On the topic of Gord's saddest song .... My vote is for "Now and Then."
I've been trying to write a difficult scene today and I put on Gord to get a cure for the old "writer's block". This song just HIT me like a ton of bricks: "I think this time, you've said enough to make me want to make me want leave this place Still I keep coming back for more of the same To fan the dying flame. Here inside these walls That seem to move a little closer everyday There must be a way out of this crazy game We play out to the end. Let us just pretend awhile... Think about the good things now and then. I think this time ... That was the best time that we two have ever known We tried the handle of the house upon the shore Found the open door. Once inside we found a curious moonbeam doing dances on the floor. We were only playing like two children who had stayed away from school. Two of us could not be wrong. Heaven knows who keeps the Golden Rule. I think this time, we've learned enough To know that nothing is the same. Still the pounding of my heart is unchanged... Leaving's so strange. Here among my thoughts of you I find a gentle longing to be free. There must be a way out of this crazy game We play out to the end. Take away the in-between. Think about the good things now and then. We will see the day when you or I wil stay or face up to the end. Let us just pretend awhile. Think about the good things now and then. For me, at least, that song just about says it all. Stay loose, eh? LAMS ------------------ "Love and maple syrup go together like the sticky winds of winter when they meet.... If you go into the forest Gaze up through the trees The sky is white. You can understand What makes the forest Greet the man Like a mother's only child ..." |
I bought JAWS 7/14/2000 and was finally able to finish watching it last night. After viewing again in its entirety, I'll stick with Hooper. Here me out...
I don't see Gordon as so crusty. Captain Quint was very arrogant & uncivil. He was very rude to Hooper, and this flaw caused great danger to everyone on board the Orca. Remember the scene where Quint is driving the engine too hard and Hooper yells at him to slow down the engine because "it can't take it". Quint finally blows the boat's engine, endangering everyone. He finally is humbled enough to let Hooper try out his anti-shark cage. Also Quint goes down with his ship in a horrible death, where Brody & Hooper survive. I think Gord has shown alot of civic harmony throughout his career & would fit better as Hooper. http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif lol ------------------ "...If YoU fEeL iT yOu BeTtEr BeLiEvE iT, yOu'Re GoNnA sEe It, YoU nEeD tO kNoW/iT iS rIsInG lIkE a FeAtHeR, dIpPiNg & DaNcInG fRoM bElOw/ThErE's A nEw WaVe ThAt Is BrEaKiNg In ThE wAkE oF a PaSsInG sHiP/eVeRy NaTiOn'S gOnNa Be ShAkEn, PuT iT tOgEtHeR, dOn'T lEt It SlIp..." Tom,
I agree, Gord is every bit the gentleman. HOWEVER, we're talking about a film role here. Gord could very easily play the "crusty" Quint. Gord is very nice to everyone around him, but believe me, you cross him and you see a very different man. And he says what he feels. He's outspoken to a point. He would never go off on you for no good reason, but if there's a need for it, he definitely WILL put you in your place albeit in a polite way. Hooper was a yuppie. Gord is no way NEAR being a yuppie. I don't really think he could pull off that kind of role. I know that in the "Hotel" episode, there was a scene where he had to "shake" his son in anger and he didn't get it right. You could just tell that he was doing something totally out of his nature. He didn't pull it off at ALL. And he wouldn't be able to do Hooper either. But I really CAN picture him in the role of Quint. Gord is stubborn like that and yeah, he could be the way Quint was. I think he'd have fun PLAYING that role. Stay loose, eh? LAMS ------------------ "Love and maple syrup go together like the sticky winds of winter when they meet.... LAMS,
This doesn't sound like Hooper either... "Now take a look at me, Do I look like the kind of guy, The kind of fool, That went to school, And had to stand on a stool, Because he couldn't come to terms with a slide rule???" http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif |
Reply to loveandmaplesyrup:
I've been listening to "Now and Then", it was one of those songs I skipped over on SONGBOOK. Thanks for posting the song, it is another classic. I hear the sadness in it, but it also has a positive vibe about it. |
Hey Tom, I am glad you said that first...about "Now & Then" has some positive vibes to it...
That has always been my feelings... I remember ending a relationship when that album came out and that song said it all. Even my friends who were not GL fans loved that song. I love that one line..."Here among my thoughts of you I find a gentle longing to be free...." He still has feelings for her but he wants out. There is a feeling of "unsureness". Nothing is black and white... And also one of the most beautiful melodies... Wes |
WES,
My favorite line in Now and Then is: Once inside we found a curious moonbeam doing dances on the floor, we were only playing like two children who had stayed away from school.. Dan |

I've joined this thread very late. Enjoyed
reading everyone's imput, especially since I found myself smiling or laughing quite a few times. Now, if I can remember the owner of each comment & give you my 2C. I settled on Quint. Tom you made a lot of good points & Maplesyrup, you touched on most of what I would say, but since I can't remember the specifics, I'll generalize - Foremost, Hooper is everything but humble. I think the word "humble" has been used the most at this site & the ng to describe Gord, especially by people who were lucky enough to meet him in person after a concert. 2. Both Hooper & Quint owned boats & loved the sea. Even though Hooper was concerned about the ocean, so was Quint and I think in a more down-to-earth way. He was more rustic, and also had much knowledge of the sea, mostly from raw experience. Hmmmm, sounds like someone else we all know & love. 3. Quint was in that scene with the singing, in fact he started it all. The others joined in with their favorite sea ditty's. So Quint was the man first to express himself through music! And as someone pointed out, [Maplesyrup, I think. Sorry to whomever if I'm mistaken] Quint was quite the storyteller to. Now, who would most here like to see as subject of VH1's STORYTELLERS series? [do they still have that?] On the side - since Hooper was the character that most appealed to me when I saw JAWS in the theatre [we are really dating ourselves here!]my immediate inclination was to go with Hooper, cause I'm most inclined to go with Gord in the world of music. I was delighted when [Tom, was it] broke out with the lyrics of the song that Quint sang in the movie. Even though I don't know that song, I knew exactly what the reference was & then of course when [Maryanne?] followed it with I WANT TO GO HOME. And Char, I also was in puzzlement of where you were coming from ;D To be honest though, I thought maybe I forgot about that part of the movie! Then there's the discussion over lyrics. NOW & THEN will do just fine by me. There has never been a time when I don't hit the "repeat" button 3-4 times for that song to sing with Gord at the top of my lungs. I've been less boisterous lately since the new tenants moved in upstairs. I think they need to get to know me first. I most like the 1st & 3rd verse - and the music[guitar playing, mix, etc. etc] is of Gord's & "The Guys" finest. Well, that's about all I have to say. Of course, I'll jump in the conversation again if I feel the need. It's been some time since I posted here. Good to be with you all again. Dorothea |
Canadian Paul Anka (born in Ottawa) can be heard on the radio in JAWS during a scene on the beach singing "(You're) Having My Baby" with Odia Coates...#1(for 3 wks)Gold Record 7/27/74.
