Re: Lightfoot on Fallon show

Oh my goodness I’m tired!!
I got it in my head that since I had yesterday afternoon off, I would try to go to the Fallon show. NYC is a two hour drive without traffic, and taking the train is even easier. I taught a class that got out at 12:30, so I should be able to make it easily. I called, no tickets. Tried my friend that works at NBC, no luck. Entered a sweepstakes, no luck. Finally on Tuesday I called one more time and got two tickets due to a cancellation!! Yea!! I called my friend Irene, not a Lighthead but always up for an adventure, and plans were made.
When you get a ticket, it doesn’t mean you will get in. You have to get there an hour an a half before the stated arrival time, meaning that we had to be there before 3pm. Then you wait in line, and since they oversell each show, you still might not get in. I realized I’d have to drive, no time to take the train.
I won’t bore you with details of the ride in, for the most part it was uneventful. I’ve only driven in Manhattan once before, the only difficulty I had once we actually got there was finding a nearby parking garage. We actually got into NBC by 3:15 though, and found the line quickly. Once we had our wristbands, I finally relaxed.
We headed for the gift shop to kill some time, and ran into Rick’s wife Marilyn! She was there with one of their sons. We only had a chance to say hello, then they had to run off. Pretty soon it was time to go line up.
They picked a bunch of twentysomethings to go sit on the Band Bench around Gordon. You should have heard the middle-aged ladies complaining!! I would dare to say none of them knew who Gord was.
We took our seats, nice comfortable chairs in a nice cool studio. If you’ve never seen a TV studio, it’s much smaller than you might imagine! Fallons desk was off to the left, the band off to the right, and the curtain directly in front of us. When Fallon interviewed guests, the guests back of their head was the only thing visible to us. There are lots of monitors hanging from the ceiling though, so we could see.
Once we were seated, things started happening. A guy (can’t remember his name) came out to talk to us, and did a bit of a monologue. Very funny. He talked to various members of the audience, especially a couple from Australia. After that the Roots came out, and played a song, with some of them dancing on the stage. By then we were pumped up!
Jimmy Fallon came out, and the band played the theme from the Tonight Show. What you saw on the show, is exactly what we saw. He did a monologue, then sat down. I was surprised by just how fast the pace is. They paused for commercials, and it seemed to be the exact time that we see on TV. Make up people come running up, pat faces, and disappear. There were a few things between Fallon and the announcer that was edited out, but not much
Sarah Silverman came out, tall and slender, and during the commercial breaks, she and Jimmy talked. They were still audible, so that was fun. It was like they continued the same coversation they were having. I’d always wondered about that. Again, the pacing was the same that we see on TV, and virtually no editing.
Hugh Dancy came out, talked, and played that quarter toss. Again, just like we could see. Next up was Gordon!! The curtains parted, and the crew went to work bringing some of the equipment forward, laying down rugs, etc. It didn’t take long at all. Chuck was there and for most of the time was standing holding Gord’s guitar. I’m sure there are union issues at work there, so even if he wanted to do more, he couldn’t. During all that set up time (maybe 5 full mins), Fallon was talking to his director or producer.
The band came out first and sat. Barry talked to the kids behind him, I’d love to know what that conversation was, then Gord, then the applause sign lit and we were off! Jimmy introduced Gord, and he started with IYCRMM. The guys in the band looked like they were having a blast!! It was so much fun to watch. Jimmy seemed like a genuine fan, and did a great job promoting 50 years. After the show had ended, Gord did I’d rather Press On, as the bonus video on line. One that was over, Jimmy ran through the audience with the camera watching.
That was it, it was over! We filed out, found the bathroom, then I called my friend that works at NBC. It was a few mins after 7pm, and he works at Nightly News. He asked if we wanted to come up and meet Brian Williams. Hell yes!! Unfortunately he had trouble finding us, but once he did we speed walked through the building. On our way I saw Carter and Chuck, and ran over to give them a hug and tell them what a great job they did. I told them we had to hurry to catch Brian Williams, and left them. When I turned around, there was Gord! I stopped to say hello and congratulate him on a job well done. My friend introduced himself, and told him he was taking us to meet Brian. Gord commented on what a special night it was to do the show as it was the night it was announced about Fallon taking over the Tonight show. We chatted about that for a moment, then we had to run. I still feel bad about blowing off Gord for Brian Williams, especially as Brian had already left by the time we got there. Bummer.
We left after a short tour of the news department, and a trip down to the stage of SNL. Irene and I had a nice dinner, then headed home. Again we lucked out with traffic, but I still didn’t get in till 12:15.
I stayed up a bit longer to watch Jimmy Fallon, how sureal to have been there, drive home, and see it! How strange, I had my normal routine of teaching in the morning, a whirlwind trip into NYC, five hours of driving, then back to my routine today.
Wouldn’t trade it for the world!!!

Jenney, thanks so very much for the "play-by-play" on Gord's appearance. It probably meant the world to him that you were there. This had to be more than special!! We're all envious!!

I'd rather Press On!!

OK that was great. It seemed like Gord wanted to say something after Fallon ran over and was shaking hands with him but his mic was already shut off. I was hoping for the old style "musical guest sits on the couch for awhile chatting and then gets up and sings" but it was nice anyway.

Bill :)

From the "If anything can go wrong, it will" dept...

I have 2 DVRs, and I set them both to record Late Night, just to be safe. Because, you know, if anything can go wrong...

Time Warner must have chosen last night to do one of its updates. Because on both DVRs, the recording is just fine for the first 47 minutes, and then it stops. It resumes just in time to show Jimmy Fallon congratulating Gord on his performance.

