Bill :) |
I can remember hearing The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald when I was about 6 or 7 years old and it almost brought me to tears. I didn't actually cry but I remember grieving ( if that's possible) for a long time. That song has always had an effect on me. After 2 kids and a wife (age 33) I took my family up to Whitefish Pt. to see the bell. Overlooking Lake Superior and watching the waves crash while listening to Lightfoot's haunting balllad is almost a religious experience.
Does anyone know anything about the movie????? |
Thanks Bill. I wasn't sure how I was going to get through that eulogy but somehow, it's almost as if Lyle was sitting on my shoulder giving me the words to say.
It seems like just yesterday Lyle set fire to Gord's drapes and Meatloaf and Mott The Hoople got into it. Such memories. |
Hey Borderstone..When I was growing up and had my first crush...Pussywillows Cattails always bought tears to my eyes...he of course was a little older than I..and I was the unforbidden sister of his friend! lol! (but we did sneak a kiss or two)
"The Way I Feel" can bring tears to my eyes now...its a very lonely haunting song and very deep...I LIKE IT! l0l!! |

Lyle Oh! By the way, "Harmony" really does it for me! |
If Children Had Wings

Hey Linda! :) For me,the song that reminds me of my 1st love isn't a Gord song at all but is,"Love Is In The Air" by John Paul Young. It doesn't make me cry but I smile when hear it because it reminds me of how at 10,the love I felt was nothing more than that..."pure love".
|
Hey, Stationmaster, THANK YOU for my first good laugh of the day. Laughing so hard I was crying.. and this is my second foray into the Lyle story... ahhh, poor, poor Lyle..... LOL!
|
Stationmaster -
Thanx for the visual (I think) - might fall under the heading of too much information, but, hey - I did ask after all.......... My condolences to Lyle......... |
My goodness, I hardly knew I was in the world at 10....quite the charmer you were! lol! That was so sweet... I didn't have my crush until I was in my teens...(you know, those awkward years!!) lol! I'm sure if I had a crush at 10...I would be smiling too....if anything, for how young I had the crush! lol!! You brought a smile to my face today Borderstone...Thanks! lol!

Glad to make ya smile Linda!
:D :D <-----Like that? ;) If what I had was a "crush",then it was like love was a steamroller that day and I was in the way! LOL. :D Probably lookin' flat, like Wyle E. Coyote in the cartoon! :D Double LOL! :) |
Well I'm a steamroller baby, I'm gonna roll all over you....Gonna inject your soul..with some sweet rock and roll, and shoot you full of rythm and blues! (James Taylor...as if I have to tell you, hey? lol)
At 10 years old, I was telling everybody boys were yucky!! lol And yes, you made me smile like that! Linda Quote:

A little late on my part but once again (3 months later) you're welcome Linda! :D
So.....tell me more about how you can be a "steamroller"!! ;) :D :D  Whoo! |
Ode to Big Blue
(doesn't make me cry, but I could listen to the melancholy guitar over and over again) Ordinary Man |
And Rick's Bass glides
So sparing and so haunting as Blue moves along. So much w/ so little. Shivers. The Rez . . . Leviatan |
I bet a lot of war vetran's would have or did cry if the heard "Protocol". That song is so deep and serious. :(
|
Yes.
And The Patriot's Dream. The Rez |
There is a line in GL's tribute to Stephen Foster, 'Your Love's Return'that sometimes literally chokes me w/ tears...'I must be forgiven now'. That line and the soft gentle way GL sings it cuts though me and my soul like a knife. I have all kinds of problems w/ forgiveness anyway.
|
"If Children Had Wings" kind of gets me too because I think of how innocent I was when that song was out in '78 and how little i knew about the real world.
Then I think about how childhood has changed in the past 15 years or so and I feel sad for those kids who are growing up too fast. ..or not at all. :( Okay,I have to stop typing . |
How could I have forgotten the Patriot's Dream? It is the song that sounds lively when it begins, but becomes really, really sad...the lyrics really get to me!
|
"Home From The Forest" -- those lyrics choke me up every time!
|
Re: Steamroller...many moons ago!! lol I wish! lol....the only steam I do now is with an iron I'm afraid! and even now Polyester has crossed my mind! I've been steamrolled I'm afraid...Hope things are good with you?

