No offense kid but, why the animosity toward old Bob?.. He showed up, it was storming, he probably weighed everything up, realizing it was Gord's gig, and figured not to enter the fray of the chaos etc.. (and it probably was (from your description anyway; lightning pummeling down on the surrounding area?..) actually pretty dangerous out there).. Also, it's old Bob that's been out there on the never-ending tour for 20 years running now.. I for one, (dig about it being "about the fans" etc.) think he prob'ly gets what its about.. etc.. The limo could have pulled almost right up to the stage where Gord's car was..Gord wasn't melting in the rain..lol. I'd have even shared my poncho with Bob! oh well.. long ago it was all about the music for me but for the last several years it's more than just the music - it's the man himself too..and I appreciate the music so much more because of that. just my opinion..i could be wrong .. ;) |

I can only imagine what the burden must be exactly, to wake up every day and be "Bob Dylan".. I'm sure the guy just wishes he could be "Bob Doe" allot'a days etc.. as for the nice things you imply about Gord's aging character being something to marvel at.. I could not possibly agree more.. I always loved his songbook since I was a kid (I've played for 30 years (next year) and can give the guy no greater praise musically than to say that to this day I play with a capo exclusively in the 2nd fret and always etc.).. but the guy's dignity, personal integrity, the way he carries himself through this increasingly cockamamie world in the last, say, 10-20 years?.. I must say.. well, as I'm fond of saying.. Gord is my hero.. (in all the best ways).. I hope I can make it to Orillia.. one fine day.. |

and yes, gord and you guys may have also redefined the term "foolish", lol i'd have loved to for the duo to pair up for a version of Not Supposed to Care (in my top 10 for sure) or whatever but a hard rain sure did fall dylan has penned some of my fave heart-wrenching tunes...when i saw him live at Massey it was sort of like he was doing a SNL parody of himself, lol...he played many tunes i didn't know but even the ones he played that i did know, well, i really even didn't recognize them until the last 20 seconds of the performance, lol...kind of artistically horrid...rather than leaving the show humming dylan tunes and cover in goosebumps, I really just kept saying to myself "well, i've now seen dylan...yup" i hope the two guys were able to hook up later on:) once again, wonderful stuff, char...to add to the excitement i imagine you were seated in metal lawn chairs also, agh! lol |

I split my time between Minneapolis and Pinellas County, Florida..
I made a pilgrimedge to Toronto in May, 2001 for the Friday and Saturday night shows (where they recorded Shellfish and No Hotel which appeared on the new album etc.).. I'd never been to Toronto before (or since).. We stayed in a hotel right next to Maple Leaf Gardens. I couldn't go inside which was disappointing, but (growing up here in Minnesota raised on hockey and being a big Leafs' fan back since the original 6 days etc.), every morning I'd grab a coffee and walk around that hallowed building, that's how I'd start each day in Toronto; fabulous.. Walking into Massey for the first time, it was all I could do from getting down on my knees and thanking the powers of this life for letting me be born and have a chance to be a part of it all (the only other "venues" (for lack of a better word; "churches" would be more appropriate surely) where I had such a rush of emotion wash over me were the Ryman Auditorium, Wrigley Field, and Fenway Park).. Walking down Yonge Street about 4:00 p.m. before the Saturday show, was amazing; all the people, the bristling of life and activity, the exciting vibe on that great street.. Our trip to Toronto was unforgettable.. and I can't wait to return.. Hopefully I can do just that when perhaps the guys book an Orillia show right on the heels of a Massey run.. 28 shows in 26 years, 7 states, 2 countries.. (Minneapolis in September will be the 29th; just like those church bells chimin').. My friend asked me the other day, "How many more shows you gonna see?".. and I said, "Well, somewhere along the way, I somehow got on this little train, and became a part of a story.. a great story.. so I guess I'm just gonna.. I'm just gonna, y'know, see the story through.".. etc.. don't know what's gonna happen in this crazy life.. but I'm gonna see the story though.. Well Mariposa is in July (no guarantee Lightfoot will be back) and Massey will be in May..so plan on hangin' in TO for a while!
;) there's lots to do.. I was further back than the pic shows. Blanket folks were stationed at 9 a.,m. apparently! Even with my OLD eyes from where we sat in our fold up aluminum chairs I could see Gord grinning and smiling and having a hell of a time. He wasn't letting a weeks worth of prep get tossed for any reason. And I bet he was having his own private chuckles at folks trying to get him to leave the stage. |
