I can't remember ever leaving Massey Hall right after a Lightfoot show. I always am planted in my seat by some unseen force and I literally have no power to get up. I don't want to leave. The lights are on and the set is dismantled, the usher has come by and given me the "time to leave" look a couple of times but I can't focus on getting up and leaving. My head is so full of "Lightfoot" that I can't stand the idea that it's over for another 12 months or 18 months - I sense a slight panic start and I feel my husband tap me on the shoulder, saying, "come on they want us to leave." I get up reluctantly, looking back at the stage several times. I hesitate in the lobby and slowly leave throught the huge doors and out into the night. I walk to the marquee and look at Gord's name there and sigh. It takes me until I am almost home to realize that it is over and I have once again heard the finest singer/songwriter/poet that Canada (and probably any other country for that matter) has ever had. I smile and give thanks for the beauty of it all and wish Gord a silent prayer of safety so we can do it all again the next time. Char Yes, indeed. Stay safe Gord and please come back to the UK soon. I'm suffering terrible withdrawal back here! |

You guys hit it dead on with "Second Cup of coffee". That one consice line conjurs up so many images, and brings back alot of memories for many of us, I'm sure!
Some other lines that really strike a chord include: 'The one man band philosophical man Didn't lie when he said to us I seen the high rollers come and go It's the holy rollers I trust' 'From Dusk until dawn, They searched all day long But there's too many clues in this room' There's just so many!!! Hey - speaking of Gordon the Poet, I'm sure alot of you are familiar with the verses that are printed on the "Summertime Dream" album. Has anyone ever heard Gord put these great words to music? I wonder if he has any other works of poetry, not set to music, just waiting to be uncovered by his loyal disciples. |

I really love how you have all posted some of his best lyrics, but just this evening my wife and I were driving along singing Triangle together and laughing about the clever poetry of the song. It certainly is fun and the words just seem to fall together.
rob When she made her last tumble, The sea bottom rumbled, There was no confusion or blame. The Captain said, "Men we must answer again, To the sea, So yea shall not complain." And as they lay sleeping down there in the deep, With their faces turned up to the stars, A tunafish turned to a mermaid and said, "There goes another sand bar". |

bobo,
Speaking of poetry, apart from lyrics, if you have the Back Here on Earth Album, there is a poem on the back of the album, connected somewhat to the song Cold Hands from New York. (In my mind anyway they are related.) Now Cold Hands... is a great song. The lyrics and music are so melded and the story so tragic... It's in the same vein as Cirlce of Steel, but anyway the poem on the back of the album is something else. I still remember when I bought the album way back then and sat down to listen and then read the poem and thinking, man he is a genius. Just another Gordon moment to share! chris ------------------ "It took most of my time to do what never was done" -- GL |

"And will you gather daydreams or will you gather wealth? How can you find your fortune if you cannot find yourself?" I love that entire song.... Me too. I think it is one of the most beautiful and brilliant songs ever written. My favorite lines (in addition to the ones you quoted) are: "Now will you try and tell us, you been too long at school That knowledge is not needed, that power does not rule That war is not the answer, that young men should not die" and "The answer is not easy for souls are not reborn" - Sit Down Young Stranger, c1970 by Gordon Lightfoot I "discovered" the song on the album, probably about 10 years after it was recorded. It was instantly and always a favorite song after that. In 1996 or 1997, Lightfoot brought the song back into his act and I first heard it live in May of 1998, and again in July (both times by request). He hasn't done it at all since 1998, much to my chagrin. Time to get those requests in! What an incredible song to experience live. ------------------ Valerie Magee [This message has been edited by vlmagee (edited April 24, 2000).] |

Here are a couple that came to my mind:
"Down in the dark of a burnt out soul, there's a few good second hand dreams" (Endless Wire) "When I'm drinking to you I get down in my shoes in a waltz with the blues" (Sometimes I Don't Mind) "The songs of the wars are as old as the hills. They cling like the rust on the cold steel that kills" (Patriot's Dream) Janice |
Here are a few that I like:
'If you see me smile don't think I'm acting strange I got my just reward for all my pain..' 14k Gold 'I'm a little uneasy and I don't have much pride inside me, she don't know how it hurts and I'm telling you it's too late now...' She's Not the Same 'and our fingers entwined like ribbons of light and we came through a doorway somewhere in the night..and she showed me her treasures of paper and tin then we played a game only she could win...' Affair on 8th Avenue '...we found a curious moon beam doing dances on the floor...' Now and Then 'Good bye lost children god speed you on your way , your little beds are empty now your toys are put away..' Lost Children |

"Now he's traded off his Martin, but his troubles are not over, for his feet are almost frozen and the sun is sinking low, won't you listen to your brother, if you've ever loved your mother, please pull off on the shoulder if you're going Milwaukee way, it's ten degrees and getting colder down by Boulder Dam today" 10 Degrees and getting colder "This highway is my rainbow, although I might regret it" - Cabaret |

Among the lines that GL will be most remembered for are these: "But stories always end, and if you read between the lines, you'd know that I'm just trying to understand the feelings that you lack, I never thought I could feel this way and I've got to say that I just don't get it I don't know where we went wrong but the feelings' gone and I just can't get it back. My favorite? "At times I just don't know how you could be anything but beautiful. I think that I was made for you And you were made for me. . . . Laughing eyes and smiling face; It seems so lucky just to have the right of telling you with all my might 'You're beautiful tonight.'" (Beautiful) Or these: "There's peace in the garden there's peace in the air, peace in the sound of the river. There's peace in the meadow, the sun shines like gold, and if you were with me there'd be peace in my soul." (Same Old Obsession) Next message will be about the humorous lyrics that always give me a chuckle. |

My favourite line in IYCRMM .... "I walk away like a movie star who gets burned in a three way script"
i actually did not care that much for that song until recently, after the Songbook came out. i never bothered to listen to it much before then because i wasn't really compelled to, but after songbook came out i rediscovered it, good song. |