Things are OK Linda. :) Hmm....polyester? I still wear it!!! :D
Q. does anyone after all these years cry when they hear,"If You Could Read My Mind"? Or are you too used to it? I'm use to it,so I guess I dont. :) |
I have quite a few polyester items in my closet too...I'm just holding out for some day putting my iron away for good!! lol
I can fill up on a lot of Gordons songs...that one especially....I love that guy!! If I went to one of his concerts, it wouldn't be to hard to spot me...I'd be the sobber!! lol Quote:

In response to the original question. "Brave Mountaineers" from DQ brings tears to my eyes. It is certainly not a melancholy song by any stretch, but GL captures the essence of a happy, rural childhood like I experienced and the fond memories come flooding back. Happy tears they are.

There were things that were said, there were things that were done, and a wife cannot stand too much pain... That hurts. |
You know....whenever there is really bad trouble in the world someplace and children are unfortunatly involved,I can't help but think of this song. I also can't help but think of how I wish I could do something meaningful to help them. :(

I had a dream the other night that I was in a store and this lady was holding a baby and singing,"The Tennesee Waltz" to her/him.
Thatsong always gets me a bit and I know if Gordon did the song,I wouldn't be able to hold back the tears! |
Pardon my ignorance, but what are the words to "The Tennessee Waltz"?
|
Oddly, Drink Yer Glasses Empty, puts a lump in my throat.
I guess because my dad and father-in-law were both in WWII in the RCAF. Both lucky to get back in one piece. I see pics of my dad as a young boy, all of 19 years old, climbing into his big 4-engine Halifax Bomber. I see my father-in-law climbing into his Spitfire ... and I wonder ...would I have had the courage to do what they did voluntarily? Today they are both still here -- one 81 and the other 87 -- both mere shadows of the men that I knew as vigorous and strong ... that is their bodies, but there souls and spirits are still 20 years old despite the lines that time has etched on their faces. Every day that goes by I say thanks to them and the 1.1 million Canadians who served in WWII. We were a country of only 11 million people at the time -- over 10% of the population served. We lost more people per capita to WWII than any other country excepy Russia. ~~~~~~~~~ Good night all. |

I was dancin' with my darlin' to the Tennessee waltz, when an old friend I happened to meet. I introduced him to my loved one; and while they were dancin', my friend stole my sweetheart from me. [Chorus] I remember the night and the Tennessee waltz. Now I know just how much I have lost. Yes, I lost my little darlin' the night they were playin' the beautiful Tennessee Waltz. I know there are a couple more verses, but I'm not sure exactly how they go...this is the version played by a guy, and you can change the "him" to "her" for whomever is singing it...such as when Patti Paige sang it...back in the day :D |
Debra,I saw Patti Page on PBS earlier this year on one of those 1950's music specials. She sang that song as if it were still the early 1950's!
It was extremely moving, not just for the lyrics but in seeing the folks in the audience that are my Mother's age & up. They looked so happy to see her up there, like they were in a time machine or something. :) :( (at the same time.) Even more touching that night was another singer from that time Gogi Grant (not her real name). She had a huge hit in 1956 with,"The Wayward Wind". Pat Boone introduced her and out strolled this now 80 year old woman and she sang it and sounded almost exactly like the record I 1st heard all the way back in 1972 at age 4! I got "misty" in my eyes. ...and I'm not even of that era. |
I am . . .
The Wayward Wind stirred my little "pre-pew-bess-ant" soul. Still does - "post-pre-pew-bess-antly" Gotta look for that PBS thing. I figure I've sung that song across the yrs almost as often as dear Ms Page. Loved it each time. And I could do a mean waltz when I was 10. Maybe the two finest hit-record-type waltzes from the 50s are The Tennessee Waltz and Waltz Across Texas. Patti Page & Ernest Tubb. Oh, my! I don't think Strauss was still writing then. . . . and I was born the next of kin . . . The Rez |
"Home From the Forest" chokes me up every time. :(
|
I find Home from the Forest rather sad. Also, The Lost Children, especially the lines: "Their laughter filled the countryside but they'll not laugh again" and "And the young boys were the middle name for guns to pray upon". (Although I always thought that line was "And the young boys were the middle men for the guns to play upon", but I think the meaning is the same). Especially hard to listen to in times of war, when so many young people are not coming home.
|
Rez,that particular special has been shown about 3 times this year (last time at 3am! Couldn't sleep, happened to catch it.)
They may pull it out again at "pledge" time,if you can bear the "breaks". ..but if you have a PBS store in your local mall, they may have it. ;) I forgot to mention,I also tear up a bit because I know these folks wont be with us much longer and it felt like such an honor to even get to see them once, even if it was just on TV. |
I saw 7 replied (I believe) the topic about GL songs maing you cry and I remembered I did this one. :) Almost 2 years ago! Wow!
|
"Thank You For The Promises", Very meloncholy to me. The descending progressions in the melody is what I whistle or hum sometimes when I'm seeking refuge.
