I read through all your post and many I would not consider "funny". I was supprise what many of you said were funny when I feel its more of a poetic way of stating something. Some were not about humor at all I felt. Unless you see it differently than I do. Fo instance the one : "the grey whale has run and the sperm is almost done" is very sad if you ask me. Gord is stating a fact of the two whales being near there demize or end. How sad but not funny!Since when is Bend in water about sex???
I think the Underware one is the classic; so is the line from In my fashion about "sitting on ah stool ... etc" How about these lines? "The crew through his balls to the sharks" "She knotty but nice" ..a great play on words since the word naughty comes from the word Knot..from the tree. Very good Gord! I think his some "Uncle Toad Said is his first song that is entirely a comedic song. Can you just imagine a peeping tom frog narking on the children for staying up late and drinking beer. Sounds like a Sat. Night Live Skit. I would have to go through all his lyrics. Seems he's got at least one funny line on each recording. I think he has more "catchy" lines than quote "funny" line. He really knows how to play on words very similar style to John Prine and Jimmy Buffett. Many double meanings in his lyrics. he drums up many scenes where I can visualize what is taking place. okay so some of these may not be ha ha funny, that isn't what Gord is about, thank God. maybe amusing is a better word. anyways all the above lyrics bring a smile to my face & it's all up to the individual in the long run. I just obtained a bunch of recordings from Gordy going way back. All the Warner Demos, Two Tones and even Gording singing in church at age 11. I think the funniest song now without a doubt is "Divorce Country Style" The lines are funny and the live aduience is rolling in spots with laughter.

Have to disagree about "Knotty but nice."
That's an old joke. I first heard it at age 5 (44 years ago) from a Disney album about Pinocchio. "Pinocchio, Pinocchio, His little head was made of solid Oak, we know. Pinocchio, Pinocchio, The rest of him must have been made of Knotty Pine." Since the movie "Pinocchio" was released in 1940, when Gord was just an infant, it would not be surprising if he were aware of that song, consciously or not. Final useless fact -- "Pinocchio" means "Pine eyes" in Italian. ------------------ "And the laughter came too easy for life to pass me by." |

For funny lines, I think the line about Betty's "engine" is pretty funny (the braggart! LOL):
Betty called me in to say goodnight, Much to my relief and pure delight. And with the dawn, the child in me was gone, But it made a man out of me that night. I think that was my big love scene I do believe her engine run all right. I also laugh at the lines from High & Dry: Now the pleasures of the harbor, Don't include a lady barber, If it wasn't for Long John Silver All of us pirates would have been martyrs. But my favorite (unsurprisingly) is from Too Much to Lose" "The dustcloud on the edge of town is me." ------------------ "And the laughter came too easy for life to pass me by." |

The reason I quoted my first quote, I read in a book about "origin" of words and they mention the word Knotty and naughty originating from the same source. So yes indeed it does. NM |
