Yes, no one writes like Gord. Each and every song, when you read the lyrics, is a story by itself. It just amazes how the words come to him. I also agree with the remark made about IN MY FASHION. The band really gets into playing it. The song would not be the same without each of the members of the band. At the Majestic it was sooooo interesting watching Michael and Barry play their instruments from behind. Of course it was nice watching Gordon sing from behind too. (I am sorry I couldn't resist that remark)

You took the words right out of my mouth,Sundownbuff, about Gords songs.
Can't comment too much about the band,as I'm not a regular at concerts as you know.

This website is fantastic! It's like Disneyworld for Lighfoot fans. It has everything except one thing. And that is in
addition to all the wonderful smiley faces,
I would love for it have little red, cracked & broken hearts for all of the ladies who are
pinning away for our Hero for the rest of their lives. But then, this board would be so full of little broken hearts that there would no room for the gentlemen to comment!

Regarding the subject at hand. I have recently printed out pages of lyrics thanks to the website. And I have noticed that the lyrics can stand on thier own without the melody and vice versa. I'm a fan of lots of types of music, although Gord & his band are my favorite, far as away.... Most music cannot do that. Melody and lyrics must be together because the lyrics aren't poetry
& the melody, alone, is just elevator music.
This is just my very humble opinion and observation.

I've also designed needleworks with a likeness of Gord's home, including lyrics and one Victorian sampler with his trademark
(last time I checked long ago) roses and lyrics to "Forive Me Lord".No copyright infringement since they were hanging in his home. (unless they've been auctioned off to charity since his marriage. I imagine his
sweet bride had a great time redecorating!
And I'm all for charity auctions! Ok, any of
you guys end up with them?)

Midnightmisty,
Thats interesting,I remember reading an interview with Tom Rush, who said Gords house was stripped bare after his marriage break up.
On the subject of auctions I'd love to purchase one of his old guitars.
I'd bid high for that!

Dear Silver Heels, As I said the concert was just as enjoyable from the back as the front. Gord had on his usual red flowered shirt on along with his boots and black jeans. They are probably a size 28 or 30inch. A nice trim man is he. I think the jeans are levis. They look real fine. The second set he came out wearing his usual black tee shirt with ROCK on it. On his feet were his white, new looking, as usual, nike sneakers along with jeans. He continued to look fine. With the tee shirt his muscles looked really nice. Though I am probably one of the older members on this site (54) my eyes are still as good as they were when I first saw him in 1964 (I think it was that year in a pub on Yonge Street. I might be off a year or so.

How about "Up A Lazy River" (an old Mills Brothers tune), "Blackbird" (Beatles),
"Send In The Clowns" (Judy Collins), "El Paso" (Marty Robbins), "Castles In The Air"
(Don M.)?

Hello Everyone.

I just had an idea about a song. Do any of you, especially our friends in Canada, remember one called "Friends & Lovers" by
Gloria Loring? (she's the ex-wife of Gord's friend Alan Thicke) It was a beautiful song and another one, I'd like to hear him do in honour of his own best friend and lover, wife
Elizabeth. It's pretty romantic, but the key
is pretty high, so I don't know. I'd really
love to have him do a totally romantic CD all
in honour of Elizabeth! I'm certain that something like that would end up being my all
time favorite. (ps. he could do his own songs, too! LOL! But the topic is "written by other people..." so this is just a reply to that. I'd still prefer to hear his own songs, of course!)

To Classmixdj,

Please forgive me for having been so rude!
But I've never heard "Words" by the Bee Gees!
I've seldom ever listened to the radio as most of my listening time has been to CDs, Tapes, LPs, etc. Now you've got me thinking
that I must be missing out on alot of other good music. hum.........

Dear Mr. Gordon M. Lightfoot,

I'm strongly urging you to record a new CD of original material for and about the legendary, mysterious and exotic Silver Heels. She's a facsinating & very sweet, funny world class beauty. It would be to your benefit to at least consider and investigate this matter.

Thank you in advance,

midnightmisty...To "Words" the lyrics are as follows:

Smile an everlasting smile, a smile can bring you near to me.
Don't ever let me find you down, cause that would bring a tear to me.
This world has lost its glory, let's start a brand new story now my love.
Right now, there'll be no other time and I can show you how my love.

Talk in everlasting words, and dedicate them all to me.
And I will give you all my life, I'm here if you should call to me.
You think that I don't even mean a single word I say.
It's only words, and words are all I have, to take your heart away.

Quite touching eh?

let me slip away on you

classicmixdj,

Thank you for the lryics! It brought back the
melody for me, too! And yes, it is VERY
touching! But I think it would have to go on the Elizabeth CD as the one about Silver Heels will probably be another boxed set -
but this time all original material. And they
better not forget the little book!

Dear Silver Heels, It was so long ago, I was 18, that makes it 36 years ago. My girl friend and I headed to Toronto. I lived south of Buffalo. I was, in those days, very familar with Toronto as I had three sets of aunts and uncles who lived in the Toronto area. We often headed north to have some fun. That particular evening we arrived in the fair city and very quickly met up with two gentlemen who led the way to Yonge Street. Low and behold there was our favorite singer who at that time was not very familar to us in the states. I don't remember the songs that were played that evening but I do remember my "date's" name was Johnny, a blonde, handsome Canadian young man who said we just had to hear this great singer perform. The bar, I don't remember the name was your typical pub with a young crowd. I did agree with Johnny that this singer was great as he played his guitar. His name was Gordon Lightfoot.

Dear Sundownbuff, that is a great story.
Imagine, you were in at the (almost) beginning. How lucky can you get! Do you recall how he looked then? Not that I'm obsessed or anything LOL. The earliest I saw him was 69 when he came to London to appear on tv - and as a young girl I quickly handed over my as then untouched
heart. The poor man has been holding on fast
ever since and doesnt even know it!
But hang on Gord -- tomorrow is another day
LOL
Thank you Sundownbuff - lovely story. More please?

Fun question to contemplate.
How about an old Waylon Jennings tune: Only Daddy That'll Walk the Line (don't know if that's the actual title, but I'm sure some of you will know). Wouldn't that be fun and funky coming from Gord? I can just hear him doing it and doing it well...with attitude!
Also, although female vocalists, Kate Wolf and Nanci Griffith have AWESOME material that I think Gord could bring to another dimension. I'll have to put on some of their CD's and consider this further...

Margaret,
You and I are two of a kind. Both struggeling with an illness...And like you, I have good days, bad days and days beyond endurance or belief. But this bb takes my mind off my pain, anxiety and fears.
And it makes me happy. There are so many great people here. And there is one, in
particular who all of a sudden and out of nowhere emailed me in my darkest hour. She is
my "Angel In The Night"....

Back to the topic at hand!

I'd love it if he did "Fast Moving Train" &
"Dancy's Song" by Restless Heart. They're
"Gord" type songs.