Not very happy right now

That was a fast-moving version of IYCRMM ... the crowd behind the stage was a bit distracting.

lol, ditto, tony ...my very first thought

....but i think it was a suitable tempo for the vibe (and constraints)

it's funny how these shows always have a bunch of filler nonsense (like the quarter toss, etc) and then at the end will say "oh, i'm sorry we've run out of time"

so, yeah, what would you (or anyone) rather have?

- watching a fairly new actor playing a beer sipping game

- or listening to a brief interview with a legend, speaking words of wisdom gathered from 48 years of touring, and almost 75 years of observation and living???

anyhow, can't complain... SO when has Letterman got Gord re-penciled in for?

Re: Lightfoot on Fallon show

Games are part of Fallons show every night..
His demographic is skewed to his age group and many fans are at the shows to see Fallon regardless of his guests.
The Band Bench people are allowed to apply online for seats back there and some are chosen from the lineup of people who have reserved seats.
While it would be nice to have Lightfoot sit and chat we know that is NOT his forte so it's best left for him to do what he excels at..and he did it superbly.
I'm still working on finding the bonus tune online so Canadians can see the damn thing.
I tweeted Fallon about it. He tweeted that it was an honor to have Lightfoot on the show. I replied back with a spelling correction and got an answer back. lol

good for U, char, lol ...i doubt Jimmy (or 99.9% of the public and 89.9% of Gord fans) have never heard of I'd Rather Press On ... keep hunting:)

oh i wasnt singling out Fallon, all the shows are like that...Ellen, etc, etc...

maybe celebrity's agents want their appearance time limited, anyhow

personally i would rather hear Gord interviewed (he's so articulate and calm and more telling these days) than perform...these days anyhow, i think it's what he does best although the band and mix is sweet, and of course, even with today's voice, he certainly has mastered IYCRMM as an A1 heartfelt delivery:)

No one that was back there got it ahead of time. I had entered the sweepstakes and wasn't chosen, neither was a lady in front of me. You had to supply your date of birth for the sweepstakes.
Instead they came through and pulled the twentysomethings. Two of them ahead of me were there with their mothers, who were then left to sit alone, they didn't want the old ladies!! They were definitely going for a certain look.

yeah - cuz when you think LIGHTFOOT you go right to the 20 year old fans..lol.
It's quite possible that there were NO other online entries except for you for the Band Bench...and you r'numbers' didn't fit the profile..lol
THAT is NOT fair to us of a certain age!!

First time I saw the Fallon show and I wasn't impressed. Only way I would watch would be if Gordon was a permanent guest. At Christmas I talked to a friend who is the head writer for David Letterman. He said that as far as he remembers the Lightfoot appearance was canceled because of a scheduling conflict. On whose end I don't know.

Yes you can save the whole show, then use windows movie player to edit it down to the important parts. Then save it again.

Char,
on the mediafire page don't click on the the first download item you see..
go to the box that says MediaFire where it says download and share without ads staring at $4.99 A month...
There you'll see a lightfoot I'll rather press on.mp4 download button
press the button
it will open a window saying do you want to open or save the file
if you want to save it you have two choices save and save as
save puts it in the download folder, save as lets you choose the folder you put the file in

hopes this helps

I am so sad. I just got home from a work trip at midnight last night, sat down to watch my "save until I delete" recording of the fallon show and found that the screen went to black just as the drinking game began! I've been waiting all week to see that show and am aghast that I have nothing to see. I guess I will have to go through this thread today to figure out how to watch the show. I'm glad you guys have captured it. Thank you.

Yay Doug!!

thanks!!

:)

I am currently trying to figure out how to cut out the two interviews and just keep the first 12 minutes, when he says Lightfoot is coming up before a commercial and then the intro and IYCRMM.... then I want to add the bonus tune video and burn it to a DVD..right now the 'show' clip is too big for my DVD+RDL which has an 8.5gb capacity/240 min.
and guess what?? I have NO freaking idea how to do it.. lol
Shocking isn't it??

You really lost me when you talk about the first 12 minutes. Lightfoot is not on until much later. Are you saying you want the intro prior to IYCRMM, the performance and then I'd Rather Press On on a DVD so you can watch it later?

BTW there is no technical reason why both won't fit on a single layer DVD much less a Dual layer of 8.5 GB. Do you suppose pilot error is involved?

Confirm what you want and let me know via PM

I want to keep the first 12 minutes of the show and his mention of the guests. Then I want the lead into the commercial after the cointoss game when he says Lightfoot is coming up...Then the intro from the desk and IYCRMM to end of show. And add the bonus clip..
My programme said its over the size available on the DVD+RDL.. WIll try a different programme.
Maybe convert the MP4 to another type??
hhhmmmmm......

Well, obviously I'm a few days late here and YEP!....Missed the broadcast on NBC. Had lousy sleep the night before,so went to bed early.

...but,I saw the clips Fallon's site and here
though and they were awesome! What else? LOL!

First song was great and on the second, loved that closing note he did. Something i found amusing in that second clip, that blue sign on the wall that read "Not An Exit".

You better believe it's not,he's gonna press on! ;) I think Jimmy Fallon may have a similar character trait like mine. An appreciation for older acts, even though they may not be exactly" "your generation". If so,I applaud him for that and he has a new bunch of respect coming from me. :)

Night all! Hope Gordon return there soon!

I have no liking or respect for Keith Richards. Ever since he made the horrible comment about Elton's "Candle In The Wind" in 1997.

Saying "He writes songs for dead blondes."
Which would also include the late Ryan White as well as Marylin Monroe. What a rotten thing to say.

I don't much respect Mick either,when I found out he told McKenzie Phillips as a teen (in regards to being alone with her one night in the 70s) "I've been waiting for this since you were TEN. [ICK!!}
