I was pleasantly surprised to find such an active website about Gordon Lightfoot and I too felt like the only Lightfoot fan in the whole world until I came here. I am not nearly as knowledgeable as many of you, and I'm still learning quite a bit, but steadily getting up to speed... with some help from all you guys + gals! :D

Mike, welcome to the forum! Some threads I find interesting are:

"Do you think the song For Lovin Me is chauvinistic?"
http://www.corfid.com/ubb/ultimatebb...c;f=1;t=003955

or...

"When you think of GL - what year do you visualize?"
http://www.corfid.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ul...c;f=1;t=004093

Always interesting to hear different interpretations from an array of fans about Gordon and his music.

Have fun!

So a great big "thanks" to that person. :)

Isn't it weird how many of us did think, that we were the only Gordon Lightfoot fan in the world ?

The guy has toured all over the world, and he is a Millionaire many times over. And to actually think that I would be his only fan...

Gitchigumee, your signature tells it all...

Those 4 lines are pure genius. So simple, yet I dont think anyone else could have engraved that in my mind so perfectly.

There is a place that I drive by, close to Moncton. It's on the TCH, {Trans Canada Highway}, you look in the distance, there is lots of green dark forests,(mountains of it) and to top it all 2 railroad tracks, side by side, that seems to go forever in that forest.

Everytime I go by there, those 4 lines do come to mind. And many a times I will play CRT in the CD player. It's something that I can not describe in words, how proud it makes me feel to be a Canadian, like he is... Thank's so much to you ~Gordon Lightfoot~. :)

Jesse, I too believe those words are some of the most beautiful and eloquent ever written, hence their inclusion in my signature line. Like many things Lightfoot, those words have touched my soul.

More and more, I look with yearning to the north and I truly believe if I had to choose another country to call my home, it would be Canada. The more I learn about it, the more I am intrigued. Each experience I have had in your beautiful country has been wonderful. From fishing trips with my dad to motorcycle trips with my husband. I have found the scenery exceedingly beautiful and the people very friendly. And of course the Canadian people I have met and keep meeting on this forum ... what can I say, they're my kind of people. I look forward to spending much more time in your country in the future, and I actually have 2 possible trips coming up in 2008.

Being an American, I was always brought up to believe that I live in the greatest country on earth. I agree that it is great, but the older I get, the more I realize that the universe doesn't revolve around the good old US of A only. I am not always proud of what our country has done, and what it is doing. I am definitely not always proud of our leadership and can even understand why some of our "enemies" hate us so badly. It would have been unimaginable to think those thoughts growing up!

Jesse, you have every right to feel proud to be Canadian.

And I still find it incredible to recall that in my internet innocence way back in 1997, on the very first occasion that I
had the internet demonstrated to me by a friend in Yeovil Somerset England, to whom I had gone to for advice on buying a new
computer, and he was keento show off his new ISDN telephone line, whatever that was, and invited me to suggest a search using, I believe, the
search engine. Feeling somewhat foolish since I KNEW for a fact that I was the only Lightfot fan in the world and certain that my friend had never heard of him, and would marvel at my insanity,I said "sure please see if there is ANYTHING on the internet about Gordon Lightfoot".I was astonished to find a selection of sites and, shortly thereafter with a new computer incorporating a strange gubbins called a "modem",
I was able to do my own searches using probably Yahoo. At that time the prime source of GL info on the internet was the pioneer site set up as a demo site for his university class by Matthew Fifer, a site long since gone but happily archived by the wonderful Wayback Machine
One typical set of pages is at:-
Archived set from 2001
in the index on the left you will see two important links:-
1.the newsgroup
a link to a page describing alt.music.lightfoot and its then access using the usenet provider Dejanews
which was later taken over by http://remarq.com (the dejanews link now forwards you to google groups and I remember a BBC disc jockey in probably 1998 recommending a great new search engine with the odd name of google, who succeded dejanews and remarq as the custodian of the massive usenet/newsgroup archive.
Nowadays if you go and ogle for "Gordon Lightfoot" there are allegedly a staggering 1.2 million plus results!!
I devoured the Newsgroup, especially a fantastic series of FAQs that were updated monthly by an obviously besotted fan called Wayne Francis and in 1998/99 I found that Rik Stevens had started a chatroom on his own GL tribute site
see his 1998 announcement at:- http://rikchat.notlong.com/
I joined in and very rapidly found that I was by no means the only lightfoot fan around and the rest is history!!
2.FAQs.
This is a link to those FAQs which opens a page saying
"The FAQs are written and maintained by Wayne Francis." with a clickable list of sections. These were in fact the same set of FAQs found on dejanews/the newsgroup and used by permission on Matthew's site.In 1999 Wayne combined all his FAQ material and started his now well known "unofficial official" Lightfoot cornucopia at Lightfoot! All very interesting John. Whatever became of Matthew Fifer? I remember E.M.P. answering one of my letters, telling me about this Mr. Fifer, that had opened up a site, on the Internet, about our beloved Poet. I of course at that time did not own a computer, and tought how I was going to miss out a lot on GL...  :)

