM

actually, i aint too big on Beautiful either

Borderstone 10-10-2005 08:13 PM

I will always love the song,"Beautiful" and I think it should have been a #1 pop hit! One song i really have a touch of difficulty sitting through is,"Protocol". I understand it okay and I don't "skip" it but,it's just not that easy to get "into".

Sheryl 10-10-2005 09:50 PM

Ophelia, I have to agree with you on that one. I can't imagine why Gord would record that song. (Canary Yellow Canoe). <shudder>

Steve, again, you crack me up. But, that's o.k. I love ya anyway! However, I'm one of those easily-conned women. I just suck it up! Ladies, all those of you who go into the vapors listening to Beautiful, raise your hand!

*raises hand* :D

Rona 10-11-2005 02:30 PM

Hand raised also!

Borderstone 10-11-2005 04:14 PM

I think "Canary Yellow Canoe" is kind of funny & quirky, despite (as I've mentioned) it being a re-do of "Roll Over Beethoven". It's just for fun folks, that's why it was not on an LP,not meant for serious consideration. ;)

Okay, there is a song that I always skip and I am sure many of you will fall over when I say it. It's "Beautiful". I have never really connected with that one.lol I know it is a favorite here... [/QB]
I have to agree. just ask brink, I can't stand this one. I had to confess it one night in chat to get her to confess her DQ ambivalence.

TheWatchman 10-11-2005 09:11 PM

Beautiful and Softly I think I've only listened to all the way through once.

Sheryl 10-12-2005 01:28 AM

Now, Softly had me crying my eyes out and sobbing -- I had to pull the car over and get a handle on myself the first time I heard it. But, hey, I'm an easily-conned woman, I guess!! LOL , Steve!!

Softly's all right, but Beautiful is probably the most boring GL tune ever. Another one I'm not too crazy about is Bitter Green.

Sheryl 10-13-2005 11:58 PM

I'm with you there about Bitter Green, Chris. However, I know from reading this forum, as well as attending concerts, that you and I are in the minority.

DJ in MJ 10-14-2005 01:33 PM

I'll agree with those who are not fond of "Beautiful". It's not a bad song by any means, but I just don't connect with it. I often skip over it when playing that album.

Yes. It's one of those songs I don't like myself, yet I can still see why others would like it.

Borderstone 04-20-2006 08:22 PM

Here's another "least fav. topic" that got kind of out of hand, thanks to former teen poster (child :D ) DMD3 and his split personalities!

The songs I mentioned,I like a bit more now. ;) As we grow,so do our minds. :)

Shutup and Deal, I'm Losin' 04-21-2006 12:14 PM

i always thought that guy was some grouchy old man who had nothing to do but cause trouble. Didn't realize it was another young person. I'd always figured another young person into GL would have be more mateur than that. guess i'm wrong.

i don't care too much for Keeping On Yearning or Beautiful. YourLoves Return is another one that i skip over quite often. those are about the only songs i don't like that come to mind. :)