so there you are J-J now you know what a blessing in your life your computer is.
Regarding Matthew,I have corresponded with him by email within the last year he is now I believe living and working in Boston .He told me that his pioneering GL site was purely a temporary demonstration aid for the students he was teaching HTML/web authoring to at NWU to show what one could do on a web site so he naturally chose GL as the subject.
the site was hosted on his own webspace on the main NWU website,so when he left that employment the site was taken down

If you google long enough for "mfifer lightfoot" as I just did you will find sites that still list Matthew's old URL which was at:-
http://www.mmlc.nwu.edu/~mfifer/lightfoot/index.html
if you then copy and paste that into the "take me back" search box at httP://www.wayback.notlong.com
you will find that there are 24 sets of his website archived from 1998 through 2001
(not all are complete) including of course the one I linked to above
http://www.mfifer.notlong.com/
I saved many text details from his site back in 1997 and intend to try to recreate as much as possible to upload to my own web site as a tribute to Matthew, but of course I first have to clear the idea with him.

Just as every American should be proud of being American as well and never forget it. It appears you're not by your sentiments. I hope thats not so, but I kind of get that impression. While the current state of affairs is admittedly disheartening, I must respectfully disagree with you; perhaps it's not just the leader but the people who have become little more than armchair critics.

As many problems as we have, every other country has their own too. This is my country and no it's not perfect but I stand by it.

proud American

lol, well, i think it still does actually, understandably, a superpower at present...but it's great that we citizens of the western world have reduced our global ignorance and also attmept to make our leaders more accountable for wrong doings rather than our all following blindly waving our flags over our heads (sometimes the flapping of the flag obstructs our eyesight)...it's wonderful that we're also allowed to speak freely and make light of ourselves and our leaders and our errors as an outlet for venting frustration and just coping with the tension and uncertainlty of mankind altering desicions...lol, didnt' mean to get heavy...we were just talking about best threads and being proud of entertainers a second ago:)

ok, to get back into fun, here's sometihn light from Carlin that makes light of ourselves:

"when i heard that song "Don't Worry, Be Happy" i realized it was exactly the kind of mindless philosophy that Americans would respond to...it would make a great national motto...right along with "Me First" ...lol

imo, the eastern world has adopted that "me first" motto and it's expanding rapidly as our own ignorance diminishes...I imagine somewhere we'll all collide and there will be a big ugly war or hopefully and alternatively, just one big group hug:)

anyhow...Mike, just check out any threads that have lots of goofy pics...less reading required:)

I just refound this topic and thought some of the newcomers around might enjoy reading it and adding their thoughts.
Also an opportunity to repeat my appeal for anybody's favourite old threads
Thanks

Later a solitary response full of mindless drivel by an interloping ex-member calling himself "Barodino Bertie" has thankfully now been deleted. anybody else??

Mindless drivel ? Oh, I can offer plenty of that. I WAS wondering how the threads were becoming embedded with tripe.
